Chapter 38
The night was hazy, with thick dark clouds covering the dazzling moon. A heavy rainstorm appeared to be on its way.
The last fireworks erupted, and the night sky was illuminated by its light. Sparkles fell from the sky like stars. Flowers were arranged in a dreamlike manner throughout the restaurant.
Anderson's warm breath caressed Mayra's delicate face. It was the first time she had seen such an aggressive look in his eyes since her rebirth. It was as if he wanted to possess her.
His gaze was profound. She felt as if she was trapped in his cold aura, which formed an unseen cage around her, locking her inside. She couldn't get away, but she was willing to fall into his deep eyes.
No, they couldn't be like this! Mayra seemed to realize something and suddenly abruptly pushed Anderson away.
Although she appeared to be calm, her panicked tone revealed her true feelings. "I like you, but it's a familial love. I no longer have any unrealistic expectations for you. You're outstanding. No one is good enough for you except Isa!"
Her first sentence might have been false, but her last sentence was sincere. She was afraid. She was terrified!
In her previous life, Mayra fell in love with Anderson, who was 12 years older than her, but he eventually sent her to another man. She was pregnant with Lucian's child and was tortured to death before being buried in a garbage dump.
She believed Anderson's vague statements were just a test to see if she still had unrealistic fantasies about him.
He slowly straightened up and placed one hand in his pocket. At this point, every emotion in his eyes disappeared, and they became cold and distant again. He had restrained all his emotions that shouldn't have existed.
"That's not what I want to hear. I clearly warned you not to get too close to Gordon. Why didn't you listen to me? Is it because I can't control you anymore, and you're now deaf to my words?" Text property © Nôvel(D)ra/ma.Org.
Mayra shuddered and explained, "Gordon only helped me with my tutoring. This time, I got full marks in math because of his help. My teacher said that if I continued to receive poor grades, I would be expelled from the school.
"I wanted to call you several times, but your phone number no longer exists. I assumed you no longer wanted me and thought I was a burden, so I dared not call you again.
"If I was expelled from school and unable to study, I would be unable to support myself. I had no choice but to go to Gordon."
Anderson's gaze deepened. He did cancel his original phone number. He had been so busy with the company recently that he forgot to tell her his new phone number.
Was she his burden? He did think so. But he had no idea when such thoughts began to diminish day by day. He seemed to be used to the presence of his sister, who had no blood relationship with him.
Anderson had raised Mayra since she was five. He could figure out what she was thinking from every move she made, no matter how little. Half of her words were true but half of them were false. Why did she lie?
"Some lies can only be used once in this life. What kind of reason do you want to use the next time you lie to me? Huh?"
"I- I didn't lie. Everything I said was true."
Anderson chuckled, but his voice was cold. "But you didn't dare to look at me when you were speaking. You've grown up and have your secrets now. I can't even tell which of your words is true!"
