What Separates Me and You

Chapter 128 He Was So Arrogant

Then again, that person didn’t have a reason to do this to Robert. Who could it be?

No matter how much Robert racked his brain, he could never get to the bottom of the mystery. He propped his forehead against his palm in sheer frustration as he cycled through every possible person in his life who could bear to cause such harm to his daughter and her children.

Other than Lewis, the other man who harbored such motives could only be Lily’s husband, Derek Moss.

“What?” Lewis asked.

“Nothing.”

Josephine’s gaze was trained on Lewis’ face. His expression was a mask of complete calmness as opposed to Robert’s obvious melancholy.

It was as if Lewis was just an outsider in this scenario.

Then again, that man didn’t have a relationship with Lily to begin with. Both of them weren’t related to each other by blood, after all. Judging from Lewis’ personality, he wasn’t the type to feel sorrow for Lily even if she truly died.

Josephine’s eyes went dull as she thought about Lewis’ emotionless facade. Someone like him might not be saddened by anyone’s death in life.

When Nancy lost control of her car and crashed into a tree, Lewis didn’t even bother to visit her. He was extremely cold to his own father, Robert, as well.

If Josephine were to die one day, would Lewis treat her the same way he had treated Nancy as well-by not sparing her a glance?

Silence enveloped the car, crafting an atmosphere in which even the most delicate sound, like the drop of a pin, could be discerned by all. Josephine and Lewis occasionally caught the soft, nearly imperceptible sighs emanating from Robert, who occupied the rear seat.

That meant he must have known that Lily was truly dead. Otherwise, he would never sigh so

much.

Two hours later, the trio returned to Alvarez Manor.

Everyone had gathered in the mansion, and that included Seth, Daphne, and the rest. At that time, a serious expression was already present on his face. Clearly, he must have thought of something.

Given the current state of affairs, even if he were to make the correct guess, there was nothing he could do to change the situation.

“Dad.” Daphne stood up immediately. She was the only one with a look of visible nervousness

out of everyone in the mansion.

At the same time, she was also the only one looking very anxious. Considering her close relationship with Lily, it was peculiar to witness such a high level of distress from her.

Even Robert couldn’t help but glance at her weirdly.

“So? What’s the result, Dad? Is that victim really Lily?”

Robert shook his head in response. “We have yet to determine her identity, but the results should be available soon. We found her identification documents in her bag. We will know once the DNA analysis of the corpse is complete.”

Daphne’s complexion went deathly pale. She clenched her fists while shooting a look in Lewis’ direction without moving her head.

However, the latter didn’t even look at her. Instead, he walked over to a couch and sat down with his legs crossed elegantly while propping an elbow on the armrest to support his head. He looked like a laidback man who was relaxing on the couch at that moment.

Seth was unusually quiet that evening. He didn’t utter a word at all.

Based on the questions Daphne had asked him the day before, it wasn’t difficult for Seth to guess what truly happened after witnessing her behavior.

Seth thought to himself, “How interesting.”

There was no question that Robert would come under intense scrutiny as the one responsible for Lily’s death. If Seth intended to bring an end to this matter once and for all, he would have to publicly expose Daphne in front of the Alvarez family.

That was the option Lewis had given him.

If Seth were to expose Daphne, the latter would definitely lash out in a panic, seeing as she was driven into a corner. When that happened, she might even drag him down with her.

Basically, Lewis was declaring war against Seth.

That man sure was arrogant.

Meanwhile, Nancy pretended to grieve for the victim. “Oh dear, what a shame. I really hope Lily is safe and sound.”

Robert didn’t say anything in response. He remained silent while looking quite grim. Everyone in the mansion waited for the authorities to contact Robert.

It turned out that they didn’t have to wait for a long time. At around 11 pm, Robert received a call asking him to claim the body.

Daphne quickly came up with an excuse to take care of Bambam at home to avoid going with the family. On the other hand, Nancy felt that she would be cursed with misfortune if she were

to visit the morgue, so she excused herself after claiming that she had a headache.

The remaining four people could fit into one car. Seth took on the role of the driver, whereas Josephine and Lewis took the backseat. Hence, Robert could only take the passenger seat.

Soon, they arrived at the police station’s morgue. Before they entered, they could hear someone crying from within. Published by Nôv'elD/rama.Org.

The frigid air made Josephine uncomfortable. In fact, she was starting to have difficulty breathing. That feeling intensified when she discovered that Lily was burned to death, causing her to start imagining how Lily’s body looked like.

