Chapter 1155 Heartless Breakup
Two days later, Leon entered Casper’s office, with Sage present, and informed him that everything was ready.
“Mr. Wood, please set a time. We are all prepared,” Leon said.
Casper nodded approvingly, satisfied with their preparations. “Well done. Tomorrow evening, Nia and Kevin will be attending a party. You should lay in wait beforehand and seize the opportunity.”
Leon nodded, hesitating as if he wanted to say something. Casper furrowed his brow and asked, “What is it? Do you still have doubts?”
“Mr. Wood,” Leon pondered for a moment. “I am confident that I can complete this task. However, in the event that things go awry, myself and a few of my comrades…”
“I already mentioned this before, didn’t I?” Casper replied, showing little concern and even a hint of impatience. “If you feel that the mission cannot be completed, immediately contact the authorities. Once you do, I will find a way to protect you. If you succeed, it would be the best outcome. You and your comrades will be hailed as heroes of StandHill, and I will make sure you are rewarded.”
Leon clenched his fist subtly, showing no emotion. He had never seen Casper speak so grandiosely before, even when faced with dangerous missions. The words “I will make sure you are rewarded” sounded overly theatrical.
“I understand. I will start preparing tomorrow. Mr. Wood, you can expect good news from us!” Leon said confidently.
“Very well, I leave it in your hands,” Casper replied, entrusting Leon with the heavy responsibility. However, after Leon and Sage left, Casper contemplated for a while and decided to add an extra layer of insurance.
As they walked out of the office, Leon, feeling dejected, confided his dissatisfaction to Sage, “Mr. Wood’s move is quite cunning! Killing two birds with one stone!”This content © Nôv/elDr(a)m/a.Org.
“Don’t worry, Leon. I will do my best to protect you,” Sage reassured, patting him on the shoulder.
“I never thought that by working with him, I would end up in this situation…” Leon self-mockingly remarked.
Sage was about to offer some words of comfort when his phone rang. Seeing the caller’s ID, he immediately made a hushing gesture to Leon, pulling him into the stairwell before answering the call and switching to speakerphone.
“Sage, is Leon still with you?” It was Casper’s voice.
“Leon has already left. Mr. Wood, regarding this operation, would you like me to assist in any way?” Sage asked.
“I called you for this matter, Sage. I couldn’t talk earlier. You know what the consequences will be if Leon and his team fail, right?” Casper’s voice echoed through the staircase, sounding unusually cold.
“I know. If they really fail, Leon and his team might get caught. Mr. Wood, we must do everything we can to protect them!” Sage looked into Leon’s eyes as he spoke.
“Sage, I know you have a good relationship with Leon but one must think about their own future in every situation. We need to consider the severity of things that might happen if they fail. Do you think you’ll be able to protect them then?”
“Mr. Wood… I don’t understand what you mean…” Sage hesitated.
“Although your leg’s not functioning properly now, your mind is sharp and quick-witted. I’ve always admired that about you,” Casper didn’t answer Sage’s question but continued speaking, “If something happens to Leon during this mission tomorrow night, I believe you can take his place.”
Leon widened his eyes upon hearing this statement while Sage immediately grabbed onto his wrist in fear he would react impulsively before calmly replying, “Thank you for your appreciation Mr. Wood, but I’m confident that Leon and his team will return safely.”
Casper remained silent for a few seconds before saying, “Alright then, I like people who are loyal and righteous-minded like your so tomorrow night when they’re on their mission, assist them from behind the scenes without revealing yourself. Just report everything truthfully as it happens.”
“Understood.”Sage replied before Casper hung up.
As soon as the call ended, Leon who was excited punched against the wall making a dull thudding sound.
“Leon, you understood what Mr. Wood meant, right?”Sage asked him.
“Do I even need to say it?!” Leon gritted his teeth turning around with reddened eyes staring at him, “Do exactly as per your plan! There is no hesitation left in me!”
Sage nodded heavily after which both of them parted ways within stairwell so as not arouse any suspicion.
The next evening Nia along with Kevin arrived at a private party accompanied by several bodyguards. The hostess was Nia’s best friend. Casper was originally not supposed to be here under any circumstances, but halfway through the party, he and Billy arrived at the venue. Nia shivered upon seeing him and quickly questioned her friend why she invited him here.
“I didn’t invite him. Only invited Mr. George. How could I have known he’d bring along Casper too?” Her friend replied innocently.
Nia was angry, but there was nothing she could do. Although the circle they were in was deep and complex, with intricate connections, she couldn’t find a way to dismantle Casper’s network. So during the second half of the party, she glared at Casper with indignation while he ignored her and chatted happily with his friends.
“Okay, stop staring at him,” Kevin said wearily for Nia’s sake.
Nia huffed heavily and withdrew her gaze. “When will this kind of day end? He’s obviously a fugitive but can still appear so openly in this kind of occasion!”
“Nia!” There were still many people around them. Kevin reminded her quickly.
“I know, I won’t say anything anymore, okay? I’ll drink!” Nia snorted unhappily and picked up her glass to start drinking. Kevin couldn’t persuade her to stop drinking even if he tried. By the time the party ended, Nia had already drunk quite a bit of alcohol. After saying goodbye to their host under the protection of bodyguards, Kevin took Nia home.
Meanwhile inside the venue, Casper who had been ignoring Nia and Kevin turned his head when they left and watched them disappear through the door with an expression of smug satisfaction on his face.
It was close to dawn now. Even Athegate which had been bustling earlier had quieted down considerably as there were fewer pedestrians on its streets especially those leading towards suburban areas where passing cars were also scarce.
Three black sedans drove in succession along a road leading towards a small villa. Nia and Kevin sat in one car while bodyguards occupied both cars before and after theirs respectively.
Kevin always paid extra attention to his surroundings during late and quiet nights. He ignored Nia, who was murmuring drunkenly beside him, and instead focused on the passing scenery outside the window. For some reason, he felt that the night was unusually calm.
This oppressive feeling felt particularly like calm before stormy weather arrived.
