Chapter 123

Bree’s words took me by surprise.

Bree’s eyes were once again brimmed with tears. She shook her head and said, “Why did it have to end like this?

“If you can’t be my daughter–in–law, that’s one thing, but now, you won’t even stay with the company. Maddie, are you planning to leave us completely?”

Her distress weighed heavily on me. After all, we had developed a bond over the past decade that couldn’t be easily dismissed.

“Bree, I promise I’ll visit you and Zack often,” I reassured her.

I couldn’t help but laugh at her assumption. Brandon and I were just friends, yet everyone seemed to think otherwise.

“Bree, I’m not currently dating anyone. And even if I were, he doesn’t have the right to dictate my life. You’re overthinking it,” I clarified.

Bree fell silent for a moment.

Thinking we’d covered everything, I was about to end the conversation when she continued, “Maddie, there’s something I want to say, but I fear it might upset you.”

“Bree, perhaps it’s best left unsaid,” I interjected.
