Chapter Nineteen
Alexa rushed Jace to the nearest hospital and because Jace was a patient there, he was rushed into the Emergency room (ER) without bothering Alexa for money first.
Alexa was asked to wait outside.
While waiting outside the room, she sat on one of the waiting chairs and bit her lip continuously.
She was nervous as fvck and her countenance didn’t fail to show it to everyone who looked at her face.
She started a silent prayer in her heart. This was one of the rare situations where she sincerely prayed with all her heart.
She wasn’t that much of a religious person, what am I saying?
She wasn’t a religious person, but she believed that there was someone above who controlled everything that happened.
She bit her lips while praying to the extent her lips started bleeding.
Her eyes started glancing at the ER every time.
She was a nervous wreck.
Finally, the door to the ER opened and the Doctor came out.
Moments later, the two nurses that followed her in came out drawing a trolley behind them.
Alexa didn’t notice that the Doctor had come out of the Emergency room until the Doctor walked toward her.
The Doctor was just a few steps away from Alexa when she raised her head and saw her.
Alexa quickly stood up from her seat and ran toward the Doctor.
“Dr. Stephanie, how’s my brother?” She asked her nerves on their ends.
“He’s doing better than how he was the time you brought him here.” The Doctor said and Alexa sighed in relief.
“We’ll need to discuss more though. See me in my office.” Dr. Stephanie said and Alexa’s breath hitched.
Dr. Stephanie walked to her office while Alexa followed closely behind.
Finally, they got to Stephanie’s office.
“Please sit.” Dr. Stephanie hung her white coat, and offered Alexa a seat and Alexa sat.
Stephanie walked to her seat, and when she sat, she faced Alexa to address the issue at hand.
“So Doctor, is everything alright with my brother?” Alexa asked, worry visible on her face.
“He’s better, but he’s not fine at all. He’s very far away from being fine… Though, he’s still alive.”
“What’s wrong with him? Why did he suddenly foam in his mouth and faint?”
“Well from the tests conducted, Jace got too emotional today, and it was a huge stress for his holed heart.” The Doctor said and heard that Alexa broke down.
She was the reason why her brother faced death.
She was the reason why Jace became too emotionally stressed.
“I caused it all,” Alexa muttered through her tears.
“You caused what?”
“He was only saying the truth. He only said those words to make me see what he was seeing… But I, selfishly… I hit him.” Alexa broke into another bout of tears.
“Don’t be too hard on yourself dear. His emotional breakdown wasn’t the only thing that caused what happened.” Dr. Stephanie revealed.
“Don’t try to make me feel better. I’m to blame for everything.” Alexa said dejectedly.
“His drugs. Did you come to get his drugs the day I told you to?”
“Oh no! I forgot about that.”
“How could you forget about your brother’s medics?”
“It wasn’t like I forgot actually. The day I was to come to get his drugs, I went job hunting because I lost my previous job. I couldn’t get a job that day and the only thing on me wasn’t enough for his drugs.” Alexa explained.
“How about the next day? You could have come to get it the next day.”
“A lot went on in my life. My mind didn’t go towards the drugs since he was doing so well.”
“What kind of a guardian are you? You should worry about your brother’s health and medics. Putting your brother’s life on ‘Maybe’ wouldn’t be such a good idea.” The Doctor bashed Alexa.
“I’m a bad sister, I know. That’s why I said it was all my fault. Only if I had money, maybe Jace wouldn’t be at this point.”
“Well, the only thing left for me to say to you is Jace’s heart is holed some more.” The Doctor said.
“Holed some more? You don’t mean…?” Alexa’s mouth opened.
“That’s exactly what I mean. Your brother’s heart widened a bit due to emotional stress overload and he needs surgery before next month.”
“What if his surgery extends next month?” Alexa thought out loud.
“Then, he dies.” Dr. Stephanie said bluntly and at this, Alexa hated the lady.
She was too blunt.
Alexa knew professional doctors were always blunt, but this lady telling her Jace would die right to her face was far too blunt!
She wondered how she and Jace (actually, only Jace. She’s just his guardian) ended up being her patient.
If only she could switch Jace’s doctor!
Alexa was about to reply when a male nurse came inside the office.
“Your last worked on the patient is awake now Ms.” The nurse announced.
“Alright Jamie, you can leave now. Thanks for the info.” Dr. Stephanie replied to him.
“Your brother is awake now, You can go meet him.”
“How do I know his ward?” Alexa asked.
“Go out, Jamie should be standing right in front of my door. If he’s not, then check the hallway. He’ll take you to Jace.”
“Alright. Thanks.” Alexa said and was almost at the door when Dr. Stephanie spoke.
“If you want Jace to last even if you can’t afford his drugs, avoid things that’d get him upset.”
“Leave your phone number with the nurse on the desk so I’d forward you the bills for all Jace’s treatment. Including the bill, you’re going to be asked to pay for his coming surgery.” Dr. Stephanie said.
Alexa stared blankly at her.
How would she tell this doctor that she didn’t have a phone?
She thought.
That’d be too embarrassing, so Alexa only nodded and left the office. This content © Nôv/elDr(a)m/a.Org.
