CHAPTER 18
In a marriage of convenience among the rich, it was common for the man to have a few mistresses. As long as it didn’t affect the wife’s status, it didn’t matter if they did.
As a mother, Evelyn wouldn’t interfere in such matters. Her words today. could be considered a promise to Miranda.
She expected Miranda to be grateful after what she’d said. However, Miranda scoffed instead.
Miranda said, “Mrs. Johnson, perhaps you should bless another soul with that offer. I don’t think it’s for me. Besides, I’ve broken up with Hansel. It’s best we treat each other as strangers from here on out.”
Previously, she’d tolerated Evelyn’s antics unconditionally for Hansel’s sake.
Evelyn lamented that Miranda wasn’t highly educated and had never studied abroad. She also disliked the fact that Miranda had been jobless after graduation. In a nutshell, she thought Miranda was unworthy of her precious
Son
If things had been the same as before, Miranda would’ve tried her best to please Evelyn. But now that she’d decided to cast Hansel aside, who was Evelyn to her?
How could she tolerate someone who degraded her so blatantly?
“Oh, right. Mrs. Johnson, here’s a suggestion.”
Evelyn looked at Miranda questioningly. The latter smiled. “You shouldn’t be so mean in the future because… you might end up with a black eye.
“Besides, the saying for what you meant earlier is ‘fine feathers do not make fine birds‘. You should note that down.”
Then, she casually turned and went into the library.
Evelyn stood rooted to the spot, her eyes widening in shock. “What did she say? H–How dare she speak to me like that? Who does she think she is? Does she even want to be Hansel’s wife?”
She grabbed Tina’s arm and shook it vigorously. Thanks to that, Tina snapped out of her stupor. She mumbled, “Mon did Miranda say she… has broken up with Hansel?”
Evelyn snorted. “Do you believe her?”
“You’re right. They’ve broken up so many times, yet they always get back together.”
After all, it was widely known that Miranda was head over heels in love with Hansel. She was like a loyal dog who’d never leave its owner.
Tina withdrew her gaze. “Mom, don’t forget what we’re here for. You’re supposed to accompany me to meet the college’s higher–ups.”
She checked the time. They’d be late if they dawdled any longer.
Evelyn had to take a deep breath to quell her anger. “Let’s go. Miranda is no one important. We can’t let her get in the way of such an important matter!”
Bedford College Library had been around for a long time. It housed a comprehensive list of books and was known as “the treasury of knowledge“.
Miranda went around the library twice before she could find a seat. Coincidentally, it was just in front of the bookshelf where books on
bioinformatics were arranged. This way, it was convenient for her to search for more information whenever she needed to.
She scanned the topmost shelf. To her surprise, she spotted Paul’s name. Feeling curious, she pulled the book out.
A picture of the endless universe adorned its cover. It gave her the same impression Paul had left on her profound with extensive knowledge while giving off a tranquil vibe.
It was a research note on the structure and dynamics of the protein molecule
a study that showcased the intersection between biology and physics.
As she turned to the first page, a handwritten introduction appeared before her. It read, “All that exists is interconnected, and nothing bounds separate
fields of knowledge.”
Only geniuses like him who excelled in all subjects could confidently make such a statement about cross–disciplinary studies.
Without Miranda realizing it, the morning flew by. She had almost finished. reading the book.
Although she’d majored in bioinformatics, she’d scored well in physics too.
At 1:00 pm, she closed the book and returned it to its spot on the shelf. As she took a deep breath, she realized she was hungry. She left the library, intending to have lunch before continuing her revision.
Halfway through her meal, she received a call from Winter.
“What’s up, Winter?”
“Are you home?”
“No, I’m not. I’m at the library.” Miranda took a sip of water before continuing, “Is anything the matter?”

Winter still felt annoyed when she thought about it. “He demanded to know where you were as soon as he saw me. Seriously, why would I tell him? Did you bump into him these couple of days?”