Once she reached the doorway, Josephine could see many people crowding inside the morgue. The only person she knew was Derek, Lily’s husband.

There was another woman who was crying her heart out. She was the saddest among the crowd. Derek supported her while she leaned into his shoulder, her eyes already red and puffy from all the

crying.

That woman was Lily’s biological mother, Layla Saunders, who had rushed to the morgue all the way from another city.

The rest of the crowd consisted of Lily’s relatives from her mother’s family. The tragedy also saddened them, but they weren’t mourning for Lily. Instead, they were grieving for the loss of their grandchildren.

Two bodies were placed on either side of Lily’s corpse. They were covered with white sheets, but everyone could still vaguely recognize the children based on their outlines.

When Robert walked into the morgue, Layla suddenly rushed in his direction and started beating him up.

“Robert, you bastard! I want my daughter back! Give Lily back to me, goddamn it! Oh, my poor daughter! What sort of father are you, huh? Why can’t you even protect your own daughter?”

Robert was already annoyed from the start. Now that Layla kept hitting and scolding him, he reacted by shoving her away impatiently. “Enough!”

Layla stumbled backward as a result. If it weren’t for Derek supporting her in time, she would have fallen to the ground.

The woman stared at Robert in a daze before breaking down once again. “Robert Alvarez, how dare you shove me after losing your own daughter! Were you the one behind her death? Did

you

kill her? You’re a fucking killer! I can’t believe a bastard like you is so cruel to the point that you refuse to spare your own daughter’s life!”

A vein popped out of Robert’s forehead as he glared at Layla. “Shut up! I’m also saddened by Lily’s death, but don’t go around slandering my reputation without any evidence like the

shrew you are! No matter what you say, she won’t come back to life! Do you hear me?”

Derek started advising Layla as well. “Mom, calm down. The truth is still hidden for now. The real culprit is still out there somewhere as we speak. If they were to witness us fighting with each other at a time like this, they might be laughing at our idiocy from their hiding spot. We shouldn’t give the culprit the satisfaction they crave for.”

Once Layla heard Derek’s words, she started to calm down. However, she couldn’t help but sob again when she recalled Lily’s brutal death.

Frustrated, Robert brushed off Layla and walked towards the shrouded body of Lily, hidden beneath a white sheet. As his hand neared the sheet, he hesitated, unable to summon the courage to expose what lay underneath.

Layla chuckled coldly upon noticing Robert’s hesitance. “Robert, are you that useless to the point that you don’t even have the balls to look at your own daughter? Judging from your cowardice, how can I expect you to catch the culprit? What a joke!”

Thanks to Layla’s provocation, Robert immediately uncovered Lily’s body by yanking the sheet away.

The moment Josephine laid her eyes on the corpse, she could feel her stomach churning wildly. Almost immediately, she turned around and buried her head into Lewis’ chest, not daring to look at Lily.

Lewis wrapped his arms around her while patting her back. At the same time, his gaze was trained on the corpse, an unreadable expression on his face.

As expected, the corpse was charred, but not to completion. There were still patches of bright red amidst the blackened surface, making the body look like a platter of roasted meat that was cooked very badly.

Robert almost puked on the spot after seeing the body, but thankfully, he was able to suppress his urge.

When Layla saw Lily’s horrible visage, she started sobbing hysterically once again. At one point, she looked like she was about to collapse.

Derek turned his head away as well, not wanting to look at the charred corpse. He never expected that the woman he had spent many moons with would be reduced to this state. Even though he didn’t break down like the others, he was still unable to conceal the overwhelming grief that was written all over his face.

Meanwhile, Lewis stared at the body for a while before dragging Josephine out of the morgue.

She kept shivering like mad the whole time. Perhaps it was due to the low temperature or the fact that she was terrified by Lily’s corpse.

Josephine’s hands were extremely cold by then, so she felt scorching heat coming from Lewis’ hands.

Once they got into the car, Lewis increased the temperature of the internal air condition to the maximum. However, Josephine continued to hug herself while shivering.

Lewis placed a hand on her cheek before saying, “Don’t be afraid. Remember how she bullied you in the past.” 2

When Josephine heard those words, she turned to look at him in surprise.

The man still looked nonchalant as ever, but Josephine noticed the coldness in his

After she heard Lewis’ question, she could feel chills running down her spine and seeping into her bones, making her shiver even more violently.
