Chapter 660 Crossing The Threshold
After the two distinguished ladies left, Lily immediately made a call to the person she had made arrangements with.
Kendrick sped all the way home, carrying a beautifully wrapped gift in his hand.
That day was his mother's birthday. It was rare for him, who usually enjoyed gallivanting outside, to go home that early.
He wanted to surprise his mother for her birthday, so he didn't let her know in advance that he was coming home.
Recently, his mother had relentlessly pressured him to marry Rachel, causing a rift between them and straining their emotional bond. Hence, he didn't want to go home at all. But due to the special occasion, he had no choice but to do so regardless of how unwilling he was simply because he was her only son.
Upon learning that his mother was at the Berry family's mansion, Kendrick hurried over without a moment's delay.
The Berry family's residence was an old building with classical architecture. The entrance would lead into a garden-like passage. Upon opening the glass door, one would lead directly to the open-air backyard. The building was part of the dowry given to Lily by the Berry family back in the day. Every month, Lily would stay there for a few days.
After Kendrick ascended the stairs and noticed the empty living room couch, he proceeded to the
second floor.
The door was slightly ajar, and through the gap, the familiar voice of his mother could be heard. She seemed to be speaking on the phone.
Kendrick, holding the gift, was about to push the door open when he stopped abruptly upon hearing the contents of her conversation.
“Yes. As long as you do as I say, I will guarantee your safety. Once the job is done, you can take the ten million to change your identity and disappear. You won't have to be a nurse with no future anymore. You should know, with your current qualifications and meager salary, you will never earn this much money in your entire life! What are you hesitating for now? If it wasn't for the fact that this is urgent and I trust you, I would have found someone else. I believe few people can resist the temptation of ten million. It's not like you're the only one capable of carrying out this task!”
Although Kendrick usually appeared nonchalant, he had a sharp mind that he didn't show it often. Upon hearing the conversation, he immediately knew that his mother was plotting something.
He held his breath, continuing to eavesdrop from the corner. He wanted to figure out what exactly his mother was planning to do.
Sensing the hesitation at the other end of the line, Lily continued to patiently coax, “All I'm asking is for you to inject that woman with a drug that will disrupt her labor. I'm not asking you to murder her. What are you afraid of? Besides, an unborn baby can hardly be considered a person, so how can it be considered murder? Think about the miserable life you're leading now and compare it to the carefree days you'll enjoy once you get ten million. Anyone who isn't a fool would know how to choose.”
Thereafter, Lily's tone suddenly changed, and her expression became somewhat gloomy. “Moreover, even if you don't want to do it, there's no way out for you. I've already transferred a third of the reward into your account as a deposit. If you don't follow my instructions, I'll accuse you of fraud! When you can't explain the source of such a large sum of money, prison is the only thing that awaits you!”
At the other end of the line, the woman hesitated for a while before finally making up her mind. “Alright, I'll cooperate with you this one time. I hope you'll keep your promise afterward and help me leave the country. If anything happens to me, I'll certainly implicate you as well. Now, tell me, what kind of outcome do you want?”
Lily replied through her gritted teeth, “I want that despicable child in Avery's belly to die in the womb!”
Upon hearing that, Kendrick could feel the tension within him suddenly explode.
So, it turns out Mom is targeting Avery? She wants to harm her child while Cayden is away?
Unable to hold back any longer, Kendrick forcefully pushed the door open.
Seeing her son storm in angrily, Lily, who had just hung up the phone, turn pale. She guiltily avoided his probing gaze, wondering how much of her phone conversation her son had overheard.
Feeling awkward, she attempted to hold her son's hand, pretending to be a loving mother. “Kendrick, when did you come in? Why didn't you let me know in advance?”
Kendrick forcefully pushed her away, his face ashen as he demanded, “Mom, is Avery about to give birth? Are you planning to harm her child? Why would you do such a thing? That's a precious little life!
How could you even consider it?”
Lily naturally defended herself vehemently, “Son, you must have misunderstood. How could I possibly do such a crazy thing? I...”
“I heard everything!” Kendrick looked at Lily as if he didn't recognize her. His eyes filled with indescribable disappointment. “How did the kind-hearted mother I know become so cruel? Not only did you almost kill Cayden in the past, but you're also targeting his child now that he's gone. How could you be so heartless? You've truly let me down!”
Lily's trembling finger pointed accusingly at Kendrick, her voice filled with heartache. “How can you speak to your mother like this? Everything I've done, isn't it all for you? If it weren't for you, I wouldn't have ended up like this. You actually dare to accuse your own mother of being malicious?”
Kendrick didn't want to see his mother playing the victim anymore. He tossed the gift he had brought for her onto the table. “If Avery is fine, then it's all good. But if something happens to her, I will never forgive you!”
After he finished speaking, he gave his mother a cold glance, then quickly turned around and left. Lily wanted to stop him but failed to do so.
A sense of foreboding welled up in her heart as she asked in a high-pitched voice, “Kendrick, where are you going?”
The only response she received was silence.
With her eyes wide open, Lily could only watch as her son drove off in his sports car, leaving her in its
dust.
She stomped her foot, nearly fainting from frustration with her good-for-nothing son. She had no choice but to make that call again. “Yes. You must act quickly. Regardless of whether the child is a boy or a girl, you must ensure that the baby does not survive...”
Inside the operating room of the hospital, the incandescent light that shone into Avery's eyes was so jarring that it nearly brought her to tears.
Even though it was her second child, the baby's delivery was somewhat difficult due to her small pelvis.
“Mrs. Moore, hang in there and take a deep breath. I believe in you. You can do this!” the attending physician encouraged Avery patiently.
In the throes of intense pain, Avery seemed to see Cayden coming toward her and giving her an embrace.
As usual, he lovingly ran his fingers through her hair, flashing a warm smile. “Honey, keep going. You're doing great. I believe in you, you can definitely give birth to the fruit of our love.”
The tears that welled up in the corners of her eyes finally began to fall.
Avery, who had exhausted nearly all of her strength, suddenly felt her strength return.
Even though she had concentrated all her strength in her lower torso, intending to give birth to the baby in a single push, her poor constitution prevented her from doing so, as she was still experiencing weak contractions.
Given that her water had already broken and the urgency to prevent intrauterine infection, the attending physician had no choice but to order the nurse, “Administer the parturition-hastening injection to the lady immediately!”
Everyone was oblivious to the fact that one of the nurses, wearing a mask, had quietly pulled out a syringe filled halfway with a dark yellow liquid. A strange smile curled up beneath her mask as she was about to inject the substance into Avery's body.
