Chapter 189
Chapter 189
What kind of man did her foolish mother married to?
This man was hypocritical, selfish, and useless, while her elegant-looking mother wasted her entire life
on
him.
If only someone had questioned Mia’s past and the blood relations of these three children, perhaps her
mother wouldn’t have ended up with depression.
Dennis held her in his arms and patted her back gently. “Marie, it’s all in the past.”
Still sobbing, she agreed, “Yes, it’s in the past.”
“How to you plan to deal with them?” Dennis asked.
Marie tidied up the documents on the table but did not take them along with her. “I can’t do anything to
them. Gavin said that Grandpa can’t handle any more shocks. I don’t want to hurt him.”
Dennis understood her thoughts and nodded. “Just leave these things here and come back to take
them when you need them.”
She hugged Dennis and thanked him.
Dennis stroked her long hair. “Silly girl, what are you thanking me for?”
Marie wiped away her tears. “I have to go back now. I promised Grandpa that I would be back soon.”
Dennis nodded. “Go ahead. Be careful on your way back.”
Marie picked up her bag and called Luca. They left Glorious Estate and returned to the Spence
mansion.
As Marie entered the room, she noticed Asher sitting on the sofa, his neck extended as he gazed out
the window. When his eyes met hers upon her return, he squinted and broke into a warm smile. The
sight tugged at Marie’s heart, for in that moment, Asher had transformed into a genuine elderly figure
who was eagerly anticipating the visits of his children.
Marie rushed in. Her smile widening as she exclaimed, “Grandpa! I’m back!”
Asher nodded. “You’re back. Let’s have a meal. Are you hungry?”
Marie helped Asher walk towards the dining room and nodded vigorously, “I’m starving. Let’s eat!”
Asher was overjoyed. “Great! Let’s eat!”
As they sat on their seats, Asher suddenly suggested, “Marie, why don’t you call Dennis over for a
meal
tomorrow?”
Marie was stunned for a moment. “Sure, Grandpa. I’ll do as you wish.”
She hesitated to impose the weight of her family’s expectations and lineage onto Dennis. Her priority
was to shield him from any potential harm. However, as she saw Asher with his back slightly hunched
and a sincere smile gracing his face while discussing the idea, she found herself unable to resist his
earnest request.

At that moment, she just wanted to make Asher happy. And as long as he was happy by her side, she
was
willing to do anything.
After dinner, Marie took Asher out for a stroll. Asher soon grew tired and they returned home to rest.
Meanwhile, at Glorious Estate.
Sitting behind the desk, Dennis tapped his fingers on the table. “How did the investigation on Seth and
Rose
go?”
Cullen replied in excitement, “Mr. Whitney, you’re right! Seth definitely has an underground network of
influence! There are shady dealings within the Rodger Group as well. But he has managed to escape
from the
radar too many times. Following your instructions, Clayton has also conducted some investigation.
There are some rumors in France that Seth was closely connected to various powerful figures. Some
even said that he
has his own private mercenary force and military base.”
Frowning, Dennis realized that the information they had gathered was mostly speculative and lacked
substantial evidence. The more he thought about it, the more agitated he became. He spoke with a
cold
expression, “Have Clayton expedite the investigation immediately! Whether Seth has a mercenary
force or
assassin, I want to see concrete evidence! I want solid proof!”
“Yes!” Cullen immediately left to attend to the task. Recently, Dennis has focused all his attention on
this
matter, putting aside all other work. Even Cullen couldn’t help but wonder if Marie was indeed involved
in
something problematic. Otherwise, why would Dennis be so persistent in investing so much manpower
and
resources into the investigation?
The next day.
Asher had requested the kitchen to prepare a sumptuous meal because Dennis was coming over for
dinner.
When Marie called Dennis to invite him for dinner, he immediately agreed.
Dennis arrived at Cloudy Villa a little past four in the afternoon. As soon as he parked the car and
stepped
out, Marie was already waiting for him at the entrance.
“Marie, why did you come out?” Dennis walked over and asked.
