Redmption 218
Redmption 218
I turned to see Brandon grabbing my hand. He glanced at me with softness in his eyes before glaring at Chris. He said with determination, “I won’t leave here until the final inspection is complete.”
That was just the way he was. The more someone tried to push him out, the more determined he was to stay, just like before.
I was about to hear Chris‘ response when Brandon squeezed my hand a little tighter and added, “I promised Mae this.”
Hearing him calling me ‘Mae‘ and mentioning his promise to me sent a shiver through me.
It also darkened the expression on both Conrad’s and Chris‘ faces. Everyone fell silent and the tension thickened. It felt like the air had been sucked out of the room.
I took a deep breath and broke the silence. “Mr. Conrad, Mr. Chris, even though I’m no longer in charge of this project or employed here, there’s one rule I’ve always remembered. The company’s interests always come first and no one has the right to jeopardize them for any reason.”
I reminded Conrad that he needed to take responsibility for his own actions. If he wanted to protect someone else, then he should be ready to bear the consequences. In ancient times, even the nobles were held accountable for their crimes just like commoners.
If they wanted to run a company effectively, they had to lead by example.
Having laid it out like this, Chris and Conrad had nothing more to say. To them, even if I was being logical, I was taking Brandon’s side. They both looked furious, but it seemed like the matter had finally come to an end.
Just then, Jewel came to take the blame. She hurried over while completely ignoring her condition. “I was in charge of this. I should be the one to bear the consequences.”
Chris‘ expression grew even darker. The veins in his temples were pulsing with anger. This was a clear sign that he was about to lose his temper. I could sense that he was on the verge of beating someone up.
If it were other employees, they were really asking for it. However, this was Jewel, the woman Chris had chosen over a decade of our relationship and even family ties.
I could almost predict what Chris was going to say. I smirked and was going to leave with Brandon. I was tired of hearing some excuses and even more tired of seeing him defend Jewel.
However, to my surprise, Chris turned to Jewel and said, “If it’s your responsibility, then you’ll bear the consequences. The losses will be on you.”
I looked at Chris in disbelief. His expression was stern as he turned away.
Jewel stood there, her charming little face palling in shock. This was not what I expected. I never thought Chris would actually punish the woman he loved so much.
As Chris walked away, Jewel’s expression slowly recovered. She awkwardly looked at Conrad, hoping to get back her dignity, “Conrad, I’ll arrange to have the financial department cover the losses.”
“Alright,” Conrad replied curtly before adding, “You may address me as Mr. Gildon during work hours.”
Jewel’s face was clear that she felt extremely humiliated by the two brothers. She didn’t even look at me,
not that I wanted to witness her embarrassment. What was there to see anyway?
She had already humiliated me by taking away my fiance.
“Let’s go,” I said to Brandon.
He nodded and held my hand as we walked away. His grip on my hand didn’t loosen throughout.
After a distance, I looked at his hand which was still holding mine. “There’s no one around here.” Contentt bel0ngs to N0ve/lDrâ/ma.O(r)g!
“I wasn’t trying to put on a show.” It seemed like he understood my point.
His words were a subtle tease about how I hugged him earlier on, implying that he thought that was a performance for Chris.
“Well, if it’s not for show, then you really shouldn’t be holding my hand.” I pulled back my hand and jokingly added, “Do you always casually hold other girls‘ hands, Mr. Howell?”
“No. I’ve only held yours.” He was honest as always, but I found it sweet at the same time.
