Chapter 11 Too Late
After a glance at the cab, he followed it on an electric scooter.
Meanwhile, not only had Walt booked the entire The Clouds, but he even invited almost all of their university friends.
To the public, it was a grand wedding for Heather, but privately, they all knew it was an alumni reunion.
Walt was dressed to his nines that day. The second he arrived, he became the center of attention.
The attention and flattery he received from the others inflated his ego.
“Heather’s here!”
“As expected of the most popular girl in university! She’s beautiful!”
Right then, Heather came in, walking down the red carpet.
She was wearing a red gown, and her intricate makeup made her beauty elevate to the next level.
Her alluring appearance left everyone, including Walt, spellbound.
The resentment in Walt grew when he thought about how the attractive woman chose Alex, the loser, over him.
While he was adjusting his tie, he kept his head low and sneered.
When he lifted his head again, a poised smile had replaced that sneer. He then walked over to Heather.
“Heather, you’re here! I’m happy to see you!” Walt exclaimed when he reached her.
“I make good on my promise, and I hope you’ll stick to your words, too,” Heather calmly told him.
“Heather, you still don’t have faith in me. I only want you to understand what’s on my mind by making that request. Why would I ever put you in a spot if you only wanted to borrow money?” Walt said before holding his arm up.
After a moment of hesitation, Heather hooked her arm around his.
Then, she continued her way down the red carpet with Walt as everyone stared at them.
Everybody was clapping their hands, but Heather was pale.
She could sense the mocking gazes of her old classmates.
Heather knew not whether that was Walt’s intention or not, but she knew that humiliation was all she could feel at that moment.
“Heather, how lucky you are. You were the perfect match for Mr. Wallace, and the two of you should have gotten together a long time ago. I never thought that…” one of the female classmates muttered in mock jealousy.
Walt put on an annoyed expression and said, “Hannah, what are you talking about? It isn’t too late for Heather to marry me now.”
“Of course, of course! It’s written in the stars for Heather to marry you now, Mr. Wallace,” another classmate chimed in.
Right then, Walt fished out a small ornate box and opened it to reveal a diamond ring.
“Heather, it’s not a grand ceremony today, but the love I have for you is genuine. Marry me. I will do everything I can in my life to make you the happiest woman in this world.”
Walt was on one knee as he lifted his head to look at Heather eagerly.
However, the look in Heather’s eyes was a dazed one. Staring at the supposedly sincere Walt reminded her of Alex.
Back then, the two of them had loved each other dearly. He once waited for her with such eagerness too.
She could not fathom why that had happened after their wedding.
Her heart suddenly ached. RêAd lat𝙚St chapters at Novel(D)ra/ma.Org Only
“Heather, would I have saved your brother if I was only trying to con you?” Walt quickly reminded her when he realized Heather was spacing out.
It was only then Heather snapped back to her senses.
The Jennings family needed Walt’s rescuing, and Walt had also saved her brother the night before.
It was too late for her to back down now.
Furthermore, it was pointless to think about her relationship with Alex anymore.
With that final thought in mind, Heather stopped hesitating. She reached out her hand to let Walt put on the diamond ring on her finger.
Thud!
Right then, someone kicked the door to the hall open.
When the people turned, they saw Alex walking into the room.
“Who’s that? I can’t believe he’s trying to wreak havoc at Mr. Wallace’s party. Does he have a death wish?”
“Isn’t that Alex, our class rep? What is he trying to do?”
“Don’t you know about this? Alex is Heather’s husband who was taken into Heather’s family,” someone who knew about Alex’s situation said.
“What? Our genius class rep became a live-in son-in-law?”
Those who had not heard about Alex’s situation were all stunned.
Then, they started laughing at him.
Unlike them, Heather’s face was completely colorless as a troubled look manifested on it.
“Why are you here?”
Heather’s voice was weak. It was as if she did not even have the strength to shout at Alex.
The sight of her gloominess broke Alex’s heart.
“Heather, why were you so foolish? How could you have believed in Walt? Have you forgotten what kind of person he was? He has invited every one of your classmates here. Do you still not understand? This is clearly a trap, and he’s out to take revenge on you!” Alex bellowed.
“Don’t listen to him, Heather. He’s talking nonsense. I invited them to witness our moment of happiness,” Walt slowly explained as he rose to his feet.
A shudder wracked Heather’s body. “Leave, Alex! Leave!”
Three words from her, and it was as if all her energy had been sapped from her.
Did she have a choice?
Regardless of whether Walt was sincere or not, a choice was not something she had.
If she wanted to borrow thirty million from Walt, she would have to grit her teeth and bear with it.
“Heather, don’t let a loser affect our merry moods. Come, let me put the ring on your finger.” With that, Walt grabbed Heather’s hand and put on the diamond ring for her.
Heather, are our relationship of five years and my efforts not enough for me to earn your trust?
All colors were drained from Alex’s face, and he could almost see the reflection of himself as a mess reflected in Heather’s indifferent eyes.
Right then, the server brought two glasses of wine.
Walt picked up a glass and passed it to Heather.
“Heather, drink this, and from now on, you’ll be the one I will protect with my life,” Walt uttered. Numbly, Heather drank the wine with him.
“Ugh—”
A metallic taste filled Alex’s throat before he spat out a mouthful of blood.
The rage had wreaked havoc in his body, and his injury from eight years ago was relapsing.
Heather’s heart skipped a beat. All of a sudden, she threw the glass away and dashed toward Alex.
“A-Alex… Alex, you…”
Heather’s heart was aching, and her tears were rolling down her cheeks uncontrollably.
She never thought Alex would vomit blood in his fury.
“I’m sorry, but I must do this…”
Heather’s heart was pounding loudly as her mind blanked out. She could feel nothing but crashing tides of sorrow in her.
“Heather, you don’t need to apologize. You’ve always hated how I was useless and unambitious. Now, I will let you know what kind of person I am.”
