Mayra’s phone vibrated. She assumed it was the school calling, likely urging her to
return
Setting down the boxes and bottles, she glanced at the caller ID. Excitement danced her eyes as she eagerly picked up. “Gordon, why did it take you so long to call me? What’s been going on?”
Gordon’s deep voice came through. “What are you doing now?”
Tm thinking about you!” she replied without hesitation, her words candid and genuine.
They hadn’t been in touch since Anderson had taken her from Paramount Hall. She waited for Gordon’s response but heard only laughter. “Hahaha, Gordon, why are you blushing?” It was a familiar voice. It was Gordon’s best friend, Samuel Moore. Gordon and Samuel were classmates, and the two always secured the top two spots in school rankings. Both were also guaranteed admission and offered a full–ride scholarship to the University of Belchester.
She remembered Anderson had warned her before. “If you meet Gordon again, I’ll withdraw all the financial support for him.”
Mayra wouldn’t dare cross Anderson. He always kept his word and followed through on his threats.
Just as she was about to respond, a cab pulled up in front of her. The window rolled down, and Gordon leaned out the window. He was the very person she’d been longing to see.
Samuel got out and went to the front passenger seat. “Mayra, the back seat is for you lovebirds. I’ll sit in the front.”
Seeing Myra dumbfounded, he teased, “What’s the matter? Are you speechless because you’re so happy to see your boyfriend?”
“I didn’t come looking for Gordon, he came to look for me.” Mayra reasoned inwardly. “Andy shouldn’t be too mad if he finds out,” she added, a tad unsure.
With the boxes and bottles still in her hands, Mayra hesitated for a bit before eventually getting into the car. Gordon scooted over to make room.
“Gordon, where have you been? Why didn’t you reply to my moses
“I was preparing for a competition,” he explained briefly. “What are you carrying?”
Mayra smiled. “These are the cardboard boxes and plastic bottles I collected. I’m planning to sell them.”
The driver couldn’t help but comment, “Young man, your girlfriend is so thrifty and hardworking. She’s wife material.”
Mayra smiled. “You’ve got a good eye, sir.”
Gordon took the things from her without a word.
Samuel turned around and said, “Mayra, I heard you transferred schools, Is that true? Gordon rushed back as soon as he heard the news.”
Mayra nodded. “How did you guys find out?
Samuel answered, “Emily told me about it just a few days ago. She was your
deskmate, right? She knows everything about you.”
“Emily again,” Mayra thought. “Are you guys close with her?” she asked. Exclusive content © by Nô(v)el/Dr/ama.Org.
Samuel teased, “Gordon, do I smell Jealousy?”
“Cut it out,” Gordon retorted.
Samuel laughed. “Don’t worry, Mayra, Gordon is very faithful. With his sour
expression, people usually avoid him. I doubt anyone but you would be interested in him. Emily might try to stick around, but we usually ignore her.
“We tolerated her because she was your deskmate. But seriously, why did you
transfer schools out of the blue?”
Mayra hesitated and couldn’t find the words to explain.
