Chapter 1412
At first, there was a flutter of excitement that soon turned into hesitation. However, now, Ted found himself irresistibly drawn to Janine, unable to fight the urge to get closer.
He thought that rather than overthinking everything and letting his emotions run wild, he should take a more proactive approach.
Janine didn't notice Ted's gaze as she grabbed a pair of slippers and said, "Please sit and wait for a moment. I'll go serve dinner." Thankfully, she had made extra food, planning to save some for a quick stir-fry in the morning.
The dishes she prepared were quite simple—shrimp with zucchini and garlic-sauteed greens.
"I usually cook something quick when I get home from work, so don't mind me," Janine said, treating Ted like a younger brother.
He felt a bit shy about the simplicity of the meal.
She then pulled out two bottles of drinks from the fridge. Normally, she didn't drink much soda, but she kept some at home for kids, who liked it when they visited during the hot weather.
Looking at the two simple dishes before him, Ted felt that they were visually appealing and fragrant. It had been years since he had tasted home- cooked meals like these.
After taking a bite, his eyes lit up. "Janine, your cooking is excellent!"
He had eaten dishes from various chefs at fine restaurants, but it was rare for anything to make him want to go back for seconds.
Suddenly, he found himself wanting more than just one serving.
Although Janine's children often praised her cooking, hearing such compliments from someone less familiar brought her unexpected joy. She smiled and said, "It's just home-cooked meals."
"Home cooking really tests a person's culinary skills. If done well, it has that comforting taste of home. If not, it can be quite unappetizing.
"I sometimes cook for myself, but every time it turns out inedible. Most of it ends up in the trash, so I've given up on cooking and mostly eat out or order takeout," Ted said.
Janine was somewhat surprised. "What about your wife?"
"My wife passed away from cancer 15 years ago," Ted replied calmly. After all, it had been a long time since that moment.
Ted and his wife had been college sweethearts, and it was only natural that they got married. However, just six months after their wedding,. during a routine pregnancy checkup,
they discovered that she had
late-stage breast cancer.
It wasn't long after the diagnosis that she passed away.
At that time, he was struggling financially. Both sets of parents tried their best to support them, but it still wasn't enough to save her.
In the years since her death, he had
focused intensely on his career. Although many women had shown interest in him, and his family had
tried to set him up on blind dates, he never felt inclined to pursue any of them.

He thought living alone wasn't so bad, and gradually, his parents stopped pressuring him.
Many people didn't fully understand his situation. They assumed he was still married and had a family.
Some young women even approached him, suggesting they could be his mistress, openly offering money for his support. Ted had a strong aversion to such opportunistic advances.
Janine was taken aback by his story and quickly apologized. Ted smiled and reassured her. "It's nothing."
Janine nodded, finding her impression of Ted improving. Over the 15 years since his wife's passing, he had remained deeply loyal and had never sought another relationship.
It was clear that his emotional life was straightforward, as she hadn't heard anyone mention any romantic history involving him.
It seemed clear that he had truly loved his wife.novelbin
Suddenly, she reflected on her own life.

Moreover, she believed that finding another partner might bring unnecessary complications for the kids and involve a lot of uncertainties, so she continued to live this way.
With her children's companionship, she didn't feel lonely.
However, the fact that Ted had spent so many years alone made her see him in a new light, and she couldn't help but admire his resilience.
