Chapter thirty-nine
I feel so restless, and it’s really starting to concern me. Why am I experiencing these unsettling emotions? It’s as if I’m on the brink of something incredibly precious to me, yet it also feels strangely out of reach.
Fuck!
I ran my fingers through my hair in frustration before entering the ceremonial room. The atmosphere was buzzing with excitement. I tilted my head, hoping to catch a glimpse of the frightened slave who had been there moments before, but to my dismay, she was nowhere to be seen.
I fixed my gaze on the girl standing on the stage, her tag displaying the number three prominently. Meaning that two slaves had already been sold.
Shaking my head, I gulped hard and swiftly tried to sneak away, but I accidentally bumped into someone. The sudden impact made the files she was carrying slip from her grasp and scatter onto the ground.
Oh no not again!
“I’m sorry, please,” I begged, my words hanging in the tense air, but all I got in response was a menacing snarl that sent shivers down my spine.
“Dog,” she muttered as I raised my head, only to be met by the fierce gaze of Serena, her expression filled with anger.
Fuck it, why this wicked soul? My jaw clenched immediately in disdain.
Seeing the look on my face, a dangerous smirk suddenly appeared on her lips. Leaning in close, she whispered with a snarl. “Now,” she pointed to the ground, and my gaze followed her finger, which directed me to the scattered files. “Pack it all up and return it to the king’s chamber,” she commanded.
“King’s chamber!” I gasped, my eyes widening in disbelief.
Shrugging, she twitched one brow up in mockery. Her gaze cold and piercing, “That’s your punishment,” she uttered, her words cutting through the tense silence between us.
“Bu…. but,”
“Whatever you encounter in there, you take,”
Her next words jolted my senses back in a forceful flash. I immediately snapped my head towards her. My gaze widened, and I could feel the sudden nervous heat crawling down my skin. “I…I mean, sorry, but….” I stammered, trying to form a coherent sentence. But before I could gather my thoughts, she had already left.Exclusive content from NôvelDrama.Org.
Feeling the nerves, I rubbed my palms anxiously. This night just keeps going downhill. Why am I always so clumsy?
Slowly, I squatted down and swiftly picked up the scattered files, hurriedly packing them. I can’t face that demon in his room alone.
It is more like I’m willingly stepping into my own grave if I go there alone; there’s still so much I need to accomplish before leaving this earth.
Shaking my head as the image of that demon slicing my head from my body flashes through my mind, sending shivers down my bones.
No no no…… no!
Shaking my head, I rushed back to where I was standing earlier, holding the files, I realized Alma was nowhere to be found. “Oh no! Where could she possibly have gone?” I scanned the room frantically, but couldn’t spot her anywhere.
Looking at the terrified slaves on the stage, I gazed down at the files in my hand and released a weary sigh. My brow twitched up in disgust, it is damn obvious that I can’t bear to witness this scene, but then again… That would mean facing that demon alone.
Dragging in a deep breath, I shut my eyes tightly. “Well, it’s not like I have any other option,” I muttered to myself, swallowing hard. With force, I opened my eyes and made my way out of the building.
Walking around the pack in the night, I kept looking around the area.
“How can I find the demon’s chamber at this moment, when everywhere is just dark?” I muttered, clutching the files tightly to prevent the night breeze from whisking them away. The air outside is now chilly. My teeth grit and my body trembles as the cold winter wind sweeps over me.
“Hey!”
But then a deep, dreadful voice echoed from behind, giving me a sudden jolt. I quickly spun around to see the intruder, coming face-to-face with a scary security guard.
“What’s a dog doing? Roaming around instead of being inside that ceremonial building,” the man snapped, giving me a stern look.
“I was sent on an errand,” I extended my hand toward him, showing the files.
He disgustedly eyed me up and down before shooting me a skeptical glance. He roughly grabbed the files from my grasp. I shrugged and stood by as he perused the documents, rubbing my palms together to calm my trembling nerves and the cold breeze almost freezing me to death.
