Chapter 396
If she could help it, Selena really didn't want to keep this standoff going with him. It was a road leading nowhere, just a recipe for disaster for both of them.
If they could both just take a step back, that would be perfect.
She wasn't hung up on getting anything more from him. Her earlier talks about splitting his assets were just her way of dealing with the frustration of it all. But when your heart moves on, everything about that person becomes meaningless. Everett was left hanging, his hopes dashed, and disappointment settled in heavy between them.
Just like Selena found it hard to grasp why he wouldn't budge, Everett was baffled by her refusal to give in.
Being Mrs. Bennett, loving him, respecting him, having his kids-those were the dreams she once cherished. Why couldn't they keep living that dream?
Why did it have to be so hard?
Everett shrugged off her hand, his handsome face slipping back into its usual mask of indifference. Without saying another word, he turned and walked away.
Selena stood there, rooted to the spot until she heard the car start downstairs. The sound faded into the distance, and her hands, hanging by her sides, slowly clenched into fists.
She had given it her all.
For Mateo's sake, she had tried so hard to end things peacefully, but the stubborn man just wouldn't cooperate.
So if that's how he wanted it, she wasn't going to hold back anymore.C0ntent © 2024 (N/ô)velDrama.Org.
The car flew down the wide street, the speed doing nothing to calm the storm brewing inside Everett.
In no time, he found himself parked outside his downtown apartment, sitting in the car, staring up at the light left on just for him, yet he hesitated to go up.
He rolled down the window, pulled out a pack of cigarettes, lit one, and took a deep drag.
Even though he'd just eased his physical tension, his heart felt empty, like it was missing something solid to latch onto.
He pondered, where did it all go wrong with Selena?
Was it just because they lost Mateo?
She clung to that mistake, wanting nothing in return, not even the promise of their child becoming the Bennett family heir. Didn't she realize that, to him, that was the
ultimate promise?
It meant all the glory and wealth he had worked for would be shared with her, and in time, it would all be her children's!
Isn't that what any woman would want?
His mother, after securing her spot
as Lady Howard and getting thirty percent of his father's wealth, never caused a fuss again. She even joined forces with his father in
business, living in mutual respect to
this day.
Selena was just too naïve, spoiled by his indulgence. Other women would give anything to get the most from their husbands, and here he was, handing it to her on a silver platter. Why wasn't she content? The phone on the dashboard wouldn't stop ringing-Margot, no doubt wondering why he hadn't shown up yet.
Everett picked it up, staring at the persistent caller ID.
Suddenly, he thought about how long it had been since Selena had called just to check on him.
Now she seemed indifferent. Whether he was home, if he had eaten, or if he was cold-she never asked anymore, a far cry from the early years of their marriage when she fussed over every little thing. Everett tightened his grip on the phone, then slid his finger across the screen to answer.
"Everett, are you here yet?"
Margot's voice came through, eager yet gentle. After a pause, she added with concern, "I wasn't trying to rush you, just worried something might have happened on the way..." Everett pressed his lips together, staying silent for a moment.
He knew that if he wanted comfort
or to bask in a woman's warmth, all he had to do was head up to the apartment. There would be a woman smiling at him, gentle and caring, unlike Selena, who was now cofe, sharp, and distant.
