It’s been five hours since Viola left to get Nina from the airport. I tried calling her phone but it was switched off. I sighed after gulping a little red wine, suspecting that she and her friend went to have fun or something, but she should’ve told me first before leaving. 

I groaned when Pedro knocked on my door and entered my room. He eyes looked slightly scared, that was strange. He’s delivered some unpleasant news to me before and he never looked afraid to tell me because he knew I could take it so, what’s with him now? 

“Pedro, what’s wrong?”I asked but he looked away from me as he said, “it’s all over the news sir, have you not seen it?”

“You’re calling me Sir now? This must be really bad. Did Klyde…die?”I asked, twirling my wine with a little too much excitement to hear a confirmation to my suspicion but he just avoided eye contact with me and then he turned on the TV in my room.

I heard the sound of glass shattering when I saw Viola being brought out of one of our cars, the amount of bullet holes that I saw on the car was just too much to comprehend. 

“Someone killed Viola?”I said with a choked up voice that I wasn’t even sure was mine. I saw her head covered in blood and her eyes tightly shut as she was carried into an ambulance. 

“Who would do this?!”I yelled, smashing the remotes against the TV. I was full of so much angst that I stormed out of my room and grabbed my car keys, planning to head straight to the house of the person I suspected was responsible but Pedro stopped me.

“Kade, it’s better that you’re with your wife. She’s not dead, that’s what the reporter said just a few seconds after you left. You should go and see her rather than seeking revenge, she needs you the most right now. You know she has no one.” 

I bawled my hand into a fist and slammed it into the wall because he was right. I would go see the woman I love first, God help the poor soul who thought it would be a good idea to attack her. He would wish he never made out of his mother alive. 

I ignored the throbbing pain in my hand and went outside the house. I was going to drive myself but Pedro insisted on driving me to the hospital.

“No way, I’m driving. If you wanna come then that’s fine.”I said and he nodded. Since I was born, I have never driven this fast for any reason – but for Viola, I drove like a mad man. 

It’s been two weeks since I went to see Viola at the hospital, she’s been in a coma all this while. The kids have been so upset, especially Derrick. He thinks his dream is coming true. 

I sat down beside her like I’ve always done everyday since I first came here, hoping she would wake up. According to the doctor she was in a state of trauma when she got shot in the stomach but thankfully it wasn’t a very bad injury and she was all healed now.

He was certain that she would wake up but he wasn’t so sure she would remember certain things afterwards. I held unto her hand and kissed it as I watched her sleep.

She was so beautiful and innocent. She did nothing to deserve this. Now that my rage has subsided, I couldn’t help but wonder why anyone would assassinate her. Looking at her again, I knew it was a miracle that she was alive because the driver died on the spot.

All I wanted was for her to wake up so I could tell her how much I love her. How much I missed her badly, I couldn’t even eat right without her around, I felt like life was so bleak to let this happen to her. 

“Kade?”I heard Viola say and I scoffed, “now I’m imagining things”I said, running my hair through my hair and shaking my head at how desperately I wanted her to wake up.

“Kade,” 

Okay, that wasn’t my imagination. I sprang to my feet when I saw Viola’s eyes were open and staring lovingly at me. She remembers me!

“Viola, hey no no, sit down. I don’t think you should be sitting up.”I said as I sat on her bed and stroked her hair. 

“What happened?” 

“You…had an accident.”I said, relunctantly and she looked at me.

“I think someone tried to kill me too,”she said innocently. 

“When I find who is responsible, they’d wish they never came out of their mother”I said through clenched teeth but she didn’t hear me. 

“I want to see my children.”She said with a sigh and then she sat up. 

“You remember them too?”I asked watching if she would wince in pain but she didn’t. She just touched her stomach where she got shot and she scoffed when she saw that her wound was all healed. 

“Why on Earth would you ask whether I remember my children?”she asked and the doctor rushed in.

“Why didn’t you tell me she’s awake?”he said and I just sighed and let him check her. 

After running some more test he asked her some questions. Afterward he exhaled and looked at the ceiling as he said, “it’s either I was mistaken with my diagnosis of her or this is a miracle.” 

“whichever it is I just want my wife back home doctor.” I said and she gasped at my attitude.