However, merely looking at that guard, I couldn’t help but roll my eyes at him. There he was, snug in his parka with the hood covering his head, while I, the typical worthless slave, was left shivering in my thin, loose fabric under the intense chilly night. The worst is that I am freezing to death here while the monster is intentionally taking his sweet time reading through the files.
I didn’t even know what that file was all about. Really, how could I be so careless? I should have taken a quick peek.
If I really need to escape, I have to be cautious of everything happening around me.
Rearranging the files, I heard him let out a slight cough before shooting me a suspicious glance. “Who handed you these files?”
“Serena,” I mumbled, but he snapped at me quickly, and before I knew it, I found myself taking a sudden step back. “Not just Serena, dog!” His piercing gaze was sharp and cold, making me gulp and look away instantly.
“These monsters!” I seethed silently, gritting my teeth in fury. All I could think about right now was giving him a good smack across the face.
“Put some seniority in her name, she is your senior… Do you hear me dog?!”
To cut the chatter, I just nodded. “Good,” he smirked and roughly shoved the files into my hands.
“Be quick and return to the ceremony,” he instructed, but I just nodded and hurried off to the next building.
As soon as I stepped foot inside the building, memories from that other night flashed through my mind. Kneeling in the mercy of that demon and having his cock shoved down my throat. The horrifying images made me involuntarily cringe.
“You can do this,” I whispered to myself, eyes shut while taking deep breaths. “You got this, Emma, just dump those files in his room and make a run for it,” I muttered as if it were that simple.
Nodding, I began walking aimlessly inside, with no clear destination in mind. The corridors seemed confusing, and it felt like I was going around in circles.
Ah…. What’s this?!
The routine persisted as I found myself returning to the same spot. “Screw it,” I muttered quietly, but then I immediately felt a warm hand placed gently on my shoulder.
“Holy crap!” Surprised, I spun around quickly, only to come face to face with those intense black eyes. “Y… you!” I snapped, eyeing him up.
“Sorry, didn’t mean to startle you,” he cleared his throat, holding back a smile.
I glared, stepping back from him. “What are you doing here all alone?” he asked, scanning the area for who knows what. “You shouldn’t be wandering around here alone; it’s not safe for you.”
“What do you want?” I snarled, watching him suspiciously. These manipulators can’t be trusted; a vampire can’t just turn nice to a werewolf in a twinkle of an eye without having an evil agenda under their sleeves so I have to be careful.
“What are you doing here by yourself?” He asked instead, his voice calm and somehow soothing.
Please just focus, Emma!
“What in the world do you want?” I almost yelled at him, my teeth clenching in anger.
I don’t have all that patience though he doesn’t seem bad, but I can’t trust them. We were raised to stay away from them, and besides, I’ve seen him countless times with that beast and others.
“I want nothing,” he shrugged, “I meant no harm,” he added.
“Then leave me alone,” I glared and turned to leave, but he was quick to stop me.
“I believe you’re a bit lost,” I turned to glare at him, but his eyes held a hint of amusement. With a sly raise of his eyebrow, he gestured ahead. I followed his gaze, feeling my face flush with embarrassment. “That’s the door you entered through… Are you heading out? I thought you had some business here,” he remarked, eyeing the files and then back at me.
I have had enough.
“Alright,” I turned to give him a sarcastic smirk. “You’re really keen on helping, huh?” He nodded, meeting my gaze.
“I’m Aristide by the way, and what about you?” He smiled, flashing me his arranged white pearly teeth.
Ignoring him, I gave him a forced smile. I stretched out the files and dumped them in his hands. “Then Aristide help me, and deliver this to your dear king,” I said, wiping the smiles off his face and leaving him utterly puzzled.
“King,” he raised his brow in curiosity. “King Alessandro?” He smiled, curiosity lacing through his tone, while slowly looking down at the files in his hold. Seeing that as an opportunity, I immediately seized the chance and fled from that building.
“Hey! Wait up,”
I heard him called out but I was already out of the building.
Thank goodness!
