Caleb rolled his eyes. “Why am I not good enough?”

But there was no time to argue with Alexander as Skylar had already walked out.

Caleb believed that he and Skylar were a match made in heaven. After all, relationships with older women were trending. And with his looks and physique, wasn’t he a snatch? He was the premium version of a cute boyfriend.

Once in the car, Caleb couldn’t stop talking. He chattered on and on, even mentioning Simona.

Simona had completely stepped out of the shadows in the past few years and became as sunny as she used to be. After starting university, she made many new friends, leaving Caleb behind

entirely.

Listening to Caleb’s chatter, Skylar couldn’t help but smile. “You’ve had quite an eventful three years.” All text © NôvelD(r)a'ma.Org.

“Of course! Recently, Grandpa even started to praise me. Give me a bit more time, and who knows, maybe I’ll be as impressive as you are,” Caleb said with a sense of pride.

To him, being as skilled as Skylar would be a huge achievement. Alexander would probably

brag about him everywhere.

But deep down, Caleb knew he could only say this. He was well aware of his abilities, and comparing himself to Skylar was practically self–sabotage.

Even Alexander admitted that Skylar’s restoration skills surpassed his own.

That kind of talent required not only innate ability but also tremendous hard work. Some people possessed the talent but lacked the effort.

As for Caleb, he had neither exceptional talent nor the drive to work as hard as needed. His words were more to cheer himself up, but he knew his own limits.

Skylar laughed at his words. “By the way, why did you suddenly decide to attend the charity gala?”

“It wasn’t really a sudden decision. Uncle John just left the country yesterday, and my dad is not back yet. My grandpa isn’t interested in these kinds of events, but since we received the invitation, someone had to attend.

“I’m just going to fill in, and maybe see if there’s anything interesting at the auction,” Caleb replied honestly.

“I see.” Skylar nodded in understanding.

Since she had no other plans, she might as well accompany Caleb to the event tomorrow.

As they chatted, they soon arrived at Hughes Residence,

On the way, she had spoken to Jeremy on the phone,

At that moment, Jeremy was there, where two family members were being held in detention awaiting a court hearing. Meanwhile, the others, supposedly influenced by a cursed object, were also present.

Thinking about what had happened with the Hughes family, she had a vague sense that there was some deeper connection. All of them seemed to be affected emotionally,

And there were two people who claimed to have no memory of what happened after they mistreated the young girl. She found this explanation questionable. So, Skylar decided it would be best to see for herself before drawing any conclusions.

“I know Zack and Quincey Hughes. They were three grades ahead of me, and we went to the same high school.

“Back then, they were pretty arrogant, often forcing younger girls to date them. If the girls refused, they would resort to all kinds of bullying, leaving their victims too scared to fight back or even speak up. They were jerks.

“As for their claim that they don’t remember hurting that little girl, I don’t buy it,” Caleb

remarked to Skylar as they drove.

Jipsburg might be big, but it was not that big–especially within certain circles.

Everyone in their social circle had crossed paths in some way, and they all knew each other.

Everyone knew about some people’s messy pasts, even if they weren’t openly discussed. That was part of why he wanted to accompany her.

When it came to the Hughes family, the only person he had any real respect for was Jeremy,

but not the rest.

Once they arrived at Hughes Residence and parked the car, a maid came forward to invite them

inside.