“I’m sorry, thank you doctor but can I take my wife home?” 

The man just rolled his eyes and laughed. “Not another love struck couple. Yes, you can go home with your wife. She’s stable and …. Well you can go home.” 

“Great! The kids will be excited.”I said and Viola’s face beamed with a smile then it faded gradually.

“Do they know about my accident?”she asked, her eyes widened in anticipation and I shook my head. 

“the news was too big, it couldn’t be kept from them.”I said and she sighed and rested her head on my shoulder.

“What matters is that they’ll be happy when you return.”I said and she nodded.  

She slept the whole way back and I kept checking up on her to see if she was sleeping peacefully or having a nightmare. 

When we got home, she was still deep asleep. I carried her to my room and watched her sleep, soon after the kids came running out of their room but I motioned to them to be quiet. 

They gathered around her and stared at her with concern.

“Are you sure she’s alright?”Dani asked and I carried her and placed her on my thighs. 

“I promise you she’s alright now. She wanted to see you all so badly but she’s really tired so maybe later in the day you can come see her. She will be awake by then.”I assured her and she nodded.

“I’m going to nap just like mom is.”She said getting down on her own.

“Really? We should stay with Mom and Dad”Damien suggested but Dani shook her head and they suddenly shared a knowing look. 

“It’s okay”Derrick said and Dani left.

“Wait, what was that about?”

They looked at each other but didn’t say anything afterward.

” we’re family, there’s no room for secrets in this family.”I said pulling the both of them to my sides.

“Dani hasn’t been sleeping well since mom’s accident and neither have we.”Derrick admitted with his face to the ground.

“Now that mom is fine, we just feel a little more relaxed and I don’t know, sleeping just doesn’t seem like a bad idea anymore.” 

“I’m devastated that I didn’t know this, I’m so sorry.”I said and kissed their foreheads.

“no need to be sorry Dad, it’s not your fault.”Damien said and I smiled, teasing him about his Canadian accent when he said “sorry” 

“Ugh! Dad!”Damien whined and I laughed.

“I think you boys should go have a nap too”I said after a while of silently watching Viola’s steady breathing.

“Okay”they both said and then they left. I picked up my phone and called Valora. 

“Bring in some food for my wife in the next two hours. She must’ve awoken by then.” 

“Yes sir.”She said simply and ended the call. 

With one last glance at Viola, I shifted my chair close to the chair, rested my head on the bed and slept.

I woke up to the sound of someone leaving the room and I immediately got up, standing in a defensive stance and looked around to see who intruded. 

“Are you a ninja now?”Viola asked while she adjusted the gown I wore on her to sleep.

“Valora, she and I were talking right after I ate my meal. I felt like I was starving for years!”she said and then I relaxed my tense muscles and smiled at her. 

Her eyes lingered on my body for a while and I smirked. I knew in my heart that I was ready to risk it all for Viola. She’s been through so much but she still knew how to smile in spite of everything. 

“When Kade?”she asked, throwing me off guard.

“When what?” 

“When will you come sit beside me?” 

I quickly sat beside her and we sat there staring into each other’s eyes. 

“Viola, I’m sorry for everything you’ve been through. I was so cruel to you even after you apologized thousands of times about what you did with Klyde.”I saw her smile nervously. 

“but… I guess I couldn’t forgive you because I didn’t live you.”I added and her smile dropped. 

“If I truly loved you I would have forgiven you sooner but instead I let my hatred for my brother get to me. Now, I realize that I love you Viola. I love you so much that I can’t be angry with you anymore about the past. I was being a fool to have let something like this make me realize it. I’m so sor-”

“– I love you too Kade”she said, her eyes were musty and her voice faltered as she said so. 

The emotions I had bottled up inside of me erupted when I took her lips in mine and kissed her senseless. I knew that if we don’t stop ourselves, I would end up sleeping with her and then I’ll lose my freedom but that’s the thing, I don’t care anymore. 

“I want you Kade, I know that we can’t but-“she was saying when we finally broke the kiss and taking in deep and desperate breaths. 

“just shut up and kiss me,”I growled and then moaned when she slid her tongue in my mouth. 

Today, I will lose my freedom but Viola will finally be mine.
