Chapter 209
Chapter 209
Dennis examined Marie with her head lowered as she was quietly thinking deeply. Gone was the
determined
expression she showed at the stronghold.
Amidst the stalemate and silence, Dennis suddenly opened his mouth. His hoarse voice was
surprisingly
pleasant in the night.
He said, “I just proposed to you, and you’re going to run away from the marriage?”
Drawing circles with the tip of her leg, Marie raised her head and looked at Dennis in a daze. She
blurted out,
“What?”
Dennis stared into her eyes with a serious expression and said, “I’m only injured, not crippled. I can live
a long
life. Why are you running?”
Cullen could not help but stifle a laugh. Dennis turned to look at him, and Cullen immediately shut his
mouth,
Marie still did not understand. Her mind was in a mess, thinking, “Isn’t Dennis here to catch me? Why
did he bring so many people with him?”
Dennis felt helpless as the girl stood before him with a dazed look. He could not help but suspect there
might
really be two of them. One was the murderous side shown at the stronghold, while the other was soft
and
meek, like a kitten.
He sighed, stretched out his hand, and said, “Come on, Marie. We’re going home.”
Marie sniffled, rubbed her eyes, and asked, “Don’t you blame me anymore?”
Dennis looked at her and answered, “I do, but we still have a long life ahead. You can’t just run away
from
home because I blamed you once.”
Suddenly, she turned to look at Kate and Luca. Marie reached out and pinched Luca’s hand, causing
the latter
to scream miserably and curse, “Are you crazy?” This content provided by N(o)velDrama].[Org.
Marie laughed. “I’m not dreaming!”
She turned to Kate and said, “Kate! I’m not dreaming! He’s here to pick me up!”
Kate nodded and said, “Stop embarrassing yourself!”
Ignoring the injuries on her body, Marie skipped toward Dennis with bright eyes and asked, “Are you
not angry
anymore?”
Dennis tidied up her messy hair and pulled her into his arms. He hugged her tightly as if trying to melt
her into his own body.
His hoarse voice rang in her ears, “I’m very angry because you never listen to me.”
Marie pushed him and got out of his arms. She lowered her head and said, “Stop hugging me. I stink.”
Dennis leaned over and sniffed, nodding, “Yeah, you do stink.”
Marie was speechless.

Dennis caught a glimpse of the bloodstains on her face and body. He held out his hand and caressed
her
dirty little face, asking, “Does it hurt?”
The will she had held on for so many days collapsed all of a sudden. Marie was originally strong-willed
to a
terrifying degree, but she could barely hold on any longer after Dennis touched her bruises with his
calloused
fingers, caring for her tenderly.
Her eyes turned red instantly as blood rushed to her face. Tears pattered down her face as she
whimpered pitifully, “It hurts. It hurts so much…”
Marie threw a delicate tantrum in broad daylight as a dozen spectators gathered around them. Dennis
patiently coaxed and hugged her as if she was a child. He patted her on the back, and consoled, “It’s
okay
now. You’re a good girl, Marie. Let’s go back and stop crying.”
Marie sniffled. “I-I’m exhausted. I haven’t slept for days, and I want to eat fish. I carried you on my back
and
walked for so long. You’re heavy…”
It seemed like she was letting out all the pent-up uneasiness and grievances she had felt for the past
few
days. She usually did not cry easily but could not stop tearing now. She buried her face in Dennis’ arms
and
cried solemnly. Her words were incoherent as she spoke of whatever she thought of at the moment.
On the other hand, Dennis maintained a nice temper as he coaxed and talked to her, told her she could
have
fish when she returned, and told her to rest well. From now on, he could carry her for half a mile
without
problems.
With tears on her face, Marie asked, “Will you still drive me away?”
Dennis shook his head. “Where would you go? We should just cuff ourselves together.”
“T-Then, why did you bring so many people here?” Marie asked.
Dennis looked at Emory and the others behind Marie and threatened, “If they don’t let you go back with
me, I’ll
have to be disagreeable.”
Emory, Luca, and Kate were at a loss for words.
The three adamant about saving lives showed an upset look, “Who did we offend? Why are all of them
so
unpleasant?”
Marie sniffled and sobbed. “Don’t hurt them. They’re not bad people.”
Dennis looked at Marie and said, “We still have much to discuss. You seem to have a lot to tell me.”
Marie lowered her head and nodded silently. Dennis coughed a few times and could not get up.
Marie was so frightened she even forgot to wipe her tears. She held him and asked, “What’s wrong?”
Cullen walked over and informed, “Ms. Spence, the president’s injuries have not healed yet. If he
continues to
stand like this, his body won’t be able to endure it.”
Stunned, Marie urged, “Then, hurry up and get in the car! Let’s go back to Gavin!”

Cullen and Marie helped Dennis into the car and turned to look at Emory and the others. Kate waved at
her
with a smile and said, “Be careful.”
Tears rolled down Marie’s cheeks again. She nodded and was about to wave her hand when Luca
hopped,
saying, “I have to go back and be a bodyguard!”
Emory glanced at him and said disdainfully, “A top assassin as a bodyguard? Aren’t you
embarrassed?”
Luca pursed his lips and said, “Am I an ordinary bodyguard? I’ll be Mrs. Whitney’s bodyguard soon!”
Emory was speechless.
“So? You’re still a bodyguard! Is that an honor?” He scoffed inwardly.
Emory and Kate got into the car and sped off. After Marie and the others were ready, they drove back.
Marie looked at Dennis nervously, fearing he had sustained a more severe injury but refused to say
anything.
Dennis smiled and said, “I’m okay. Don’t worry.”
Marie glared at him and warned, “If you kick me out again next time, I’ll really leave you behind! Let’s
see
who’s going to carry you!”
Dennis smiled and said, “You can’t bear to leave me.”
She peeked at Dennis and asked, “Do you remember I carried you on my back?”
Dennis nodded and leaned over to kiss her forehead, saying, “I remember.”
The corners of her mouth curved up, and she felt content.
Dennis added, “I remember you said you let me marry you after getting out of the woods.”
Marie was speechless.
He continued, “You said you’ll drag me out on the streets to parade me if I don’t marry you.”
Marie was at a loss for words.
“By the way, you said you’ll tell me everything I want to know as long as I wake up.”
Marie remained quiet.
“You said you loved me twice.”
Her silence continued.
…Marie almost wanted to cover her face now, thinking, “I wasn’t thinking much when I spoke at that
critical
moment. I couldn’t care much back then. Besides, didn’t Dennis pass out by then? He should be
unconscious,
sp why did he remember these things?”
She wished she could dig a hole and hide in it, but she was in a car, far from the ground.
Dennis suddenly spoke, “Marie, I love you too.”

Stunned, Marie turned her head to look at Dennis, who stared into her eyes as he said word by word, “I
love
you more than you can imagine.”
Cullen sat in the front seat and coughed awkwardly, thinking, “Mr. Whitney is really good at flirting! He’s
been
spouting romantic words from the moment he saw her.”
All of a sudden, Marie’s face turned red. She buried her face into Dennis’ knees and stayed silent.
Dennis
stroked her hair gently as he patiently tidy up her messy hair.
Unknowingly, Marie fell asleep. She had not had a good sleep for a long time. Now that everything was
settled, and most importantly, Dennis was by her side. She could relax entirely and fell into a deep
sleep.
Back at the base, Dennis insisted on carrying her back to the clinic. After finding Marie, Gavin noticed
how happy Dennis was and remarked, “Did you get the beauty?”
Dennis smirked and answered, “I did, but my wounds hurt.”
Gavin was speechless.
