Chapter 755
Joe wondered if Aiken truly had feelings for Skylar.
“No, I’ve just been swamped with work. It’s been a while since I last worked, and the workload these past few days has been overwhelming,” Skylar explained.
Joe’s lips pressed into a thin line. “Look at me when you speak.*
Joe pondered whether Skylar thought he hadn’t noticed.
Skylar lifted her gaze, locking eyes with Joe. His eyes seemed infinite, like an endless galaxy. At that moment, Skylar felt like she was just a tiny star within it. Her chest tightened as she countered, “Why would I be avoiding you?”
Joe fell silent, and they stared at each other for a long time.
Finally, Joe let it go, turning off the light. “Let’s sleep.”
Skylar nodded lightly, humming in response.
The next morning, Skylar and Joe had breakfast together before heading to work.
On her way, Skylar received a call from Alexander. He mentioned wanting to take her to an auction.
This particular auction featured numerous antiques brought back from abroad. They had all been professionally authenticated and were free of counterfeits.
Alexander warned Skylar over the phone that some of these items, due to their overseas origin, could contain disturbing or harmful elements.
The auction’s organizer, Orson Todd, was a friend of Alexander’s. He had shared that the seller of these antiquities was an elderly man. However, the elderly man didn’t leave any contact information, and Orson couldn’t
recall his appearance.
He pointed out that many older men have similar appearances, with their faces etched with wrinkles. The mask he was wearing made it even harder to distinguish him.
Skylar keyed in the location into her navigation system and headed to the auction.
Alexander was already waiting for her at the entrance. As soon as they met, he quietly asked, “Have you heard from your Grandma Viola recently?” Skylar shook her head. “No, I haven’t heard from Grandma Viola in a while. Her phone has been off the entire time.”
She was genuinely concerned about Viola’s well–being. It had been an extended period without any communication, and she had no clue about Viola’s whereabouts.
Alexander sighed, his voice tinged with disappointment. “She disappeared from Jipsburg so abruptly some 20 or 30 years ago, and we haven’t received any news since then. Now, she’s vanished once more. If your Grandma Viola were around, the person behind these malicious acts wouldn’t dare to be so bold.”
Skylar silently prayed, hoping that Viola was safe and sound.
Alexander led Skylar inside. They greeted many people along the way.
For those who didn’t recognize Skylar, Alexander took the opportunity to introduce her to his friends.
Although Skylar was still relatively new to Alexander’s company, everyone treated her with respect, deferring to Alexander’s position.
Once seated, Skylar felt an unsettling gaze on her back–one that was hard to ignore and seemed unfriendly.
After being stared at for a while, it became uncomfortable. Skylar turned around to see who it was.
Just as she turned, her eyes met Vera’s.
Today, Vera wore a glamorous dress with her hair styled in large waves. She looked stunning and captivating. However, her eyes were filled with lingering security and disdain, reminiscent of their recent encounter at the restaurant. This is property © of NôvelDrama.Org.
Skylar was baffled by Vera’s condescending attitude. Vera always seemed to regard her with a sense of superiority. If it was due to Joe, Skylar had nothing to say. Their relationship was not her concern.
With a chilly glance, Skylar averted her gaze. Alexander noticed her discomfort and inquired, “Is everything alright, Skye?”
“Yes, Mr. Gardner Senior. I’m alright,” Skylar replied with a polite smile.
Seeing Skylar’s cold expression, Vera felt a surge of annoyance. It was as if she had taken a bite of something bitter. “She’s really opened my eyes. It’s utterly disgusting,”
