The Billionaire’s Pretend Fiancée

The peace offering

Sofie’s POV

“Did you hear about the professor from the faculty of botany? Allegedly, she had sex with five male professors in her faculty, and was caught on camera, and now the professors are getting fired while she’s getting her license revoked, I mean how crazy is that?” Katie rambled, as we placed our food trays on the cafeteria table before taking out seats.

“Yeah, it’s crazy. It’s really crazy.” I muttered, cutting the ham on my plate into smaller pieces.

Katie dropped her cutleries, bunched her hands below her jaw and darted me a pointed look which caused me to sigh and also drop my own cutleries.

“You don’t even know what I’m saying, do you?” She huffed.

I made an offended noise as I glared weakly at her, “I do. You were saying something about a professor who had sex with five other professors, no?”

She shook her head and said, “Okay, fine. You were listening but your mind is clearly not here, what’s going on with you? I noticed you’ve been spacing out since the week began but today is the worst. You literally almost tripped down the stairs earlier on our way to the laboratory. Is everything alright with you?”

“Why wouldn’t it be?” I laughed, in attempt to seem nonchalant but from the unchanging pointed look rooted to Katie’s face, I deduced my attempt had failed.

“I don’t know, you tell me.” She huffed before adding, “But seriously, babe. You know you can always tell me everything that’s bothering you right? As they say, a problem shared is a problem half solved, isn’t it?”

I nodded, already resigned, “Yes, it is. I don’t even know how to begin explaining this to you because even I don’t know what’s going on with him.”

I could feel my face heat up with ire, as my eyes welled up with tears of frustration.

“Him? Your fiancée?”

“Yes, my fiancée. I don’t know if that term is valid anymore, I don’t even know what my position in his life is at this point.” I sniffled, and Katie casted me a sympathetic gaze as she handed me an handkerchief.

“Is it that bad? And you didn’t say anything all these while, I could have at least listened to all your worries.”

“I’m sorry, I felt bad and I didn’t want to bother you with unimportant stuff.” I muttered, dabbing my undereye with the hanky.

She made a disagreeing sound as she looked me in the eye. “No, Sofie. Don’t say that, your problems are not unimportant seeing how bad they have taken a toll on you. Nowadays, you look stressed all the time and today, you even have dark undereye circles.”

I rubbed harder at my eyes as if that could somehow make my dark circles disappear, as the horrendous memories of the night before filled my mind.

How Roman had forcefully had his way with me while treating me like his slut.

I badly wanted to scrub the images off my mind because they badly tortured me but I just couldn’t.

“You know what, Katie? I’m really grateful for your concern but I’ll take care of it, I’m sure I can do it. Please don’t attempt to change my mind because I won’t budge.” I said, with a newly-found resolve etched in my mind.

I had to put an end to whatever the issue was between Roman and I.

If he didn’t want to tell me about my offense, I would pry it out of his mouth.

Even if he decided to come home in the middle of the night, I would wait up for him to settle it once and for all, and if my attempt at reconcilation failed, I’d get out of his life just like I had planned without a word.

The heavens would surely know I tried my best.

Katie stared at me like I had gone mad. “Are you sure about that? Can you really take care of it?”

“One thousand percent sure. I can do it, the rest of our classes for today have been cancelled, right?”

“Yeah.”

“Cool, I’ll see you tomorrow then. Take care.” I rapped out in a breath as I hooped my bag around my shoulder.

“Ba-”

“Also, please help me with my food tray. Bye.” I patted her shoulder before making my way out of the cafeteria.

To my utter relief, I spotted an empty taxi as soon as I reached the bus stop and got into it after telling the driver my destination.

We soon got to Roman’s estate and I paid the driver before alighting from the taxi.

Afterward, I headed into the house, took a nice, cold shower and flung on a pair of sweatpants and a sweatshirt.

Then, I headed into the kitchen and quietly watched Melissa and the maids prepare dinner.

When they were done, they served me and they all retired for the day to their respective quarters except for Melissa.

“Madam Sofie, aren’t you going to sleep? It’s quite late already.” She said, to which I smiled.

“Yeah, I know. You should head over to your quarters, I will take care of Roman’s meal when he gets back.”

She looked at me in shock as if I had just stabbed her in the stomach, “What? No, I can’t allow you do that. The young master won’t like it.”

“Don’t worry about that, Melissa. I said it’s fine.” I said.

She remained quiet, clearly hesitating on whether to listen to me or not.

“Very well then, madam. I’ll be off to my quarters but please do let me know if you need anything.” She said.

I nodded. “Sure, Melissa. Good night.”

“Have a goodnight too, ma.” She bowed, before leaving.Exclusive content © by Nô(v)el/Dr/ama.Org.

Soon enough, I heard the sound of Roman’s car horning and my heart lurched with immediate trepidation.

My hands became clammy with anxiety as he strode into the house with a plain expression.

Our gazes locked and he scowled, I knew I had to say something before he walked past me but my mouth only opened and closed noiselessly like a fish out of water.

I then decided to clear my throat to gain his attention, and thankfully, that worked as he stilled in his steps.

“Roman, w-we need to talk. About us, about whatever is going on with you. I do-”

“There’s nothing we need to talk about, Sofie. You can clearly see how tired I am, I need to sleep.” He said coldly and made to continue walking.

“You keep saying that but I know something is wrong. I don’t know what I might have done to you that caused this sourness and I really want to know. I can’t sleep well at night because of this, Roman.”

“You really don’t know, huh?” He scoffed as he turned around, training a snicker on me.

“I don’t. I really don’t.” I sniffled, and his scowl faltered for a split second before it returned again.

“You lied to me, Sofie. There are a lot of mistakes I can accept from you but I can never accept you lying to me. You had the effrontery to lie to my fucking face, Sofie, yet you still claim you don’t know what you did wrong, huh?” He gritted out.

I felt my knees weaken in panic as his eyes darkened and he started advancing toward me.

What was he going to do now? Would he physically assault me?

“I-I don’t know what you’re talking about, Roman.” I stuttered, with tears running down my face.

“Okay, since you’ve decided to play dumb, I’ll remind you. Why were you in a confectionery shop with Damien on the day you lied and cancelled our date?” He thundered, and shivers raced through my spine as I held onto the dining table.

He knew. He fucking knew!

What do I say? Should I come clean and tell him about my pregnancy?

“I-I can explain, p-please c-”

“I don’t need your damn explanation, Sofie! Just answer the fucking question!”

“I-I’m sorry but I can’t tell you why I met with him. But I can assure you that it’s not what you’re thinking.” I cried, which made him stop moving.

He burst into a peal of mirthless laughter and shook his head, “You can’t tell me, I see. Now I know the kind of a gold digging whore that you are! You disgust me, Sofie and I curse the day I met you!”

I shook my head fervently as I clung onto his arm for dear life, “No, that’s not it. Please believe me, I’m not cheating on you with Damien. I will never do that to you, j-”

“Get the fuck away from me, Sofie.”

“No, I can’t. I’m s-”

“Let go of me, you fucking bitch!” He barked, and flung me to the tiled floor.

My hands instinctively flew to my stomach as I mulled over the fact that Roman had just called me a bitch.

“Such a fucking waste of space.” He muttered before storming out of the dining room.

As I hugged myself tightly, and wept bitterly, one thing dawned on me;

I was doomed.
