Chapter 138 Sarah Knows They’re Divorcing
“Mom, Dad, what brings you back so suddenly?” Nancy asked, her voice tinged with panic.
“We have some matters to attend to and thought we’d have lunch here. You and Nicholas, on the other hand, came back without saying anything. If we had known earlier, we would have asked the kitchen to prepare some of your favorite food,” Sarah stated.
Nancy smiled and replied, “No need to trouble yourselves, Mom. It was a sudden decision, but don’t worry, nothing significant happened. We’ll be leaving shortly, so we won’t stay for lunch.”
“It’s just one meal; it won’t take much time. You two wait here. I’ll have the kitchen prepare more food,” Sarah insisted and headed towards the kitchen.
“Mom…” Nancy immediately stopped her, saying, “It’s really not necessary. Nicholas and I have something important to attend to.”
With that, Nancy reached out and gently tugged at Nicholas’ hand.
Nicholas knew she was seeking help.
Under normal circumstances, he would gladly oblige, but this time, a selfish thought crossed his mind. If Mom finds out about our plan to divorce, she’ll help me keep Nancy, right? We won’t have to end our marriage. will we?
“Whatever it is you need to do, can’t it wait for an extra hour? Why the rush?” Sarah asked.
Nancy was never good at lying, so she smiled brilliantly, attempting to conceal her inner turmoil with her smile.
“Mom, they close at noon, so Nicholas and I thought it was best to get there in the morning.” Nancy smiled radiantly and spoke confidently, leaving no room for doubt.
Sarah sighed, and her mood plummeted. “Well, in that case, go ahead. I won’t keep you any longer.”
Approaching Nicholas, Nancy held his arm as they turned to leave. Suddenly, Albert called out, “Nancy…”
But as soon as he did, Sarah immediately grabbed his hand and shot him a stern look.
“Yes, Dad?” Nancy turned around.
Albert waved it off, his once-sturdy voice now sounding somewhat aged. “Nothing. I just wanted to say that you should come over more often for meals and visit us when you have time.”
“Alright,” Nancy replied, struggling with her words.
After saying that, her heart was filled with bitterness. She had lied this time. After the divorce, she would probably rarely visit this place. Other than to visit Jacob, she probably wouldn’t return.
As they watched Nancy and Nicholas gradually disappear into the distance, Sarah immediately turned
falling from her eyes.
“If you already guessed it, why didn’t you let me try to save their marriage?” Albert helped her to the couch, where she sat down.
Sarah wiped away her tears and choked out, “Didn’t you see Nancy’s attitude and expression? She’s made up her mind to get a divorce. Do you really think a few words from you could change that?”
As a woman, Sarah knew too well the meaning of such determination and devastation.
“Besides, even if we wanted to salvage the situation, it wouldn’t be you. It would be up to Nicholas. Perhaps it’s better if they separate. Let that boy learn a lesson the hard way. Just looking at him is infuriating. I really want to give him a good shake and knock some sense into him. Who does he think he is, not cherishing his wife and seeking other women?!”
Sarah was originally heartbroken, but when she thought about all that Nicholas had done in the past, her emotions turned to anger, and her anger only intensified in the end..
Albert could only console her on the side.
After a while, Sarah calmed down a bit.
Albert’s brows were still furrowed, and he found it hard to relax. “I’m afraid that once they’re apart, there might be no turning back.”

His remark touched Sarah deeply. She remained silent for a while before muttering heavily, “Then it’ll
up to his fate. If he realizes his mistakes and learns to cherish her, he will find a way to win back Nancy. If they truly miss the opportunity, it will be his own misfortune.”
With a heavy sigh, Sarah also lost her appetite and went upstairs. Content held by NôvelDrama.Org.
Despite what she had said, she was not willing to see them get divorced. Nancy was Jacob’s carefully chosen granddaughter-in-law, and before he passed away, he repeatedly urged them not to let the two of them divorce. If they truly ended their marriage now, how could Sarah face her father-in-law? Moreover, it wasn’t easy for them to become a married couple. If her son divorced and lost such a good life partner, how could she, as a mother, be happy?
However, Sarah also knew that Nancy had already made up her mind. The younger woman’s gaze and words were resolute, leaving no room for retreat. What could they, as parents, do if they tried to persuade her? It wouldn’t change anything; it might even distance Nancy from them. This was one of the reasons Sarah decided to play dumb.
Presently, Sarah picked up her phone and immediately called her secretary, asking her to come up with a reason related to the company to get Nicholas back to the office quickly.
“Son, this is the last thing your mother can do for you. I hope you’ll learn to cherish her in the future.”
After hanging up the phone, Sarah took a white pill from a pillbox, swallowed it with warm water, and then lay down for a nap.
After leaving the family home, Nancy checked the time on her phone and then looked at Nicholas. “There is still an hour left before the Town Hall closes. It’s a half-hour from here. That should be enough time. Let’s go.”
With that, Nancy continued to walk ahead.
Nicholas watched her retreating figure, feeling a myriad of emotions all at once, but not a sliver of it was happiness.
“Sweetie…” Nicholas suddenly called out to her.
“Yes?” Nancy turned around, facing the bright sunlight. Her gentle, sunny face seemed to be bathed in golden light, radiating warmth and beauty that held his gaze. For the rest of his life, even years later, Nicholas still remembered the tenderness and beauty she exuded at that moment.
“I’m sorry, but there’s an urgent matter at the company, and I might not be able to accompany you to the Town Hall anymore,” Nicholas said.
For the first time in his life, he had told such a significant lie, one full of holes and utterly unconvincing.
“Do you really need to rush back to the office right now? Can’t it wait an hour?” Nancy asked.
Nicholas looked at her apologetically. “Yes, it’s very urgent. I must return immediately.”
Nancy lowered her head for a moment and then raised it to ask, “How long will it take? Can you finish it before 4.00PM?”
If Nicholas could finish by 4.00PM, it would give them enough time to process the paperwork before
5.00PM.
Since Nicholas knew that it was a lie, he didn’t pay much attention to it and casually responded, “Perhaps, but I cannot be certain.”
“Alright then. You can proceed. The company’s affairs are significant. I will wait for you.”
“I might finish quite late. Are you certain you want to wait for me? I can arrange for someone to take
you
back first.”
“That’s fine. I don’t have any other commitments, after all. I will wait for you at your company while you attend to your business,” Nancy confirmed.
