Chapter 988 A Calculated Move
Artemis was leaning against a willow tree by the artificial lake, lost in thought, when he suddenly heard footsteps behind him. Instinctively, he turned around to look.
In sight, a slender figure was approaching his way.
It was already dusk, and the afterglow of the sunset spilled from the sky, bathing the entire world in a blanket of colorful light.
He initially thought it was Bailey, but upon seeing the newcomer's face clearly, he instinctively furrowed his brows.
If it were someone else, he might have responded with a cold stare, directly chiding them to leave.
However, that woman was Blaze. She was capable of whisking Cameron away and stopping that guy from pestering his wife relentlessly.
Based on that alone, he would change his indifference toward her and treat her kindly.
“Ms. Blaze, did you need something from me?”
The other party didn't respond to him.
Upon closer inspection, one could see her eyes were vacant, staring blankly into the void ahead, her gaze unable to find any point of focus.
What's going on with her?
Sleepwalking?
Or is she hallucinating?
In a moment of distraction, the woman in his line of sight had already reached the edge of the lake.
Suddenly, she lost control of her emotions. “Kurt, don't touch me. Don't you dare touch me. I'd rather die than let you humiliate me again.”
After she finished speaking, she leaped forward, plunging into the lake with a splash.
It was clear that this woman couldn't swim. As soon as she hit the water, she began to struggle violently.
It was almost mealtime at that moment, and the housekeepers were all busy with their tasks, so there was hardly a soul to be seen by the artificial lake.
Artemis found himself in a dilemma—should he jump into the lake to save her or not?
Cameron was poisoned in the process of saving Bailey. To remove the poison from Cameron's body, Blaze was willing to sacrifice herself, negotiate with Kurt, and end up being severely injured.
In the end, he and Bailey should bear the responsibility.
If he were to watch Blaze die today with his own eyes, even Bailey would never forgive him afterward, let alone Cameron.
After weighing the pros and cons, Artemis saw that the woman in the water had completely submerged. He dared not delay any longer and plunged straight into the water.
Eunice certainly knew how to swim, but she didn't show it.
She jumped into the lake just to force Artemis to come and rescue her. If she were to swim up by herself, then what was the point of all this fuss?
She knew that under normal circumstances, this man wouldn't let any woman other than Bailey get close to him. If she wanted to get closer to him, she knew she had to be cunning.
As she watched her entire body submerge into the water, the man on the shore remained indifferent. Despite her outward calm, she was in turmoil inside, debating whether or not to get herself out. C0pyright © 2024 Nôv)(elDrama.Org.
After choking on several mouthfuls of lake water, she even began to muster her strength, ready to break through the surface.
Before she could make a move, a sound echoed in her ears, followed by a massive splash exploding around her.
Her vision was blurry, but she could still make out a slender figure swiftly swimming toward her.
When she arrived at the artificial lake, she carefully observed her surroundings. There was no one around.
She figured the one who could dive in such a short time must be Artemis.
He had come to rescue her.
The man she had admired for many years had really come to rescue her.
A tremendous joy filled Eunice's entire being, so much so that she didn't even bother to pretend she couldn't swim anymore. Instead, she used the buoyancy to propel herself forward.
“Cameron, save me. Save me.”
As she cried, she threw herself into Artemis' arms.
A shadowy glint flashed in Artemis' eyes as he instinctively wanted to shake her off.
Yet, when he saw her talking while choking on water, her eyes rolling back in her head, he couldn't help but curse. Then, wrapping his arm around her waist, he shot out of the lake.
As the air rushed into her respiratory system, it gradually relieved the oppressive feeling in her abdomen.
Eunice was contemplating whether she should faint on the spot, forcing this man to give her mouth-to- mouth resuscitation.
But on second thought, she dismissed the idea.
Artemis was notoriously cold and ruthless, with a restrained and indifferent demeanor. He reserved all his tenderness only for Bailey.
Perhaps he might save her out of respect for Cameron, but he would never engage in intimate acts with her.
If she were to faint now, she wouldn't be able to carry out the rest of her plan. Furthermore, all the troubles she went through today would have been for nothing.
Rather than that, she reckoned it was better for her to pretend that he was Cameron and...
With that thought in mind, she suddenly reached out, wrapped her arms around his neck, and clung to him like an octopus.
“Cameron, I knew you would come to save me,” she cried, “I feel so terrible. Utterly terrible.”
After speaking, she leaned in, her lips drawing closer to his.
Artemis' face darkened, and immediately, his body temperature seemed to drop a few degrees.
“Ms. Blaze, please respect yourself.”
After he finished speaking, he placed his hand on her shoulder, forcing her to lean back a few centimeters.
“If you're still not awake, I don't mind dunking you back in the water to clear your head.”
See!
This is Artemis, no doubt.
There's no hint of pity in his eyes. Even the tone of his voice is so indifferent.
She finally understood why so many women considered Bailey their sworn enemy.
Simply by monopolizing this perfect and powerful man all to herself, she was enough to max out everyone's envy.
“M-Mr. Luther, yes, I'm sorry/ I don't know what came over me just now. I-I didn't do anything inappropriate, did I?”
Artemis didn't want to waste time talking to her. With one hand, he grabbed her arm, and with the other, he started swimming toward the shore.
Eunice couldn't bear to leave his embrace or be away from his scent, but she couldn't resist too much, either. She had more important things to do.
After Artemis pulled her ashore, he helped her lean against the tree trunk.
Just as he was about to stand up, the woman on the ground suddenly grabbed his arm, “Mr. Luther, please don't tell Cameron about my sleepwalking episode earlier. I'm afraid it will worry him.”
A flicker of impatience flashed across Artemis' brow. Just as he was about to lift his head to say something, his vision suddenly blurred.
Through the setting sun, it seemed as if he could see that delicate face etched deep into his soul.
“Bay...”
Listening to his loving tone, Eunice felt a smirk involuntarily creep onto her lips.
The stupefying drug she developed was so potent that, up until now, no one had been able to withstand its effects.
The deeper the love one felt, the stronger the effect of this enchanting potion became, making it easier for one to spiral down the rabbit hole, unable to control one's emotions.
Before she jumped into the water, she had smeared the stupefying drug all over her body. During their close contact earlier, Artemis had inhaled some of the drug. Hence, it was only natural for him to lose his senses.
That would never happen unless he didn't love Bailey or there wasn't a woman in his heart.
Otherwise, no matter who he loved, after inhaling the stupefying drug, the face of his beloved would appear.
Although it was quite unpleasant to be Bailey's stand-in, after that night, Eunice believed she would have the credentials to be on equal footing with that woman.
Even if Artemis wouldn't accept her in the end, there would be no possibility for him and Bailey anymore.
“Artemis, it's me. Do you love me?”
Artemis, as if possessed, reached out his hand and gently caressed her face. “Of course. In this life, I only love you.”
Eunice wrapped her arms around his neck, leaning in to whisper in his ear, “Artemis, the flower bed over there is so beautiful. Let's go there and make love.”
Artemis?
The domineering CEO furrowed his brows, and a glint of confusion flashed in his eyes.
