Chapter 27:

Scarlett’s Fight Scarlett already expected Kaleb to draw attention to her, make Courtney jealous, make her mother contemplate their past decisions about abandoning her and make Luca finally realize that she was over him.

What she absolutely did not predict was to be engrossed with an open–mouth kiss right in front of them.

Still, she enjoyed it. Who would not? Kaleb was a very good kisser. He was always eager and passionate with his kisses. He made her feel as though she was the only girl he had ever kissed in his entire life!

“Mmm.” She moaned into Kaleb‘s mouth and ultimately, she pulled away from the heated kiss, her lips easily became numbed. “Scarlett? How was the will reading?” Kaleb purposely asked. He grabbed her hand and turned to face Courtney, Cindy, and Luca. “I hope my girlfriend had a fair share of the properties of the Barnes.”

Kaleb turned to Cindy and emphasized, “After all, she is your biological daughter.”

Silence stretched between both parties. Cindy paled at what she had just witnessed whereas, Courtney’s eyes became filled with rage. Jealousy crept into her heart that her jaws evidently clenched.

Luca, on the other hand, stiffened. His eyes rounded in shock. “Mister Wright, is this real? You are... you are with Scarlett?” Cindy stumbled on her probing, her finger pointing at Scarlett, all while her forehead knitted. “Yes, Scarlett is my girlfriend,” Kaleb confirmed. “And if not for her dreams of becoming a lawyer, I would have compelled her to marry me outright.” All eyes were widening at that point. Even Scarlett was startled at his suggestion. “But – but why?” Cindy protested. “She is my ungrateful child who only brought chaos to my house? “How exactly?” Kaleb countered. “Wasn‘t it Courtney who coveted Scarlett‘s fiance?”

Kaleb’s words rendered Cindy speechless. Her eyes wandered back and forth between Courtney and Luca. Eventually, she answered, “You don‘t understand –” “You are right. I don‘t understand. No woman in her right mind would go about stealing her sister’s fiance,” Kaleb suggested. “But then again, Luca‘s loss is a gain for me.” Kaleb extended his hand to Luca and said, “Luca, thank you for letting Scarlett go.”

Kaleb then turned to Courtney, saying, “Ma‘am, I respect the elders, you see.” Courtney, “...” Addressing Courtney, Kaleb resumed, “Ma‘am, if not for you, taking Luca for yourself, I would still be seeing the love of my life in another man’s arms. So thank you.”

Meanwhile, Luca, who was still in disbelief at everything, finally came to his senses. He said,“ K – Kaleb -”

“Mister Wright to you,” Kaleb reminded. “Do not forget your place, Luca James.”

“Kaleb?” Scarlett tugged Kaleb’s sleeve and said, “Let’s go. Let’s talk about my father’s will at home.”

“No, I want to know the details.” Kaleb insisted. “As your future husband, I want to make sure that my future wife is given a fair share of her inheritance –” “She does not have the right!” Cindy interrupted. “And you do not understand our decisions. Scarlett tried to destroy Courtney‘s life! It was only fair that she is stripped of her inheritance completely, but we did not. We even left her five million dollars!” “Five million dollars for your own flesh and blood?” Kaleb said, his towering frame walking closer to Cindy. It was when Kaleb came forward with a threatening glare that Luca spoke again. He reminded, “Any parent can choose to disinherit his or her child. It is not against the law.” “Come on, Luca. Not when Braeton City has a forced heirship law.” This time, Scarlett spoke.“ You can’t mix up the laws in every state.”

“Are you going to make this difficult? You still have an inheritance. We are technically not going against the law. Just be happy about it!” Luca reported, his voice raised and his finger pointed at Scarlett.

“That may be so,” Scarlett acknowledged, coming out of hiding from Kaleb‘s body. “But it is unjust! Plus, considering how father has been ill lately, I can contest the will under the grounds of undue influence, which I might add, Courtney had been brainwashing my parents for a very, very long time –”. “There is no influence going on here, Scarlett!” Cindy retorted, her voice also strengthening. “Oh, mother, can’t you see it? She has convinced father to leave you with a lesser inheritance, to give Analisa a fifty million dollar gift? She is putting ideas into father‘s head!” Scarlett spelled out.

