Chapter 883
Chapter 883
Brittany was stumped. She had scrutinized the list of people, only to find that a mere handful had
emerged alive from the research institute.
Joie was one of the few.
Brittany reached out to Charles. “How did Joie survive the institute?”
“Word is, she had tight connections with the institute’s higher-ups,” Charles’s findings were limited as
well. “Rumor has it, her talents were recognized by the top brass, which is why she was allowed to NôvelDrama.Org owns this.
leave.”
“If she was really so capable, how could she have died so easily?”
How did she survive the hellish institute only to perish in Imperial City?
“She had a toxin in her system,” Charles said gravely. “Anyone who leaves the institute is poisoned. It
doesn’t affect daily life, but once they stop taking the antidote, the pain is unbearable.”
Brittany felt a chill down her spine. “No wonder.”
With her mission failed, the institute would no longer supply Joie with the antidote.
Without it, her life was agony.
“What about Isaac?”
“According to the investigation, it was the Salter family who specified the list that year.” Charles was
baffled too. “Isaac was planted in there at the behest of the Salter family.”
The thought of the kindly, benevolent Grace sent an unbidden shiver through Brittany. “I understand
now.”
After ending the call, Brittany deleted all traces of her emails, refusing to leave any evidence behind.
She stayed in her office for over three hours, unable to make heads or tails of it.
Why would the Salter family put Isaac in jeopardy?
Entering the institute meant his life was effectively over!
She painstakingly revisited every detail from over two decades ago and suddenly recalled an incident!
Their escape had been a narrow one, and they had nearly been recaptured. But the pursuing group
suddenly received a phone call causing them to abruptly cease their pursuit.
If that call had been orchestrated by the Salter family…
Did that mean their every move was under the watchful eye of the Salters?
Joie, nominally, had once saved Isaac.
Now she was dead.
Would she be next? The real savior of Isaac?
If so, were her current actions also being monitored by the Salter family?
The more Brittany pondered, the more frightened she became, feeling a momentary panic. Come ten
o’clock, Brittany shook off the confusion, packed up, and left the studio.
Walking through the parking lot in a daze, she barely mustered the energy to drive home.
Halfway there, Brittany received a message from Isaac, informing her of a social engagement that
might keep him out late.
She longed to see Isaac, to confirm that all this wasn’t just a fleeting dream.
However, as she was about to call him, a sudden hesitation gripped her.
She couldn’t risk alerting anyone that she was the young girl from all those years ago!
Not until it was safe.
Brittany had to suppress her emotions and replied to the message.
[Don’t drink too much. Remember to come home early.]
She turned off her phone and drove home.
Upon arrival, she found Daniel sitting on the carpet, surrounded by his blocks. His tiny hands were
propping up his chin, tapping rhythmically.
Seeing her son’s docile figure melted Brittany’s heart.
She closed the door, slipped into her house shoes, and knelt beside him. “Daniel, why aren’t you ”
Daniel sleepily hugged her. “Mommy, I wanted to wait for you.”
He sniffed the familiar scent of Brittany, becoming slightly more alert. “Today, Ms. Hana got
transferred.”
“Transferred where?”
“To another class.”
Daniel pouted; he obviously liked Ms. Hana. “She’s a good teacher. I really liked her.”
“Maybe it’s the school’s decision,” Brittany soothed him. “You have to learn to accept it. And since Ms.
Hana is still at the same school you might see her again if you’re lucky.”
Daniel nodded solemnly.
After getting Daniel to bed, Brittany was about to retire to her room when she heard Isaac return.
“You’re back.”
