Millie and Rachel’s phone chimed at the same time from a push notification.
“Jake Webson has issued a statement: I am the animal in the video. My apologies for taking up the attention. As a long–time admirer of Ms. Shaw, I lost control of myself and kissed her when I was drunk last night. I hereby apologize to Ms. Shaw, who was innocent in this incident.
“Ms. Shaw, as a woman, has more to lose in this scandal. I hope the public moves on from this scandal and restores her reputation.”
They both looked up, seemingly conflicted after reading Jake’s clarification.
Rachel was surprised at Jake’s willingness to shoulder the blame. In his statement, he never once criticized her. Not only that, he cleared her name and requested the public to move on from the scandal.
She lowered her gaze once more. Her lashes were trembling.
Jake called Millie at that time, and she put his call on speaker mode.
He sounded calm. “Let’s resolve the scandal in this way. Rachel, you don’t have to make any statement about it. I’ll handle any issue that arises later.”
“Mr. Webson…” Rachel muttered.
“It’s fine. I don’t have the best reputation anyway. The public can feel free to badmouth me. But I can’t let that happen to you, superstar,” he remarked flippantly.
Rachel fell silent.
“But I can’t let that happen to you, superstar.”
Her heart fluttered after hearing Jake’s words. He put an end to the debacle that unfolded because of
her mistake.
Feeling apologetic, she said, “Mr. Webson, I owe you one.”
“It’s not a problem at all. If you have nothing else to discuss, I’ll hang up now. Time to deal with the reporters at my door,” he said with a chuckle before hanging up.
Millie arched an eyebrow and made an impression of Jake, “But I can’t let that happen to you, superstar.”
Rachel wailed as she dashed toward the couch and flung herself onto it. Her heart was racing like
crazy.
“Why do I sense sparks flying?” Millie crouched beside Rachel, propping her face in her hands and looking curious. “Has Mr. Webson always been this responsible? I don’t recall.” Upstodatee from Novel(D)ra/m/a.O(r)g
Looking pensive, Millie recalled her impression of Jake–a useless jerk and a player. Why was he
doing all this for Rachel?
“Is he trying to cozy up to you so you would agree to an ambassadorship?” Millie stroked her chin and
deduced.
“No one will want my endorsement because of this scandal.” Sighing, Rachel said, “Fine. I’ll go on a
hiátus.”
She needed at least a month’s hiatus before she was ready to return. Hugging Millie, she wailed regretfully; “Mills, I swear I’ll never drink again.”
“You’ll learn and live.” Millie patted her on the head with a smile. “A month’s hiatus sounds good. Why don’t you join me for the cruise party?”
“What cruise party?”
“Haven’t you heard about it? It’s Yerwick’s annual cruise party. A lot of the wealthy people will show up. Anyway, it’s an obscenely opulent party of the rich.”
Pouting, Rachel asked, “Do I need to drink?”
Millie replied, “Yeah…” Maybe.
Rachel immediately gestured a “no“. Nope. Nada. She wouldn’t be going!
“What’s wrong with you? Are you traumatized after that scandal?” Millie tapped her on the head.
At the same time, she received a reminder from the hospital to show up for her shift. She rose from the couch and said, “Rach, I’ll need to leave for the hospital today.”
“Just leave! Don’t worry about me!” Rachel lay on the couch despondently.
“I’ll see you at night.” With that, Millie left for work.
