Chapter 39 The Incident That Happened Two Years Ago
Betty’s face turned pale. “You also know what happened two years ago, right?”
If Kerwin had investigated Betty, he must knew about that incident that happened two years ago.
Kerwin looked at Betty’s pale face and said, “I know what happened.”
He knew what had happened two years ago, but he had only heard the rumored version and had not
investigated it in depth.
He didn’t investigate at first because he didn’t care. Later, he didn’t investigate because he wanted
Betty to tell him herself.
Betty’s face turned paler as she forced a smile. “If you knew that, why did you still want to marry
me?”
“At first, it was because I didn’t care.” Looking at Betty, Kerwin didn’t want to hide his true feelings. “I only needed a wife. And a gold-digger is easy for me to control.”
Kerwin’s true thoughts made Betty laugh bitterly.
So he thought that I was a woman who could have a one-night stand with him for money?
At this point, Betty suddenly felt tightness in her chest.
“Anyway…” When Betty bit her lip, she suddenly heard Kerwin speak again. “I just want to hear the truth from you about what happened back then.”
Betty’s body trembled slightly. “The truth?”.
Kerwin nodded at her.
Betty’s voice trembled slightly. “Don’t you think what you’ve found out is the truth?”
Betty stared into Kerwin’s dark eyes. She seemed to want to read his thoughts in those deep, dark eyes.
After a while, Kerwin looked at Betty and said slowly, “I don’t think you’re a woman who would sell herself for money.”
The simple words he said were like a magic spell that stopped Betty in her tracks.
Kerwin thought she looked a little cute and chuckled, “What’s wrong?”
Betty realized she had given herself away and quickly looked away. “Nothing. I’m just a little surprised.”
Kerwin looked at her and said in a low voice, “So, Betty, would you like to talk about it?”
Betty’s face turned white again as she recalled what had happened back then.
Looking at Betty’s pale face and slightly quivering eyebrows, Kerwin suddenly felt his heart flip and whispered, “You don’t have to say it if you don’t want to.”
“No, I want to.” Betty took a deep breath and raised her head to stare at him with bright eyes. “Two years ago, I was at a reception for the company where I was interning. I got drunk for some reason after I had a glass of champagne. Then I was taken to a hotel room by someone. And… And…”
Then, Betty finally couldn’t go on.
Kerwin looked at her, his eyes darkening. He asked in a stern tone, “What happened?”
Seeing Betty’s silence, he snapped. “Betty, you have to face it.”
Betty’s body shuddered as she bit her lip and finally finished her sentence. “That glass of champagne was drugged. A sixty-something-year-old man took my virginity.”
After saying that, Betty went limp and clasped into the sofa.
Looking at her pale face, Kerwin got up from his wheelchair, went to sit beside her, and pressed her head into his arms.
“It’s okay,” he reassured her in a low voice. “It’s over. Cry if you want.”
Betty collapsed on his warm, broad shoulders as if she scared her wits out. She didn’t cry either and just shook her head. “There’s nothing to cry about. It’s all over now.”
Instead of crying out loud, Betty made Kerwin more worried about her. Then he couldn’t help but
ask, “How do you know that man is an old man in his sixties?”
Betty’s eyelashes trembled slightly. “That night, I was drugged, so I don’t remember everything very well. And I couldn’t remember what the man looked like. When I woke up, he wasn’t there anymore. And I saw 2,000 dollars on the bed. I later went to the front desk staff to ask about it. They then told me that the person who checked in that night was an elder in his 60s. In addition, someone else later reported to my college that I had been a sugar baby.”
When Betty thought about being verbally abused by people back then, she was still afraid to meet with her college classmates, for when she met with them, she would be insulted.
Betty thought she would never have the courage to talk about it, but when she was in Kerwin’s arms, she felt the strength and told him everything.
At this point, Kerwin’s eyes became darker. Finally, he asked in a low voice, “Which hotel?”
cal
“The Century Hotel, ” Betty replied. When she finished, she froze and looked at Kerwin. “Why do you ask?”
“Nothing.” Kerwin looked puzzled. “Don’t you ever wonder who set you up in the first place?”
After listening to Betty’s description, he thought it was obvious that someone was trying to set her up.
“I’m not sure. And I’ve tried to investigate, but I can’t find any clues,” said Betty. Suddenly, she looked at Kerwin. “Kerwin, do you believe me?”
Kerwin looked sideways and found Betty still nestled on his shoulder and that made him feel better. Then, he whispered, “You’re my wife. Why wouldn’t I believe you?”
The simple words he said made Betty feel heavy.
Betty and Jeffrey had been together for so many years, but Jeffrey had never believed her, while Kerwin did.
“So??” Betty’s voice trembled slightly. “Do you resent me?”
That incident had always been a thorn in Betty’s heart. And she had despaired for a while that she would never get married. Content from NôvelDr(a)ma.Org.
“No.” Kerwin frowned slightly. “It’s not your fault, so why should I blame you?”
He would make the one who committed the crime pay.
Kerwin didn’t say the second half of the sentence and just made a decision in his mind.
After saying that, Betty felt tired and went to rest.
Because Kerwin was by Betty’s side that night, she fell asleep more quickly than on previous days.
At this time, Betty still frowned in her sleep. Looking at her, Kerwin couldn’t help but reach out and smooth out her knitted brows.
Hearing Betty’s steady breathing, Kerwin took out his cell phone and called Peter.
“Hello, Peter,” he lowered his voice and was afraid of waking Betty. “Help me look into what happened to Betty two years ago.”
After hanging up the phone, Kerwin remembered what Betty had just told him and frowned slightly.
Why do I find the name Century Hotel familiar?
