Chapter 322

“He wasn’t disturbing me at all,” said Serenity. “Besides, your son is really cute. I think he wants to try the noodles because he’s been staring at the bowl the whole time.”

“He might not eat it even if you offered it to him,” said the woman. “This boy just likes to join in on the fun.”

As the woman spoke, Serenity noticed that she was making hand gestures in front of the boy. She was taken aback for a moment when she realized that those gestures were sign language!

“Is this boy..” Serenity blurted out.

“He can’t hear,” the woman replied. “But he knows a little sign language now, so if I tell him something in sign language, able to understand me.”

Then, the woman slowly said the words “Apologize to Auntie while simultaneously using sign language to say the same thing

Following that, the boy turned to Serenity and bowed to her, signifying that he was saying sorry to her.

Serenity could not help but raffle the boy’s hair affectionately. The boy was so young, yet he could not hear at all? Did that mean that all the sounds and voices in the world did not exist at all as far as he was concerned?

The woman picked the boy up and carried him away. Serenity went back to her food, but her heart was inexplicably heavy.

When she finished her noodles and was about to leave the restaurant, she caught a glimpse of a vacancy notice posted at the entrance. It stated that they were looking for someone to do the deliveries

Serenity quickly turned to the woman behind the cash register and asked her, “Are you looking for a rider to do the deliveries?

“Yes,” she nodded.

“Then… Can I apply for the job?”

The restaurant owner stared at Serenity, looking a little puzzled.

“You want to apply for the rider’s job?” she asked.

“Is there a problem?”

“No,” the woman replied, “I just thought that a young woman like you wouldn’t normally apply for a laborious job like this.” “Any job is precious to me,” Serenity paused, then truthfully told the woman, “I’ve been in prison before. I have a criminal record. I was involved in a car crash that killed someone, so it’s been really hard for me to find a job. To tell you the truth, desperately need this job.”

The woman’s eyes trembled a little when Serenity mentioned that she used to be in prison, almost as if she was taken by surprise.

“This job comes with a fixed salary,” the woman said. “When it gets really busy, you’ll be in charge of both the deliveries and you’ll also have to help out in the restaurant. You’ll be paid 500 dollars a month. Are you okay with these terms? Oh, and you’ll be provided with two free meals per day–lunch and dinner. Your work will start at half past nine in the morning, and you’ll get off work at nine in the evening, so the working hours are a little longer.”

500 dollars was almost twice what Serenity earned at the Sanitation Office. As for the backbreaking work, well, it was nothing when one’s survival was on the line.

“Okay!” Serenity replied enthusiastically. “I accept the terms!”

The woman scrutinized Serenity for an instant then smiled.

“In that case, you may start working tomorrow. We have the scooter for the deliveries, so you don’t need to buy one if you don’t already have one. Just use the one we have.”

“Thank you!” cried Serenity earnestly. “I’ll make sure to show up on time tomorrow!”

Never would she expect that she would end up finding a job so soon and so unexpectedly too!
