Outside the mall, Vera dialed Jeremy’s number. He answered on the first ring.

“Mr. Hughes, it’s Vera. I just ran into your ex–wife at the mall.”

Jeremy had initially answered out of courtesy, but his expression shifted when he heard her mention Natalie. He raised an eyebrow. “Oh?”

“She’s been acting recklessly. Even though she’s just your ex–wife now, it might be best to remind her to be more careful,” Vera offered her “helpful” advice.

Jeremy’s face darkened. “Who did she offend?”

Vera quickly recounted the situation. “With how she’s acting, she’s bound to be used as a pawn.”

“What mall?” Jeremy asked, his tone sharp.

Without hesitation, Vera gave the location. She knew people in their circle couldn’t afford to have their image tarnished, and she was confident that Jeremy would confront Natalie.

“She doesn’t have to hold back with anyone when I’m around. She can say what she wants. Vera, don’t act so high and mighty in front of me.

“I know your family’s situation all too well. If you cause her any trouble, don’t expect me to be merciful.” After a brief silence, Jeremy spoke in a cold, measured tone.

Vera was left utterly stunned by his words, her eyes wide in disbelief. She had never expected such a response from him. She couldn’t believe what she was hearing. Jeremy was defending his ex– wife so fiercely.

It made no sense to her–if Jeremy cared about Natalie that much, their divorce seemed even more baffling. Now, he was threatening her over someone who wasn’t even part of his life anymore. It felt

surreal.

“Jeremy, I was only trying to help. Is this really necessary?” Vera snapped, hanging up before he could respond.

A wave of confusion hit her as she stood on the sidewalk, watching people rush past. She felt humiliated.

It seemed like everyone had been taking shots at her lately, leaving her feeling as if she were nothing more than a stray dog.

Vera had lived with pride for over 20 years, but she had never felt so defeated as she did now.

Neither Skylar nor Natalie had any reason to disrespect her like this, especially considering Natalie’s current circumstances after being discarded by Jeremy. Vera thought she should at least be shown some

courtesy.

At that moment, her phone rang.

“Mr. Martin is at the golf course on the outskirts of town. You should come quickly.”

Vera’s eyes lit up. “Got it.”

Skylar and Natalie were in a vintage–inspired boutique, trying on every dress they fancied. Before they knew it, an hour had passed.

Natalie had picked out three dresses and was beaming with joy. “These are amazing. I’m going to wear

them for a photoshoot in the Beckton.”

Skylar had the same idea: “Do you have time this weekend? We could stay there for a couple of days, buy a few more outfits, and take as many pictures as we want.”

It was the perfect opportunity to leave Jipsburg for a while and let people lower their guard. Just before leaving Yancey Residence earlier, Skylar had received a call from Aiken.

He told her that they had lost track of Viola. It was as if she had vanished into thin air.

Aiken had also asked about her situation, but Skylar couldn’t reveal much at the moment. She briefly assured him that she was fine.

The fact that Viola had disappeared only confirmed that her suspicions and Joe’s were correct. Now, they just had to wait for the person behind this to make a move.

Natalie nodded enthusiastically. “Mr. Powell has been on break for the past few days and gave me several days off. I’ll buy the other two dresses too, and then I’ll look for a pair of shoes to match. I’m

so excited thinking about taking beautiful photos.”

Skylar collected Natalie’s chosen dresses and headed to the counter to pay. When she returned, she was startled to see Jeremy walking into the store.
