What Separates Me and You

Chapter 132 Forgetting an Important Matter

Josephine exited the study and followed Conrad downstairs for dinner.

She sat at the dining table quietly while eating her dinner absent-mindedly. It was apparent that her eyes weren’t focused on anything at all.

When Conrad noticed her spacing out, he couldn’t help but frown. It was torturous for a young woman like her to stay home without company.

Josephine took a couple of bites before shaking her head, not wanting to eat anymore. This is the property of Nô-velDrama.Org.

Conrad left once he was done cleaning up. Once again, Josephine was left alone in the huge

mansion.

She walked over to the couch and sat down. Then, she turned on the television and started. watching the cartoons.

Josephine had a feeling that she seemed to have forgotten something, but she couldn’t remember what it was.

She just stared at the television quietly while waiting for Lewis to return home, a habit she had developed.

Since she had yet to break her fever, her head was still in a muddled state.

Suddenly, her phone chimed with a loud notification sound. Josephine turned around to grab the phone from the couch. It turned out that Avery had sent her a text message.

“Josie, I’m in Flinton now,” the text wrote.

It was just a simple text message, but Josephine went into deep thought after reading it.

She responded by typing, “When did you leave?”

A few seconds later, Avery replied, “Yesterday, duh. I touched down today. Didn’t you pay attention to my Instagram feed? I was in Egraria yesterday.”

Josephine paused for a moment, still confused by Avery’s text messages. She texted, “When exactly did you leave Elysium? Why didn’t you tell me in advance?”

It was Avery’s turn to be silent.

A few minutes later, she finally texted Josephine, “Josie, are you alright?”

That sentence puzzled Josephine even more. She texted her reply immediately. “What’s wrong?”

At that moment, Avery’s brows were tangled in a deep frown. She wasn’t even sure if Josephine was the person she was texting right now.

Why would Josephine ask her about the exact date of her departure flight from Elysium?

Avery was silent for a moment before she finally keyed in her reply. “Don’t you remember anything from before?”

Josephine’s fingers paused over the keyboard. She closed her eyes and started recollecting the incidents that had recently happened to her the best she could, but she couldn’t remember when exactly Avery had left.

Hence, she texted, “What happened?”

Avery didn’t dare to reply to Josephine on a whim. She was worried that a certain shameless man was trying to bait her answer by pretending to be her friend.

So, Avery drafted a random reply on the spot. “It’s nothing. It must be very late for you right now. You should go to bed soon.”

When Josephine texted Avery back, the latter no longer replied to her.

Josephine lay on the couch while re-reading her conversation with Avery over and over again. The previous chat log had been deleted, except for their exchange just now.

She kept scrolling up and down multiple times, yet she could not recall what happened recently.

In the end, she gave up on trying to remember anything and tossed her phone aside in defeat.

Someone opened the main door from the outside a while later, prompting Josephine to stand up from the couch immediately.

It was still raining outside. When Lewis entered the mansion, there were beads of raindrops staining his shoulders.

He then proceeded to remove his jacket. Just as he was about to dispose of his jacket, a pair of hands snatched it away and promptly hung it on a nearby coat rack.

Lewis was slightly stunned by what just happened. He cast a confused glance in the direction of the silhouette.

Once Josephine was done hanging the jacket, she turned around to approach him with a smile. on her face. Then, she gestured, “Have you eaten?”

Lewis stared at her silently for a while before asking, “Have you not eaten yet?”

He glanced at the clock on the wall as he spoke. It was already 11 pm by then.

Surprised, Josephine followed Lewis’ gaze all the way to the clock. She pursed her lips upon noticing the time before gesturing, “I’m sorry. I completely forgot about the time.”

When Lewis noticed how guilty Josephine looked, he reached out to pat her on the head. “It’s fine. Have you eaten, though?”

Josephine nodded in response.

“Then you should hurry up and rest.” As he spoke, he placed his cold hand on her forehead.” You’re still a little warmer than usual.”

The moment Lewis’ words fell, he scooped Josephine into his arms and headed upstairs in large strides.

Josephine tilted her head upward to look at him. He carried her to the bedroom with a calm expression on his face before placing her down on the bed. After that, he passed her some medicine.

