Chapter 131 The Last Tenderness Before Parting Ways (1)

“Do you really want a divorce?” Nicholas stared at Nancy and asked, struggling to get the words out.

“Yes.”

Nancy’s reply was brief, but Nicholas could see the determination in her eyes. There was no trace of

hesitation.

He was in agony.

No words could describe the reluctance he felt, but did it even matter?

He had no right to keep her by his side.

“I’ll agree to the divorce on one condition.”

“What is it?”

“When you’ve recovered, come with me on a trip to Grandpa and Grandma’s hometown.”

Nancy nodded. “Alright. I’ll do it.”

In the following days, Nancy stayed home to recover. Nicholas hired several professionals to take care of her. One was in charge of her rehabilitation process, while another was a nutritionist who oversaw their daily meals. Peggy prepared the food based on the nutritionist’s diet plans.

Under such professional guidance, Nancy recovered quite quickly. Her cheeks started looking rosy again.

As for the baby, she and Nicholas seemed to be on the same page. Neither of them mentioned the baby again.

Everyone knew that it was a sensitive topic for both of them. Even the slightest mention would cause excruciating pain.

No one dared to bring it up.

When it came to certain wounds, it didn’t matter because even if they festered deep within one’s heart, one would still lack the courage to revisit them.

On the fifth day of her recovery, Nancy received a call from Evelyn Yancy.

“Are you back in the country, Mrs. Moore?” Finally, a trace of a smile returned to Nancy’s face.

“Nancy, I might need to stay here for a little longer. I won’t be back so soon. If you’re in a hurry, you can find someone else at the hospital to be your mentor.”

“Don’t worry, Mrs. Moore. Just focus on your exchange. I’ll wait for you to come back. I have some matters to attend to as well. so it won’t be a waste of my time either.”

She succeeded in casing Evelyn’s mind.

After ending the call, Nancy exhaled.

Following the awfulness of recent events, her life seemed to have taken a downward spiral into a pit of despair with nothing but darkness around her. However, fate wasn’t too cruel to her. A streak of sunlight had entered her dreary life. All text © NôvelD(r)a'ma.Org.

She should have joined the hospital a long time ago.

The hospital had assigned her a mentor, and when she saw the name, she was surprised. Her mentor was Evelyn.

Evelyn was also the wife of her postgraduate supervisor.

At the time, Nancy was pleased to find out that a professor would be mentoring her. Many of the other new interns were envious of her.

Later on, Nancy found out that her academic supervisor had pulled some strings to make the arrangement. She had been so touched that she teared up.”

Her academic supervisor simply patted her on the shoulder and encouraged her.

As a doctor, it was her responsibility to do what she could to save lives. Since she chose the profession, she would see it through to the end.

Luckily, her life was not completely hopeless.

Since Evelyn was going to return to the country a little later, Nancy could use this time to sort out her

emotions.

Once she began working, her life would start anew.

During this time, Nicholas spent most of his days out of the house, leaving early and only returning late at night. Nancy rarely saw him.

When she woke up in the morning, he had already left the house.

When he came back at night, she was already asleep.

Each night, when the house was quiet and Nancy was sound asleep, Nicholas would quietly enter her room and sit beside her.

Sometimes, he would stand and gaze at her longingly.

Sometimes, he would describe his day to her.

Of course, there were times when he simply looked at her in silence-as if he couldn’t get enough of the sight.

Before leaving, he would gently kiss her on the forehead.

Nicholas continued this routine for seven days.

However, on this particular night, he came home extremely late, and he reeked of alcohol as well

Worried that the smell would be uncomfortable for Nancy, he took a shower and changed into clean clothes before entering her room.

When he approached, Nancy was already asleep. The moonlight made her face appear even softer and more beautiful. It was hard not to be drawn to her.

Her eyes were closed. Her red lips were lightly pressed together.

However, if Nicholas looked closer, he would notice that her eyelashes were flickering slightly.

He walked barefoot and sat down on the floor beside Nancy’s bed.

After sitting there for a long time, he turned around and gazed longingly at her captivating face. “Honey, this might be the last time I call you that. There are 365 days in a year. After over two years, we’ve spent over 800 nights together. I had so many opportunities to call you honey, but I took them all for granted.”

“I know you won’t forgive me. I can’t forgive myself either.”

“Do you know why I want to take you to my grandparents’ hometown?”

“When they were still alive, they were a very loving couple. Even in my limited memory, Grandpa would always protect Grandma and cherish her. I really want to tell you that I want to take care of you the way Grandpa took care of Grandma. I have a selfish reason. I hope that after you see their old home, you’ll reconsider our marriage and give me another chance.”

“But… I only dare to say these things to you in secret when you’re asleep.”

Alas, even the proud and seemingly invincible Nicholas had his moments of weakness and cowardice.

100.

He never thought this would happen, but when the day-and the person-finally came along, he realized that nothing in life was impossible.

In the past, he had been too full of himself.

Before leaving, Nicholas leaned in to kiss Nancy on the forehead as he always did.

Staring at her face, he leaned down. However, just as his lips were about to touch her forehead, he had a change of heart.

His gaze fell upon Nancy’s red lips. Suddenly, he threw caution to the wind and kissed her lips.

They were soft and plush.

They were warm-just as he remembered. He got lost in the moment.

It was the last kiss. It could be his final chance. He wanted to be reckless just this once.

“I’m sorry, Nancy!”

Finally, Nicholas left after uttering those words.

As soon as he left, Nancy opened her eyes.

She hadn’t fallen asleep. She had sensed Nicholas’ presence the moment he entered.

She had only pretended to be asleep because she didn’t know how to face him.

After all the storms in their marriage, the relationship was beyond repair. When she married him, she risked it all, thinking that with enough time, they would develop feelings for each other. He would forget about the past and come to love her.

Yet now, she has come to a realization that time does not diminish love.

For some, love at first sight can be sparked by a single glance, just as it happened to her. However, for others like Nicholas, even a lifetime is not sufficient to ignite that feeling.

Their paths were not destined to intertwine.

The following morning, they prepared their belongings for a visit to Nicholas’ grandparents” hometown. This journey marked the end of their marriage.

The trip was scheduled to last three days. Once those three days were over, they would part ways without any remaining ties,
