Chapter 39
Chapter 39
Zane pressed his silver-framed glasses against his nose bridge and lit a cigarette. “You can beat it.”
“That’s not what buddies do. I took care of your business. The least you could do is offer me a drink
instead of kicking me out. I’m not going anywhere tonight,” Sam rested his back against the sofa.
Zane uttered, “Mrs. Cook, pour Mr. Lambert a glass of water.”
“Do you want water, Mr. Lambert? You don’t look thirsty to me.” Mrs. Cook answered in an unfriendly
tone.
Sam replied, “Are you walking all over me too, Mrs. Cook?”
Mrs. Cook was an old lady in her fifties who practically raised Zane. Zane and Zane’s friends never saw
Mrs. Cook as the domestic help. She was more like a friendly grandmother to the youngsters, nagging
and giving them advice every now and then.
The old lady handed Sam a bottle of water. “Why are you indulging Mr. Zane with his antics? What do
you mean by halfway there? You’re giving Old Mrs. Atlas an excuse to come at you.”
A year and a half ago, Mrs. Cook heard about Zane’s marriage and happily decorated the place for the
newlyweds with a team. She even had a nursery room ready. Alas, Zane left for abroad and was away
for a year right after tying the knot.
Mrs. Cook thought the marriage was off since Sally was the only person fond of the girl. To Mrs. Cook’s
surprise, Zane told her to refresh the interior on the night of his return abroad so as to welcome the
lady of the house.
Zane spoke with affection at the time, more loving than any tone he had ever taken with Mrs. Cook. It
appeared he reserved all his tenderness for the girl.
The arrival of Zane’s wife gave Mrs. Cook the boost to add touches to the house in line with a woman’s
preference. However, Zane’s wife was nowhere to be found the night of the following day.
Due to Zane’s busy work schedule, he had not been back to the villa. Since then, Mrs. Cook had not
heard anything about the young Mrs. Atlas either.
Mrs. Cook had been looking forward to Zane bringing his wife home, only for Sam to pop in and say
they were divorced. That was the reason why Mrs. Cook gave Sam an attitude.
“You can’t blame me for that, Mrs. Cook.” Since Sam was most afraid of Old Mrs. Atlas, he grabbed his
jacket and made a run for it. Once at the door, he returned and commented, “I’m traveling tomorrow,
Zane. I can’t have a drink with you on your birthday, but I got you something special. The gift will be
delivered in two days.”
“The gift is not necessary.” Zane turned on his heel to go upstairs when Mrs. Cook said, “Zane, can I
ask you something?”
Zane stopped. “What is it?”
Mrs. Cook inquired, “Are you really divorcing Mrs. Atlas? Weren’t you going to bring her home?”
“There won’t be a Mrs. Atlas in the house, so stop nagging me about it.” Zane’s phone notification
came on, and he received an alert about a local car accident.
Zane was about to swipe the notification away when his eyes drew to a delicate face attached to the
headline.
He anxiously grabbed his car key and dashed out, leaving behind a rather confused Mrs. Cook. This text is property of Nô/velD/rama.Org.
Zane put the metal on the pedal to get to Rosewood General Hospital. He tracked down Lianne’s ward
from the address in the news article.
He picked up on Lianne’s soft and affectionate voice right outside her ward. “It was only a scratch, Ty.
Don’t worry.”
Zane looked through the tiny window of the door and saw Lianne sitting up on the bed. A man sitting by
the bed reached out and felt her forehead temperature. The man tenderly asked, “Are you really okay?”
“Do I have to get out of bed and spin for you a few times to trust that I’m okay?” Lianne leaned forward
to get out of bed, only for the man to pin her back in ‘an upright position.
“Regardless, we’re staying at the hospital for observation. It’s not a discussion.” As the man had his
back facing the door, Zane could not get a look at his face.
Zane had a sudden urge to barge in and look at the man Lianne was committed to. Why did the man
deserve all her attention?
“Are you visiting anybody, sir?” A nurse doing rounds interrupted him.
Zane glanced at the nurse before turning around and making his way out.
He arrived at the parking lot and lit a cigarette. While smoking, he let out a scoff. 1
