Chapter 26
“Vincent! You were once engaged to Kristin. How can you treat her so heartlessly?” Garner was seething with rage.
“Heartless? Are you kidding me? You bunch of liars are calling me heartless? When she was messing around with another man and ended up with his illegitimate child, wasn’t that heartless?” Vincent snapped at Garner. “Hand her over, or…”
Groggy from fever, Kristin shivered at the sound of Vincent’s voice.
Taking a deep, searing breath to steady herself, Kristin faced Vincent. “I’ll go with you… Just leave my brother and Summer alone.”
In Kristin’s eyes, Vincent was a loose cannon, capable of anything.
He could harm Garner and Summer since he could let those people take turns humiliating
her the night before.
“Kris, you’ve got a fever. We need to get you to the hospital,” Garner said anxiously.
“Garner, I’m fine…” Kristin shook her head, walked over to Vincent, and got into the

Vincent seemed quite pleased with Kristin’s compliance, his gaze softening significantly.
He knew from deep down that he might have gone too far last night.
“So, what fresh hell do you have planned for me today?” Kristin’s voice was hoarse as she
asked.
“Ruby’s been discharged and is staying with the FitzGerald family. You’ll take care of her,” Vincent instructed Kristin to atone for her sins with Ruby.
Kristin had a splitting headache and felt feverishly weak, leaning against the car window.
She had no strength to fight back.
“I won’t stay there,” Kristin resisted the idea of not living with the FitzGerald family.
“Heard you’re job hunting? That little bastard of yours can’t get into kindergarten, can he?” Vincent glanced at Kristin.
Kristin clenched her fists, taking a deep breath. “What do you want…”
“Take good care of Ruby, and I’ll pay you a salary of ten grand. If you do well, I might help sort out the schooling issue for your little bastard,” Vincent said, frowning.
He felt a tad guilty about the night before, and this was his way of making amends.
Ten thousand dollars was nothing to Vincent, and so was helping with the kid’s schooling.
But for Kristin, ten grand a month was a dream salary.

Leaning against the window and feeling diewey, Kristin thought she’d be done for the day if she could make it to nine at night.
“Vincent Kristin got out of the car, her voice hourse, and she hesitantly began, “Cou get an advance on my wages?”
Summer’s schooling wasn’t cheap, and a regular kindergarten cost about five grand for two months of tuition and expenses.
Vincent scowled, clearly displeased. “Kristin, are you that desperate?
Kristin fell silent, knowing it was no use begging him.
“Get changed and start taking care of Miss Ruby. Let me remind you. Once you’re in the FitzGerald family, keep your hands clean. No stealing,” the maid threw the uniform at Kristin, her warning dripping with sarcasin
Kristin looked down, not responding.
“And one more thing. Mr. Rhett is coming home today. You better watch yourself. If you dare piss him off, nobody can save you,” the maid pointed at Kristin’s head as she snapped.
Kristin instinctively stepped back, clutching the few notes in her pocket, the money she’d earned from recycling bottles, She still hadn’t gathered enough to pay back Rhett
Nearly a thousand bucks was no small sum for Kristin.
“Rhett’s coming home?” Vincent was surprised. With their father Holcomb away, why had Rhett come home so frequently lately?
“He told you… to wait for him at home,” the maid whispered.
Vincent felt an inexplicable panic. Rhett never called him directly, sending messages through the maid, but if Rhett had told him to wait at home, it meant Rhett knew he’d messed up
somehow.
Clutching his fists in frustration, Vincent stormed into his study.
He hadn’t made any big mistakes at the company recently, so what did Rhett want with him?
Could it be about Caleb? He had approached Mr. Bryce of Aurora Tech without Rhett’s
consent.
Vincent felt suffocated. With Rhett breathing down his neck, he thought he had to tread on eggshells.
In a fit of irritation, he knocked everything off his desk.Content protected by Nôv/el(D)rama.Org.
Was Rhett going to lord over him forever? As long as Rhett was around, Vincent felt he could never hold his head high.
Rhett was like an untouchable deity in the FitzGerald family, seemingly flawless, enshrined on a pedestal.
But Vincent believed Rhett would make mistakes. Rhett better make sure no skeletons came tumbling out of his closet! Sooner or later, he’d drag Rhett down from that high horse.
