Marrying my high school bully

Dante and the truth

Dexter

“Lorraine called me two nights ago,” I informed Wyatt after settling inside his car where we would finalize Dante’s setup.

His eyes popped as he gazed at me. “Are you serious? You should have told me immediately so that I’d track the number she called you with.” He said and I slapped my forehead.

“You’re right, but I was overwhelmed with the nostalgic and joyful feelings that came with hearing her voice once again, that I didn’t even remember to do the proper thing.” I placed my head on the headrest, as I remembered wishing and praying that she would call again. “I tried to call her back, but her it couldn’t connect. I’m guessing she used a burner phone.”

“And if she used a burner phone, it means that she didn’t want to be found.” He interpreted as I sighed in disappointment.

If I were in her shoes, I wouldn’t want to be found after all I’d put her through.

“What will happen now? Is Dante close by?” I asked and he nodded, his eyes glued to his phone.

It pissed me off that my life, especially the one about relationships, was in a mess. What I felt with Melissa was surreal and knowing that she was carrying my children nearly blew me off the roof.

“Once Dante gets here, I’ll notify you. The both of us would be discussing the bar where I’ll convince him about the new job I have to offer him. Have the teaser ready as well because you’re going to knock him out.” He prepped me.

His phone beeped and he gave me a knowing look.

“He’s here?”

“Yeah. Put on your earphones so that you can listen to whatever we discuss. We have to be quick about this because Mira and I are going to check out a wedding venue.” He smirked.

Then I realized that I hadn’t told him about Melissa’s pregnancy. “You don’t have to rub it in my face, because I have my comeback.” I stuck out my tongue and he shoved his middle finger at me.

“Whatever helps you sleep at night.” He taunted me and slammed the door before I could respond.

I watched him enter the bar, and a few minutes later, someone dressed in a black hoodie with matching black pants trotted in as well.

By his lean outline and gait, I could tell it was Dante. So I waited for a few seconds before tuning in to listen to their conversation.

Drake surprised me by how eager he was to get a job, and Wyatt was so good at getting answers from him. I knew that it was his job, but he was extra.

Some minutes later, my phone beeped. Another notification that he was done and they were heading over. I moved from the front passenger’s seat and relaxed at the back, my face covered with a black mask.

I watched them stroll out of the bar, and then Wyatt knocked on the window.

“The prospective bodyguard is here. I’ve interviewed him and I think he’s the best man for the job.” He said through the window, while I suppressed the laughter that threatened to burst out of my throat.

“I’d like to discuss with whom I want to employ while we are heading home.” My voice sounded muffled because of the mask covering my mouth and it was to my advantage so that Dante wouldn’t overhear our conversation.

Wyatt winked at me and then asked Dante to hop in. I moved to the far end as the door swung open. He swept in while I kept my gaze fixed at the front.

“Good evening, sir.” He greeted me with a half-calm tone as his voice was slightly jittery.

“Good evening,” I replied and darted my gaze to him.

Our eyes met, and he shrank backward on recognizing who I was. He swallowed, then glanced at Wyatt, who had started the car.

“Mr Hemmingway?”

I took off the mask, a wide smirk spread on my lips. “It used to be Boss. What happened to that?”

He looked away and rubbed his palms against the other, his face turning pale. “Ummm… I… Hi, boss.” He stuttered and I scolded myself for not searching for him.

He had a lot of skeletons in his cupboard.

“How have you been since you disappeared on my big day?” I probed, the smirk still plastered on my lips.

He opened his mouth, snapped it shut, and then dragged in air. “Mr Durand, this wasn’t the agreement.” Dante argued. “You said that you were going to bring me to my new employer, what am I doing with him?”

“I fulfilled my end of the bargain and right now, you are speaking with your new employer. So why are you whining like a kid, huh?” Wyatt fired back at him.Published by Nôv'elD/rama.Org.

“What do you want from me, Boss?” He asked grudgefully.

“The whole truth, Dante.”

He quickly masked his scared expression with a veil of aloofness, but I could see right through the facade and the gleams of fear were evident in his eyes.

He didn’t even want to be anywhere near me.

“What truth are you talking about?” He murmured.

“I want to know who killed my sister?”

He shut his eyes, shaking his head with balled fists. “I don’t know what happened to her.”

The memory of the uncertain circumstances surrounding her death reopened hidden feelings that were painful enough to infuriate me.

“No, Dante,” I said with a warning tone. “Don’t try to act ignorant with me because the end won’t be funny. I know that Lorraine didn’t kill Victoria, and you might know what happened because you were with her the whole time-”

“Can you stop accusing me?” He shot back, his brows furrowed. “Yes, I drove her, but it wasn’t my fault she got kidnapped by Emilia and Leonardo. I was only doing the job they paid me for…” He clamped his lips shut, realizing that he had spilled too much. “Oh shit!”

I chuckled darkly. “Shit is what you’ll feed on if you don’t follow my instructions. And don’t take my words as a joke because I know where your mother is right now. One wrong move and she’s gone.” I threatened and he gasped. “You’ve worked with me before, and I’m sure you remember that I’m not to be messed with. So what do you say?” I asked as if he had the option of not doing what I wanted.

He tilted his head downward for a while, and when he raised his face, he asked. “What do you want me to do for you?”

I patted him on the shoulder with a grim smile. “Now we’re talking. Let’s get you fed first, then you tell me how everything happened from scratch.”
