CHAPTER 50: ALL FOR PRETEND

LILY’S POV:

“Go take a shower and get some sleep… it’s late”, Nikolai said to me once we were inside his room, he was back to his cold self. It makes me wonder if he’s bipolar, one minute he’s sweet and kissing me deep, the next minute it’s like I don’t even exist.

“Why did you lie about my parents job?”, I asked, the least he could do for me was to give me any form of explanation, I deserve that much.

“I don’t need to tell you why I do things”, He replied tiredly as he unbuttoned his shirt, he didn’t look at me while he spoke.

“Yes you do. You just lied about what my parents do for a living and now you’re saying you won’t tell me why?”, I asked again.

He sighed and turned around to look at me, half his shirt button was undone, leaving his hard chest on display, I gulped and tried to focus on his face.

“I don’t want my family investigating your background, I know them too well… My mother, Anastasia and Roman will go digging deep into your background and once they find out your father is a cop, what do you think they will do?”, He said, taking delayed steps towards me.

He was right, I hate to admit it.

The Vladimir family is a crazy family, I know they are all generations of mafia and underworld leaders, if they were to know my papa was a detective and was even investigating Nikolai and planning to bring their family to jail, they’ll have my head.

“But–“.

“Just play along, nothing is real here, it’s like the game of pretend”, Nikolai cut me off. I was about asking him about the kiss and he just cleared my doubt, it was all fake – his soft and reassuring smile, the kiss, him defending me – all unreal.

“Sure. Pretend”, I scoffed and said quietly.

He looked at me for two more seconds before turning away and then he said, “I will be having my shower in the guest room, but I will be sleeping here… with you”, and I blushed. He left the room before I could argue again.

I sighed and closed my eyes, taking in the events of today and what will happen in the coming days. I can’t even imagine sleeping in the same room, on the same bed as Nikolai, being that close to him will definitely make me have sleepless night.

I took a warm shower and got changed into my pajamas, just when I came back to the room, Nikolai entered the room and I was impressed. His hair was slicked back, showing off his strong face, water droplets shone on his skin, making his muscles look even bigger.

He has broad shoulders and a strong chest, making him look very powerful. Even though he was fresh out of the shower, he still seemed like a boss, like someone who’s in charge.

“Uhh…”, I tried to speak but nothing came out.

His eyes looked deep into mine, like he was daring me to look away. I felt a shiver down my spine as he walked towards me with a confident stride. Nikolai has a strong presence, like a magnet that draws you in. I felt amazed and a little intimidated by him, like he’s a force to be reckoned with.

“Wha-what are you doing?”, I asked as he walked towards me, I walked backwards and my heart was beating fast.

“You were staring at me, I thought you needed a closer look…”, He said and my eyes grew wider, I moved backwards faster till my back hit the wall and I gasped.

Nikolai caught up to me with a smirk on his face, he just stared at me, his eyes staring right into my soul.

“I-I thought you said a-all these are just for pretend?”, I managed to ask without quivering away.

“We are all alone, can you stop pretending?”, I said to him even though I didn’t want this feeling to stop. His smile deepen and he was really close to me, I gulped. He moved his face to mine and I closed my eyes in reflex.

‘Will he kiss me again?’, I asked myself. My eyes were closed and waiting for the kiss but nothing happened, I slowly opened my eyes after seconds passed and Nikolai was nowhere near me.

“Go to bed, it’s late”, I heard him say from the closet and I pouted, I was longing for that his heart racing kiss. I sighed and hopped in bed and covered myself with the blanket.

Nikolai finished dressing and came out of the closet, I quickly closed my eyes pretending to be asleep. I didn’t feel the side of the bed deepen, next I heard the door open. He left the room.

I was disappointed but also glad.

“It’s for the best”, I murmured and tried to fall asleep.

It was the morning of the next day, I touched the side of the bed but Nikolai wasn’t there, but the bedsheets were rumpled and it was still… warm.

That means he slept here, I smiled to myself and happily got up, it was 6am.

I wanted to help prepare breakfast, I took my bathe and wore a pair of jeans and knitted sweater, it was December so it was really cold.

My hair has always been my most praised asset, it was jet black, soft and really long. I put my hair in a high ponytail and wrapped it in a bun.

I left the room to go downstairs to the kitchen, I saw Anastasia coming my way.

‘Oh Lord, not now’, I silently prayed, I was not ready for her shenanigans. I decided to just walk past her and that was what I did, I walked by her without even looking at her but she grabbed my hand and I immediately yanked my hand from her grip.

“What is it?”, I asked her.

“You seriously don’t know how to greet?”, She said and I rolled my eyes.

“Good morning Anastasia”, I said and tried walking away but she stopped me yet again, standing in my way.

“What now?!”, I was starting to get irritated, she looked at me and scoffed.

“I really don’t like you… I just thought to let you know”, She said and I smiled, then I laughed like she just said something funny. She had a confused look on her face.

‘Is this girl for real?’, I asked myself.

“What’s funny?”, She asked.

“You”, I answered in one word and she had a scowl on her face.

“And how am I funny?”.

“The fact that you think your opinion about me matters… I don’t care if you like me or not”, I said and her mouth was left in an ‘O’ manner. I smiled at her and left her in her shocked state.

I was happy I just showed her I was not an easy and soft girl they could push around, I can be tough when needed and I will be ready for her if she tries anything.
