Chapter 39
The man in the elevator was tall and handsome, wearing a white shirt with cargo pants and brown sneakers. His sleeves were pulled up to his elbows, revealing his muscular arm. He was carrying two gigantic bags that seemed to weigh quite heavily, thus making his forearm muscles appear even more defined than usual.
Charles went out to buy some groceries and necessities that Naomi would need for her stay. He was already occupied with the two bags of groceries, and all of a sudden, his phone rang. He transferred one of the bags to his other hand and used his free hand to take the call. ConTEent bel0ngs to Nôv(e)lD/rama(.)Org .
It was Scan, probably calling to ask him how things were going.
At the same time, the elevator stopped right at his floor, so Charles picked up the call. He stepped out of the elevator as the doors slid open and did not even notice the man standing in front of him. All his attention was focused on balancing two bags of groceries in one hand and taking his call with the
other.
“Hello?” he said into the phone. As he stepped out of the elevator, he caught sight of a familiar silhouette out of the corner of his eye. He was just about to turn around to get a closer look when Sean’s voice rang out in his ear, “How’s she doing now? Is she still unconscious?”
He paused and replied, “She’s awake now.”
“Is she okay?”
Charles smiled. “She’s fine. She’s doing much better now.”
“I can hear you smiling. Come on, you have to admit that her getting hurt is a good thing for you?”
Charles chuckled when he heard Sean’s teasing tone. “What do you mean, it’s a good thing for me?”
“Think about it; you’ve been finding excuses to hang around her all the time, and now that she’s gotten hurt, you have the perfect reasons to linger by her side a little longer. Isn’t that a good thing? It’s a once–in–a–lifetime opportunity, mate! You have to hold onto it! Fate is on your side!”
Sean was even more excited than Charles was.
Charles was rather speechless at this explanation. “Well, in a way, you’re right, but I’d rather she not get hurt at all.”
Naomi’s safety was more important to him than anything.
“Tsk, you’re impossible. I’ve got goosebumps from how disgusting you were. I don’t feel like talking to you anymore! You’re lovesick!”
With that, Sean hung up the phone. Charles grinned and continued making his way toward Naomi’s room, but all of a sudden, he froze in his footsteps.
He recalled catching sight of someone he knew when he came out of the elevator.
The smile disappeared from Charles‘ face. He turned around and glanced at the elevator, but the doors were already closed.
Charles continued trudging down the hallway.
He was rather surprised to learn that Naomi was still in touch with her ex–husband. However, on second thought, he decided that it made perfect sense; just because two people were divorced did not mean they could not stay in touch anymore.
However, Charles had to admit that his throat clenched when he saw Scott’s name in Naomi’s call
history.
He was worried that they would reconcile again.
This was his first time feeling such fear and anxiety.
Charles‘ grip tightened around the bags he was carrying, and his footsteps quickened.
Meanwhile, Scott watched as the elevator doors slid shut, the image of Charles‘ face still etched in his
mind.
