Epilogue: New beginnings
At Edward’s mansion, the whole family sat together for the first time since the explosion. The blast that claimed three of Mr Edward’s employees.
Mr Edward accompanied by David made a press briefing assuring the country that his family was safe and the explosion was caused by a gas leak. Now with the renovations complete, the mansion stood greater than it was before.
Mr Edward, Ms Lucy, and Mr Johnson sat in the garden talking mostly about their childhood and how their lives had changed since they fell apart.
Thanks to Diana’s confession, they now knew her grandfather was the one who planted the gold jewellery in Edward’s jacket, sending him to prison.
Moses’ father was an employee at Johnson’s farm but got fired when his drinking and negligence caused the farm a handful of cattle. When Edward’s father replaced him, Moses father committed suicide, and since then, Moses blamed Edward for his ruined childhood.
When Edward started the organization, Moses’ empire collapsed.
He then sent his son to kill Edward but the bullet caught Isabella, Edward’s wife. After Peter’s retaliation, he was left paralysed and all his family members dead.
With the few connections he had, he learnt about Diana and contacted her. Moses trained her secretly for years and brainwashed her into destroying and killing Edward’s family. He wanted to take over Edwards’ businesses believing he deserved his wealth.Têxt © NôvelDrama.Org.
With everything out in the open, Moses was arrested and sent to prison for the rest of his life to pay for his crimes.
Their grand children’s marriage uniting them, Johnson and Edward restored their brotherhood and merged their two family businesses into one strong empire.
“Aunt is very happy, finally she is back with her family.” Melissa smiled watching her aunt seated next to Richard. Later Robert joined them with Lisa by his side. After months of convincing her, she agreed to give their relationship a chance.
“Yes, I’ve never seen uncle Richard happier. After all aunt Cassandra’s effort to keep them apart, they managed to find each other and it’s all because of you.” Mark held Melissa in his arms thankful for the second chance.
“No, you made it happen.” She leaned on Mark’s chest.
When she smiled at him, his heart fluttered.
That day when Diana hit Melissa on the head, she fell on the door which flung open throwing her out as the car overturned down the hill.
Finding her lying half consciously in the bushes covered in blood, Mark cried in pain wishing he had done more to protect her. He had failed to protect her. Save her from the pain she went through.
Holding her in his arms after months in the hospital fighting for her life, was a miracle he would forever be grateful for.
“I’m glad you are here with me.” He confessed as he placed a light kiss on her head.
“Thank you for holding onto me.” Smiling, she glanced at her family then at him. “I’m sorry I couldn’t save our baby.” Gazing at him, she frowned touching her stomach as tears filled her eyes.
“It was not your fault, love.”
As tears fell soaking his shirt, she remembered the first news she got when she woke up on the hospital bed.
Unable to bear the excruciating pain in her stomach after the second surgery, she forced the doctor to tell her what was wrong.
“I’m sorry Mrs Johnson, you lost your pregnancy and we had to operate on you to stop the bleeding.” The doctor’s words felt like ice cold water splashed on her face.
That day’s trauma and the impact that she suffered flying out of the car, and hitting herself on the trees caused her to lose her two months old pregnancy.
“What did you say? I… I was pregnant?” Running her hand over her flat belly, tears filled Melissa’s eyes.
Her second child was gone before she even realized she was going to be a mother again.
“That’s enough, this is a happy day. No more tears.” Mark smiled gazing into her hazel brown eyes. “We can always have another baby.” He assured her then kissed her cheeks wiping her tears soothing her not to fall apart again.
After the doctors told her she had suffered a miscarriage, Melissa fell into depression. For two days she didn’t utter a word to anyone, no matter how hard the family and her friends cheered her up. Only Tommy’s presence brought a smile to her face.
“Mark, I’m okay.” She touched his face and smiled at him. “I’m grateful for you and the whole family’s support.” She sighed looking at all of them seated in the garden chatting while enjoying their meal. Including her uncle who was in a wheelchair.
The head injury brought complications that left him paralyzed but he was now ready to start over a new life with his family. He started a foundation to support young people in the community through rehabilitation and education. Giving them a second chance in life.
“All this happened because of you. You brought all of them together.” Mark wrapped his arms around her waist, hugging her tightly.
“Thanks to my uncle you survived that explosion.” She smiled watching Luke play with Tommy and David.
“Your uncle is a good man, despite every bad thing he did in the past.” He said turning her to face him. “Are you sure about getting Mr Steven out of jail?” Mark questioned brushing her hair from her face.
“Yes, I’m sure. It’s the least I can do after what my family did to him. My godfather is a good man too. His only mistake was loving and spoiling Diana. He deserves to be happy with his family.” Leaning on his chest she sighed and closed her eyes. “At times I wish I could have saved Diana. Having her locked up in jail would probably change her.” She voiced what she felt was her shortcoming.
“I guess Diana got what she deserved. I know you loved her like a sister Melissa, but she hurt many people. Don’t forget she tried to kill us.”
“I don’t think she wanted that? Maybe if I had spoken to her or tried to get close to her, her life would have been spared.”
“No, nothing can change such an evil person. Don’t be too hard on yourself honey. You can’t save everyone.” He kissed her forehead holding her close.
“You’re right, she probably was in deep. There is nothing I could do to save her but burning to ashes was too cruel a death for her. I’m glad it’s all over now and you are here with me. Thank you for helping me find the truth. I love you so much Mark Johnson.”
“I’ll always be here to love and protect you Melissa. Together for eternity.” He smiled and captured her lips in a sensual hot loving kiss.
As the whole family including his parents on a video call from the ranch cheered, the fireworks displayed in the sky ushering in the new year.
She had finally found her family, the family she never dreamt of but will always be grateful for.
With Mark and her son Tommy beside her, Melissa welcomed the new year which held the promise of a happy and peaceful life.
