MISTAKE 242
Chapter 242: A plot
Hazel strode back to the office to her desk, her face still flushed and lips pressed into a thin line. The vicious gossip she'd overheard in the bathroom had lit a fire within her. As she sat down at her desk, awards and accomplishments covering the walls around her, Hazel found herself pondering darkly on how to deal with this situation.
She didn't have long to think before her editor, Mrs. Levi, stuck her head through the door. " Hazel, can you come to my office for a moment? Bring your current project files."
With a sigh, Hazel gathered up the stack of papers and followed Mrs. Levi down the hall. When she entered the small office, she was dismayed to see her office rival, Lucy Gruiel, already seated smugly before Mrs. Levi's desk.
"Have a seat, Hazel," Mrs. Levi said in a no-nonsense tone, gesturing to the empty chair. Once Hazel had settled in, Mrs. Levi fixed her with a stern look. "I've been instructed to reassign. your current workload to Lucy, effective immediately."
Hazel's mouth dropped open in shock. "W-What? But I'm almost done with the Kingsley exposé! You can't just hand that off to someone else."
"I'm afraid I can," Mrs. Levi replied flatly. "This comes direct from the top. You are being reassigned to Mr. Reeds' team. He needs you to join his team for an important assignment this evening."
The hairs on the back of Hazel's neck stood up as the rumor from the bathroom came flooding back. This had to be what those gossiping girls were talking about; some shady "assignment"
that Mr. Reeds wanted her for.
Hazel shook her head vehemently. "No, absolutely not. I'm not just handing over my work to Lucy." She shot a disdainful glare at her smirking colleague. "And I refuse to go on any assignment' with Mr. Reed."
Mrs. Levi's expression turned stony. "I'm afraid you don't have a choice, Hazel. This is an order directly from the top. I heard Mr Reeds specifically requested you for this..."
"For what, exactly?" Hazel challenged, leaning forward. "So he can peddle me off to some rich investor? Use me as a prop for whatever sick fantasies he's into? Mrs. Levi are you saying you do not know the rumors about him?"Material © NôvelDrama.Org.
Mrs. Levi looked taken aback for a moment before recovering. “Don't be ridiculous, Hazel. Whatever concerns you may have, I can assure you this is strictly professional. Besides, you can't accuse someone without evidence!"
"Evidence? The entire office knows. Are you all going to gather and mock me after I have come back too? Is this how this company does business?" "Enough!" Mrs. Levi slammed her palm on the desk, cutting-Hazel' off. She fixed her with a
prating stare. "You'll do as you're instructed or I'll have you dismissed on insubordination. Are we clear?"
Hazel felt her heartbeat pounding in her ears as her eyes flicked over to Lucy, who was watching the exchange with undisguised glee. Clearly, she was relishing Hazel's predicament.
"Well?" Mrs. Levi pressed impatiently. "I need your project files handed over to Lucy right
now."
With a loud huff of frustration, Hazel shoved the stack of papers across the desk toward Lucy, who eagerly snatched them up. As Lucy smirked at her in victory, Hazel could have slapped the look right off the other woman's smug face.
"And Mr. Reed's team will inform you on your assignment. Help out an adventure back to finish your projects," Mrs. Levi added firmly. "Any more objections?"
Hazel opened her mouth, ready to let loose a torrent of curses about where Reeds could shove his "assignment". But something stopped her. Her frustration had reached a new level she had not experienced in a long while. The last time she was this frustrated, she had beaten up Mike and Jenny's mother.
No...no objections," Hazel said with a cold smile. She rose abruptly from her chair. "If you'll excuse me, I have preparations to make."
She stormed out of the office, fists clenched at her sides. First, she needed to find out exactly who those gossiping harpies in the bathroom were. With any luck, the building's security cameras would have footage of them.
First, she needed to identify those gossiping harpies from the bathroom. Hazel marched to the security room and flashed her press badge. "I need footage from the third floor hallway outside the west restrooms around 1:25 this afternoon."
The guard eyed her suspiciously. "We can't just hand out security videos without cause,
ma'am."
"But I need to see who those girls were!" Hazel pleaded. "They were there when I lost it, maybe they picked it up for me and put it somewhere. I need it for work"
The guard shook his head. "Still need proper authorization for that. Company policy."
Hazel felt her temper flaring but forced herself to remain calm. "Please, I'm begging you. I...I dropped something very valuable on my way to the bathroom. If I don't or get it, I am as good as fired. I'm afraid someone might have picked it up. That's why I need the footage, to see if I can identify a possible thief."
The guard's expression softened slightly at the lie. "All right, let me check that timeframe." He pulled up the video log and quickly found the right sequence, the trio of girls entering the
restroom.
"There, you see?" Hazel said quickly. "I just need to get their faces so I can find their names.
Later, I can follow up. Please, I'm desperate here
With a sigh and a shrug, the guard made a copy of the video file. "Fine, but this is a one-time thing, understand? Any more requests like this, you'll need to go through all the official channels."
"Of course, of course," Hazel agreed quickly, thanking him profusely as she took the video and hurried out.
Her next stop was the HR department to identify the three rumor-mongers by name. But Hazel had another motive too - to beg and plead her way into obtaining copies of their personnel files and contact information.
"I'm so sorry to bother you," she said breathlessly as she approached the HR manager's assistant. "But I really need your help with an urgent personal matter."
Over the next fifteen minutes, Hazel spun an increasingly embellished tale about the “valuable family heirloom" she had lost — a ring, a necklace, it kept changing - and how terribly important it was for her to track it down. She prayed the desperation leaked into her voice was convincing enough. Finally, the assistant took pity and made copies of the three girls' files which included names, photos to match the video, and listed their addresses and phone numbers. Hazel nearly wept with relief as she accepted the paperwork.
"Thank you, truly! You've been a wonderful help," Hazel gushed, heading straight for the door before the assistant could realize her ruse.
As she settled back at her desk, Hazel felt a surge of adrenaline and determination. She pulled up the video file and quickly matched the faces to the IDs from HR - Amber Westbrook, Gina Martino, and Carly Spencer. This vile trio would soon understand the severe consequences for their actions.
First, though, Hazel intended to let them rest for a while. After a good rest, she will teach them a lesson. Since they like destroying reputations and derailing careers through poisonous. lies and gossip, she was going to show them the other end of the stick. She was going to make all three of them and this entire company famous.
As for this mysterious "assignment" from Mr. Reeds, Hazel's instincts said she couldn't simply refuse. No, did not want to refuse. She would have to play along, at least for now. Let Reeds think he had led her into whatever sordid trap he was setting.
Because one thing was for certain; Hazel knew in her bones that tonight will end with blood. She was itching to see the faces of the idiots who thought she was for sale. She was going to brake a few bones if necessary.
When the demons realized the evil spirit they had provoked, and awoken from her slumber, they would be gasping for breath. Because for the first time in her life, Hazel felt she might really kill someone tonight if she was not careful
