His Beloved Ex-Wife

Chapter 453 Something Is Off

Daphne stepped in and said, “Dr. Thorne is a reputable doctor highly regarded by pregnant women. I think she was even featured in a medical journal before.”

A smile played at the corners of Whitney’s lips.

She knew what Daphne had in mind but decided to play along. “I know. What she has accomplished at this age is just a glimpse of what can be achieved in the future.”

Business courtesies usually began with mutual compliments, but Lysander seemed unaware of it.

Thankfully, Daphne was quite eloquent in showering Whitney with praises.

Nevertheless, Whitney, knowing the purpose of her visit, remained indifferent to her compliments. When Daphne spoke, Whitney merely lowered her head and offered a faint smile. It was difficult to tell if she was paying attention to what Daphne said.

“There have been quite a few folks who were really struggling to have a baby. But once they went to Dr. Thorne, things started looking up for them. Some even got their wishes fulfilled in the end.” When Daphne made this remark, a slight shift in Whitney’s expression was noticeable.

Noticing the change in Whitney’s expression, Daphne knew she had to seize the opportunity. “Ms. Spears, since you’re already here, why not make the most of this trip? It’s an option worth exploring, after all. Giving it a try won’t cause any harm. What do you think?” Lysander suggested, her tone encouraging.

Whitney’s eyes flickered. “You’ve done your homework on me, haven’t you, Ms. Everhart?”

“Oh, no, please don’t take it the wrong way. Besides, I’m not capable of that either. Ms. Spears, since the banquet hasn’t begun yet, perhaps we could have a private chat?” Daphne asked.

Given t

the extremely personal nature of the topic, it was best not to discuss it in front of others.

After sizing them up for a while and assessing the situation, Whitney nodded. “All right. Let’s head over there.”

Daphne and Lysander exchanged glances before joining Whitney in a quiet corner of the hall where they could converse without worrying about being disturbed or overheard by others.

Whitney continued scrutinizing Lysander with a thoroughness that suggested she doubted the latter’s expertise due to her age or perhaps harbored some other concern.

Throughout their conversation, Lysander maintained her composure and carried herself with confidence, unfazed by Whitney’s scrutiny.

“Dr. Thorne, your name seems familiar to me. It feels like we’ve met before,” Whitney said.

Lysander responded, “I worked in the obstetrics and gynecology department at the Central Hospital for quite some time. You may have seen me if you’ve had a check–up there.”

Whitney paused, considering for a moment. “I have visited Central Hospital a few times, but I believe I met you elsewhere, Dr. Thorne. I wonder if you have any connection with Mr. Guerra of the Guerra Group?”

Whitney flashed a casual smile. “Of course, I’d understand you might not want to address it if it’s too personal, and I don’t mean to pry into your privacy. I recall our company once held a year–end party at a resort under the Guerra Group. It was nestled in the mountains, surrounded by a stunning lush valley. I wonder if you’ve had the chance to visit that location before, Dr. Thorne?”

The smile on Lysander’s face gradually faded away.

She had indeed visited the resort three times.

During her initial visit, she experienced a fallout with Josiah. Subsequently, after leaving the resort, she underwent an abortion.

On her second trip, she accompanied the ambulance dispatched to aid Susan, who had suffered from high blood pressure after being harassed by Lysanne.

As for her third journey to the resort, it occurred not too long ago.

It was Josiah who accompanied her there.

Lysander couldn’t help but wonder which particular occasion Whitney was re

referring to.

Instead of beating around the bush, Whitney gave her a direct answer. “It was late that day when Mr. Guerra drove you to the resort. You walked ahead of him, and he even pressed the elevator button for

you,

Lysander instantly knew she was referring to her third trip there.

Whitney narrowed her eyes and chuckled gently. “Observing how tirelessly Mr. Guerra tries to please you made me wonder if he’s gearing up for a wedding soon. It appears the wedding is on the horizon, yer his significant other doesn’t seem to match the person I had in mind.”

Sensing that Whitney had recognized her, Lysander felt there was no need to feign ignorance any longer. “I’m here today as Daphne’s friend. It has nothing to do with Josiah.”

Whitney, however, remarked, “I would have walked away carlier instead of standing here chatting with you if you were merely Ms. Everhart’s friend.”

“I don’t enjoy prying into others‘ relationships, and I completely understand Ms. Everhart’s intentions. However, Dr. Thorne, please clarify your current relationship with Mr. Guerra. This information will influence my decision regarding investing in Everhart Corporation.”

“There’s nothing between us,” Lysander replied.

“Well, if that’s the case,” Whitney said, “Ms. Everhart, I’m afraid I can’t help you anymore. You’ll have to find another solution.” Exclusive content © by Nô(v)el/Dr/ama.Org.

Just as Whitney was about to turn around and leave, Daphne, overwhelmed by anxiety, rushed forward to stop her. “Ms. Spears, let’s talk about this first, shall we? Are you sure you don’t want Dr. Thorne to conduct a checkup for you? She truly is an exceptional obstetrician and gynecologist.”

Whitney had clearly accepted her fate. “I’ve been to major hospitals for check–ups and have tried plenty of traditional folk remedies, but nothing has worked. Besides, I’ve reached this age, and my desire for children has significantly faded. I’m not insisting on it anymore. Thank you, Ms. Everhart, but I don’t want to trouble you further.”

“How will we know if we don’t give it a shot? What if it’s possible?” Daphne refused to give in..

Whitney glanced up, her gaze meeting Daphine’s. She knitted her brows, pausing for a moment to ponder.

A few seconds later, she shifted her gaze to Lysander, though it was apparent she still harbored.

reservations.

Daphne immediately clarified, “Ms. Spears, please don’t think of this as emotional blackmail. I’m just taking advantage of this chance to chat with you. And don’t worry, whether the treatment works out or not, I won’t push you on the investment.”

Despite Daphne’s reassurance. Whitney, drawing on her extensive decade–long experience in the business world, understood the underlying dynamics at play.

Now, she had to carefully weigh the risks involved in both a successful pregnancy and a substantial investment, assessing whether the potential benefits justified the potential drawbacks.

After a two–minute pause, Lysander started to hear Whitney speak. “Actually, I didn’t just undergo examination at the Central Hospital. I’ve visited all the reputable hospitals specializing in treating this condition. Yet, every doctor who reviewed my reports concluded there was nothing wrong with my health.”

That was why Whitney believed it was unlikely that doctors from numerous major hospitals would all make the same diagnostic error.

After all, they had collectively confirmed that there was nothing wrong with her reproductive health.

Shifted into consultation mode, Lysander asked, “If I may inquire, has your husband ever undergone a check–up?”

It seemed Whitney had anticipated that question. She gently shook her head and answered, “My husband has undergone just as many tests as I have, and he seems to be in the pink of health too.”

Lysander couldn’t help but ponder. If both husband and wife are perfectly healthy, how could they possibly struggle to conceive? While it’s acknowledged that pregnancy is often a matter of chance, it appears luck isn’t favoring them.

Daphne, too, felt utterly perplexed upon hearing this. She looked at Lysander with a mix of concern an

and doubt, fearing that her efforts to assist might inadvertently offend Whitney.

Lysander glanced at her, offering a reassuring look, then paused before asking, “Ms. Spears, would you mind if I review your medical report?”

“I didn’t bring my medical report with me today since I came to attend the banquet,” she said. “However, given your affiliation with the Central Hospital, you should be able to access my medical records.”