She accepted the medicine and slid them into her mouth before swallowing them without a word.

Lewis kept staring at Josephine unblinkingly. Sensing his gaze, she instinctively raised her head and locked eyes with him.

A glimmer of confusion emanated from his eyes, perplexing her in return. All she did was flash him a small smile.

In a sudden gesture, Lewis closed the gap, bringing them within inches of each other, their faces now in intimate proximity. He looked like he was straining to find the answer on Josephine’s face.

The latter pursed her lips as she raised her hand to caress Lewis’ cheek.

After that, she started gesturing to him. “I’m down with the flu, so I don’t want you to get infected.”

“I’m not afraid.” Lewis’ eyes bored into Josephine’s as he spoke in a lowered voice.

Josephine reacted by taking the initiative to plant a light kiss on Lewis’ lips. She retreated from his personal bubble the moment she was done.

Lewis pursed his lips tightly in return. He raised his hand to grab Josephine’s without saying. anything. All he did was stare at her deeply.

Josephine didn’t avoid his gaze and touch at all. Instead, she stared back boldly. The fear and unfamiliarity that used to occupy her eyes that morning were nowhere to be seen.

It was as if they had returned to the past.

That was the reason why Lewis was confused.

Was Josephine capable of acting?

The answer was no. Anyone could see through her shoddy acting immediately had she decided to put on a facade.

A long time later, Lewis finally returned the kiss.

When Josephine felt his lips pressing into hers, she closed her eyes.

Surprisingly enough, Lewis let go of her and told her to go to bed early.

Josephine did what she was told while watching Lewis leave her bedroom.

As Lewis turned around to shut the door, he stole a discreet glance at the woman reclining on the bed. Josephine was lying quietly on her side, her head bolstered by her palm, as she stared at Lewis.

Something flashed across his eyes at that moment, prompting him to grab the doorknob and close the door.

Now that the effects of the medicine were starting to kick in, Josephine could feel her eyelids growing heavy.

Later that night, she woke up with a startle. Then, she stared at the ceiling above her head, a dazed look on her face.

Avery had left the country.

One month ago, she left Elysium because of the trap Seth had set up for her. Lewis was the one who allowed it to happen as well.

Josephine couldn’t believe that she had forgotten such an important incident.

Lewis wasn’t home the next morning.

Josephine waited for the rain to stop before texting Lewis about her intention to visit the hospital, seeing as her fever persisted and was causing her great discomfort.

A short time later, Dr. Halliday came to Styx Mansion.

“Madam, are you still having a fever? I’ll check on you right now.”

Setting his medical kit aside, the doctor rummaged through its contents in search of his stethoscope.

Josephine quickly stopped him with a gesture. Then, she pulled out her phone and typed at message for him. “Dr. Halliday, why do I keep forgetting about random events lately and only to recall them a while later?”

Many trivial matters from the past slipped Josephine’s mind, and she wouldn’t even think twice about them.

However, when she was chatting with Avery last night, the latter reminded her of an important incident that she had actually forgotten about.

When Dr. Halliday read the message on the phone, his expression immediately became serious.

He stared at Josephine for a long time before asking, “Have you been forgetting about random things that occurred at any point in your life, or are you starting to forget about recent events?

Josephine shook her head in response. She wrote, “I don’t know. I keep forgetting about stuff, but then I’d remember them later on. I didn’t pay attention to what they are.”

Dr. Halliday was silent for a moment. Then, he said, “You should pay close attention to your memory during the next two days. Write down everything that you remember all of a sudden. in order to determine if the events are random or recent.”

Josephine replied with another message, “What’s the difference?”

Dr. Halliday explained, “If the events are random, your brain has most likely suffered from an injury that caused you to have dissociative amnesia. However, if you keep forgetting about recent events-”

Josephine stared at the doctor nervously as she waited for him to end his sentence.

Dr. Halliday found it difficult to continue speaking. He opened his mouth, finally deciding to steel his resolve. “If you’ve been forgetting about recent events, you most likely have-”

Josephine held her breath nervously.

“Alzheimer’s disease.”