Marie scratched her head. “I’m here to pick you up. Sorry for asking you to enter from a different
entrance. I
just don’t want to bump into the people over at Mia’s side and let them cause trouble and upset
Grandpa.”
Dennis smiled. “It’s all right, any entrance is fine.”
She led Dennis in before saying, “Grandpa insisted to invite you over for dinner. If he says anything Text © owned by NôvelDrama.Org.
Inappropriate, don’t take it to heart. Just help me to keep him happy.”
Dennis raised his eyebrows and looked at her. “What kind of inappropriate things could be said?”
Before Marie could answer, Asher walked out and was delighted to see Dennis. He greeted him with a
smile. Dennis, you’re here so early!”
Dennis nodded slightly at Asher. “I finished my work early so I decided to come over early. I didn’t want
to keep you waiting.”

Asher’s expression soured as he glanced at Marie. “Girl, why didn’t you let Dennis come inside? What
kind of
hosts are we to leave our guests waiting outside?”
Marie smiled. “We are coming in now.”
Marie dragged Dennis inside and went to cut some fruits for him. When she came back with the plate
of
fruits, Dennis was already playing chess with Asher.
Marie placed the fruit on the table and sat next to Asher to watch the two play. But as soon as she sat
down,
Asher chased her away, “Go away. You don’t understand a single thing. Don’t bother me.”
She pouted. “Let me watch! I’ll understand as I watch!”
Dennis called out to her, “Marie, come over here.”
Marie stood up and sat down beside Dennis. He explained a few rules to her and asked her to continue
the
game.
Marie picked up a chess piece and placed it on the board. Asher looked at her anxiously. “What are
you
doing?”
“Playing chess!” She stuck out her tongue.
Concerned for Dennis, Asher voiced his worry, “Dennis, if she keeps playing like this, you’re going to
end up
losing!”
But Dennis only smiled. “It doesn’t matter. I couldn’t win against you anyway, let Marie have some fun.”
Marie made a few more moves in the game but soon found it uninteresting. She grabbed two grapes
and
stood up. “I’ll go check on the food in the kitchen,”
“Hurry up and leave!” Asher chased her away with a hint of disdain.
Marie took another chess piece and placed it on the chessboard before running away with a smile. She
could
hear Asher’s playful scolding behind her, “Kiddo!”
Dennis picked up the chess piece and continued playing with Asher for a few more rounds before
placing it
down and admitting his defeat.
“If it weren’t for Marie, you might have not lost!”, said Asher with a tinge of regret in his voice.
Dennis shook his head. “I’ll lose eventually. It was just a matter of time.”
Asher laughed at Dennis’ remarks. Having played chess for so many years, he could certainly tell that
Dennis had considerable skill. If it weren’t for Marie, he would likely have a good chance of winning.
But he did not
care about winning or losing. He was more interested in making both Marie and Asher happy.
Such a broad-minded and courageous young man, rare indeed in these times.
The more Asher looked at Dennis, the more he was impressed with Dennis. Asher put down the chess
piece and asked, “Dennis, what are your plans for my granddaughter?”
Dennis smiled faintly. “As long as she is willing to marry me, I am ready to get married any time.”
Asher was taken aback by his straightforwardness. After all, he was the CEO of Whitney Group!
He could have married someone with princess-like status, yet, he chose Marie instead.
Marie, that girl, must have been incredibly fortunate to have ended up with someone like Dennis.
“Dennis, Marie is young and still a bit naive, but deep down, she has a good heart. She has suffered a
lot since young, please be patient with her. As I’m getting older, I won’t be able to watch over her
forever…” Asher
sighed.
“Old Mr. Spence, you’re still young. You have to take care of yourself and witness our wedding!”
replied
Dennis.
Asher waved his hand dismissively, a chuckle escaping his lips. “You’re a smart man, no need to
sugarcoat things like the rest. I’m well aware of my own condition. Who’s to say when I won’t be able to
keep going
anymore?”
Dennis held a chess piece in his hand and fell into deep silence. As Gavin had said, when a person
reaches a certain age, their health deteriorates rapidly. It was something that medication and surgery
couldn’t prevent. Everything they were doing or saying now was merely to bring comfort to their hearts.