Then, with the recollection of Philip‘s condition, Scarlett snapped at Courtney. She said, “The best way to prove that father made this will without undue influence is when he is back to health!”

“Should father die, in his ill state, will surely give me a better fighting chance of contesting the will! So for your sake, Courtney, you better wish that father gets better miraculously. Only then, when he is in a better state, and have a decent talk with me about my inheritance, will I truly accept my pitiful five million dollars!” “Otherwise, I will fight for my right, not because I want a war, but because I had been robbed for a very long time! I was born a Barnes, yet till this very day, I never felt like one!” “Nonetheless, Scarlett,” Kaleb reached for her hand, sensing how his kitten was already fired up in anger. He pulled her in his arms and said, “Five million dollars is just insignificant for me. I can offer you more.”

Turning to Cindy, Courtney, and Luca, Kaleb hinted, “Scarlett can choose to go after her rightful inheritance or not. Either way, she ends up being a billionaire after our marriage.” Shifting his gaze to Cindy, Kaleb warned, “Have a decent talk with your husband, or else, you and your daughter will lose all that stupid inheritance, just fighting my team of experienced lawyers in a legal battle that I can afford to make it last for many years.”

“Luca? We both know how this game works.” Kaleb winked at him. “You played this game before by suppressing Scarlett‘s opportunities, just because you had the upper hand. Now that Scarlett is with me, be very careful… because once you make a move against her, I will be your enemy, and mind you… you can’t afford to have a Wright as your enemy.”

After his warning, Kaleb’s temperament changed. He smiled while turning to Scarlett. “Now, if you will excuse us. We best be going home. We will see you again once the will has been revised.”

That night, after putting Liam to sleep. Scarlett gawked at the city view from the penthouse’s balcony. She reflected on what had transpired that afternoon. Her heart could not help but still ache, especially by the decisions of her parents. While she already expected it, she just could not accept her fate. She hated the fact that Philip and Cindy were falling into Courtney’s schemes and they were so blind to have not noticed it. “Kitten? Are you still upset about earlier?” Kaleb came over, embracing her from the side. With a nod, Scarlett admitted, “I can‘t help it. They are still my parents. It still hurts.” Kaleb pecked on Scarlett‘s forehead and asked, “What about with Luca? Does it still hurt to see him?“.

“No. Definitely not. If anything, I am mocking him for falling into Courtney‘s trap. I hope he marries her soon,” Scarlett suggested. “I hope so too,” Kaleb answered. “Don‘t worry about your father‘s will. I‘m sure they will change their minds – » “You know it‘s not about that, Kaleb. And I could live with five million dollars. That is more than enough for a simple person like me. After all, I was raised in hardship for sixteen years,” Scarlett suggested. “It‘s the fact that everything has been so unfair that makes me want to fight back.”

“I know.” Kaleb embraced her with both arms. His mouth pecked on her head. He said, “And with every decision you make, I will support you.” For minutes, Scarlett remained in Kaleb‘s hold. She merely relished the feel of his warm embrace. After clearing her head, she remarked, “You were really savage earlier. Where did you learn that?”

“It sort of... runs in the family,” Kaleb said with a smirk. “We are only savage to those who intentionally hurt us, though. Deep down, the men of the Wrights are tender and… constantly horny.” “What?” Scarlett smacked his arm, saying, “How is horny a clear description of the Wright men?”

“Hey, we are four siblings. My dad was busy,” Kaleb suggested with a smirk. “Do you know how many children my older brother has? Four. Yeah, he was busy too!”

“And I‘m telling you now, we are going to be super busy –” Scarlett was already laughing at his suggestion, her face burning. Just when she thought the man was only playing jokes, she heard Kaleb say, “Do... you remember the conditions I set... should I show up at your parent‘s house?”

‘Oh, my god! What were those conditions again?‘‘ She dug through her brain. When she finally recalled, her face turned a shade darker.

“Do you... remember now?” Kaleb asked while forcing her to look at her.

Scarlett shook her head, completely in denial. Then she heard Kaleb fill in the conditions for her. He stressed, “I said... if I show up at your parent‘s house, your mouth is going to get screwed.” She gulped.
