Chapter 11
Hadn't Selena once declared she'd split Everett's assets right down the middle and refused to back down? As if reading Joy's mind, Selena parted her lips and addressed breezily, "Making my own money feels like a better choice. I'd rather not dirty my hands with that
jerk's
cash."
Joy opened her mouth, about to say something, but Selena clicked a few times on her mouse and sent off an email. Then, she turned to Joy with a smile that made her eyes sparkle. "Or do you doubt I can take care of myself?"
Joy was momentarily at a loss for words, quickly shaking her head. "Of course not. Remember three years ago, when you were just starting out as a journalist, and you exposed that corruption scandal? It shook the whole media world. If your marriage hadn't forced you back home and kept you from work, you'd be soaring by now, and money wouldn't be an issue."
Selena's stellar performance had captured the attention of Ink & Insight, a legendary and secretive place where journalists were industry icons. The best part? Besides a steady paycheck, there was no cap on project commissions. So, if you had the knack for digging up valuable stories, you'd get a hefty share, with bonuses mid-year and at year's end.
Countless media folks dreamed of joining Ink & Insight, but Selena received a personal invite from the editor-in-chief. Naturally, after joining, she never let him down. Every task he assigned was executed flawlessly, making her one of his top reporters. The editor-in-chief had even planned to send her abroad for more training, but she suddenly chose to marry instead.
Selena shook her head gently, not making excuses, and admitted, "Three years ago, I was love-struck and foolishly chasing after a man. But in the end, it was all for nothing."
She had imagined a perfect life with Everett, dreaming of marriage, kids, and growing old together. But when she found out his heart belonged to someone else, her competitive streak kicked in, and she was determined to win him over.
Selena reflected on those three years, and her mind was filled with regret over the crazy, degrading things she'd done. A man had only slowed her down!Content protected by Nôv/el(D)rama.Org.
Joy watched her for a long moment, finally seeing the seriousness in her demeanor, unlike the usual banter.
Joy's eyes held something deep for a fleeting second. Then, she gently hugged Selena, "Selena, whatever you decide, I'm with you! I can't wait to see you shine again!"
Becoming a journalist who fights for justice had always been Selena's dream.
Before she got a reply from the editor-in-chief, Selena received a call from Derick. Her disdain was clear, her tone icy, "What's up?"
Sensing the mood, Derick cut to the chase, "Mr. Bennett has a dinner party tomorrow night and wants his wife to attend. I'll pick you up at five. It'll take about two hours to get ready, and we should be at the venue by eight."
Selena almost thought she misheard After all that had
happened, what gave Everett the nerve to order her around like this? Was it her previous devotion that fueled his confidence?
She didn't hold back in her response, "Is he out of his mind? Let him know we're practically divorced. There's no need to play the happy couple at those mind-numbing business dinners!" en FindNovel
