Chapter 346
Chapter 346
Ronan couldn't help but feel a pang of sympathy at the sight of Cordelia's shaky, feeble legs, but he
knew she had to take the first steps into motherhood. If not, she would drift further and further away
from her baby. Without the child as a tether, she could leave the country at any time. Têxt belongs to NôvelDrama.Org.
Cordelia entered Paloma's room. Paloma was a highly trained maternity nurse with top-notch
professionalism; she was the kind who didn't cut corners.
Callum was sharing a bed with Paloma.
"Is the baby crying?" Cordelia asked.
"Yes, ma'am. He just woke up and started crying," Paloma replied.
Cordelia sat by the bed, clapped her hands, and said to Callum, "Come, Mommy will hold you."
Unexpectedly, little Callum cried harder, reaching out for Paloma's embrace instead.
A smile froze on Cordelia's face, and her hands were still hanging in mid-air.
Could this be the intuitive bond between mother and child? She had initially disliked this baby, and the
baby seemed to know it.
She was now trying to change her mindset. After all, this child was her flesh and blood. She couldn't
vent her anger on him because of another child she had never met. During the holiday season, her
mood had been terrible, and the child's development was not good, largely due to her.
These days, she was trying to move out of her depressive state,
yet Callum kept pushing her away.
The seeds she had sown had now borne fruit.
Seeing Cordelia sitting there in a daze, Paloma tried to comfort her, "Ma'am, don't overthink it. The
baby will always be closer to his mother. He's just woken up and is looking for the closest embrace. He
can't recognize people yet."
Cordelia only hummed in response, feeling lost.
She stayed in Paloma's room for a while longer, waiting until the baby fell asleep before leaving.
When Cordelia got to the living room, the doorbell rang.
Who could be visiting at this hour? She wondered.
Picking up the intercom, she saw a figure on the other end, along with a familiar voice. "Cordelia, it's
Mom."
Cordelia's body started to shudder, and her hands were trembling.
It was Amanda at the door.
Cordelia had thought that the dark cloud of her mother's death had long passed, and the scars in her
heart were healing until Amanda appeared. Cordelia's most instinctive reaction betrayed her inner
feelings.
Deep down, she had always been resentful that her mother's murderer had never been caught. The
grudge was buried deep in her heart, never dissipating.
Cordelia remotely opened the gate and the front door.
Soon, Amanda and Olen appeared before Cordelia.
Cordelia's legs were shaking uncontrollably.
"Mom..." Cordelia called out to Amanda, but the word "Dad" seemed stuck in her throat, refusing to
come out.
Olen kept his head down, not daring to meet Cordelia's gaze.
Cordelia clenched her teeth tightly.
Ronan had never mentioned the circumstances of her mother's death, but she had already guessed
the gist of it. Olen had mistaken Cordelia’s mother for Shayla and had pushed her downstairs. It was
unlikely that Ronan was the culprit, as he held no grudge against Cordelia’s mother. Besides,
Cordelia’s father had donated his corneas to Ronan, and Ronan had tried to repay Cordelia’s mother,
who had eventually refused his offer. Therefore, the most probable suspect was her father-in-law, Olen.
Seeing Olen's guilty demeanor, Cordelia was even more certain of her suspicions.
"Mom, what brings you here?" Cordelia managed to ask, despite her trembling body.
"You had a baby and didn't tell us?" Amanda lovingly brushed Cordelia's hair behind her ear.
"Did... did Ronan tell you?" Cordelia's palm tightened into a fist.
"Oh, no." Amanda shook her head. "It wasn't him. We heard it from Emerson's parents. They're abroad
and mentioned it casually. He even asked us why we didn't come back to visit. We're..."
Amanda's voice broke, and she began to cry softly. "We're grandparents now. Cordelia, this is a
maternity gift from us. The password is six zeros. We didn't save much while we were abroad. Besides,
as a mother-in-law, I should be taking care of you now that you have a baby."
Amanda took Cordelia's hand into hers.
