When fate plays its hand 939
Chapter 0939
Paul could fire anyone in the lab with a mere sentence.
Yet, until now, Silas and the others had never considered the possibility that one of them. would leave the lab under the pretext of “termination of employment“.
Sandy was stunned. The word “firing” had come out of nowhere. What did “due to certain reasons” even mean? novelbin
She recalled that Elizabeth had taken sick leave, so she asked tentatively, “…Is Lizzy’s condition serious?!
But even so; it didn’t seem like a valid reason to fire her. It was hard to believe Paul would fire Elizabeth just because of her health problems.
Silas nodded and asked, “Can you share the reason behind this decision?”
Paul didn’t answer. Instead, he said, “Elizabeth’s current project will be temporarily transferred to Bryan. Make sure the transition is done quickly.”
From the moment Paul started speaking to when he suddenly mentioned his name, Bryan was left completely blindsided. His mind went blank, and he couldn’t process anything.
It felt as though his ears were stuffed, which drowned out all the other sounds around him. He could only hear Paul’s words; “termination of employment“-repeating in his mind.
Bryan finally snapped out of his daze when Sandy, sitting next to him, tugged his arm under
the table.
Still confused, he turned to Paul. “…Dr. Jefferson, why?
Paul gave him the same look as before. Without saying a word, he strode away and left behind a room full of shocked and confused faces.
The atmosphere in the lab was unusually depressing for the rest of the morning.
Bryan picked up his phone several times. He wanted to call Elizabeth and find out what had happened. But each time, he put it down again.
Did she know about this? And if she didn’t, how was he supposed to tell her?
Although Paul hadn’t explicitly stated anything, Bryan already had a vague sense of what had happened.
For someone as fair and rational as Paul to make such a harsh, uncompromising decision, Elizabeth must have crossed a line–one that went against his principles. But what had happened during the summit?
At the same time, Elizabeth opened the notification email. The words “termination of
employnient” seemed almost foreign to her. She stared at the screen for two minutes before it finally hit her–Paul had fired her.
The repercussions of her actions had finally caught up with her. The sense of relief and smugness she had felt several days ago now felt like a cruel joke.
Fired? How could she, Elizabeth Lincoln, possibly be fired?
Without answering her parents‘ questions, she stormed out of the house, jumped into her car, and sped toward the lab.
But when she tried to enter, her fingerprint and is recognition failed. She couldn’t even get through the front door.
“Paul Jefferson! Open the door! Let me in! Open up!” she shouted. “You think you can keep me out? Open the damn door!”
After a moment, Elizabeth yelled, “Bryan, I know you’re in there. Do you have the heart to watch me knock like a fool when you knew I couldn’t get in?
Inside the lab, Bryan was on edge and glanced at Paul several times before finally speaking up. “Dr. Jefferson, how about letting Lizzy in? Some things are better said in person. If she’s going to face the consequences, she deserves to know why, right?”
Paul stared at him for a long moment, then said, “Fine. Let her in.”
Bryan wasn’t sure what to make of Paul’s intense gaze, but a sense of relief flooded him as he realized the woman he cared about wouldn’t have to endure such humiliation.
However, he would soon regret that decision.
