Chapter 20 

Carrie’s red lips curved into a mocking smile as she looked at Madelyn.

Madelyn’s expression froze, and she looked awkward.

One would always know who one’s true friends were. In her past life, many of her friends distanced themselves from her because of her entanglement with Easton as they felt that she was immoral.

If she hadn’t said on the phone that she wanted to fight back against the news reports about her and Easton today, Carrie probably wouldn’t have agreed to see her.

Everyone except Madelyn had been able to see things clearly.

“Let’s go in!” Madelyn led Carrie inside.

She had plugged the storage device into the laptop. She carried it over to Carrie and placed it in front of her. Carrie watched the video of Madelyn beating Easton up and laughed. “What did he do to provoke you?”

Not too long ago, Madelyn had been madly in love with Easton and insisted on

divorcing Andrew. Why were Madelyn and Easton now coming to blows with each

other instead?

Madelyn picked up the glass in front of her and took a sip without answering. She asked instead, “Can this report be released today?”

“Are you in that much of a rush?”

Madelyn nodded. “Yes!”

If she weren’t in a rush, she wouldn’t have contacted Carrie.

Carrie was known in the industry for her sharp tongue. Every word she wrote was strong and impactful. People found it difficult not to believe her.

Athena was about to turn 80, and Madelyn did not want this incident to affect her relationship with Andrew and the others.

Was Easton trying to drag her down with him?

If so, she would make him lose the entire Miller family.

Carrie replied in a mocking tone, “Of course, it can be released. But what kind of

report are you planning on releasing? Is it just going to be a dry piece about how you got sick of him and dumped him?”

Madelyn’s lips twitched.

Was Carrie really going to help her?

“Well, that’s not our main focus.” Madelyn found another video of surveillance footage on the laptop.

After calling Carrie just now, she had made thorough preparations. It was a video taken at Elena’s birthday banquet, when she had gone into a room with Easton. Before going in, Elena had even stuck her head out cautiously to check the corridor.

They were obviously having an affair!

“Are you getting revenge on Easton for dumping you, then?”

Madelyn was exasperated.

Carrie wasn’t even bothered to hide the scorn in her eyes!

Madelyn knew that in the past, she had never been able to endure her friends talking about Easton and Elena. She had seemed fixated on the idea that the two of them were the two people in the world who treated her best.

It did seem like a slap in the face to let Carrie see all this, especially when Carrie was the first one to have warned her. “It’s not revenge. You just have to write that he approached me to ruin Andrew and seduced me!”

“So, the two of you have fallen out and become enemies, and you’re pushing all the blame on him? Maddie, I never realized what an asshole you were!”

Couldn’t Carrie refrain from sniping at her?

She said huffily, “Can you release this report today or not?”

“Of course, of course. Don’t be angry, pretty lady. But I have to say that I like how much of an asshole you are!”

Madelyn was rendered speechless.

Why did Carrie have to be like that?

When Carrie saw that Madelyn was so angry that she could barely speak, she laughed and pulled out the storage device from the laptop before standing up. give me two hours and you’ll see.”

She walked off, looking rather ruthless.

Madelyn’s phone had been ringing incessantly for a while. She picked it

looked at it, only to see it was Caleb calling. She already knew what he was going to

say.

She picked up the call. “Hello?”

“What’s going on with you?”

Even over the phone, Madelyn could hear his anger as he gritted his teeth.

Madelyn said sarcastically, “I didn’t think that you’d be interested in my affairs, Mr. Garcia.”

The form of address was formal and distant. She was distancing herself from him at every moment, and it made Caleb’s chest heave with anger. He wished that he could burn Madelyn to ashes through the phone.

“Madelyn, don’t you know what kind of person Mr. Andrew is? How could you have an affair with Mr. Easton? I should never have agreed to let you marry Mr. Andrew.” 

It was hard to imagine that a father would say something like that. He didn’t even ask her for an explanation about what had happened, and he was putting all his assumptions on her instead.

Madelyn narrowed her eyes dangerously and sneered, “Do you even have a say in this?”

If Caleb really did have a say, then it wouldn’t have been Madelyn who married Andrew. Why was Caleb acting as if he had any power to do anything?

“Y–You little asshole!” Caleb hadn’t expected her to retort so directly, and he was furious.

His dislike of Madelyn intensified.

Madelyn no longer held out any hope of getting them to like her. “I’m not having an affair with Easton, and this isn’t what you should concern yourself about. However, Elena and Easton are having an affair, and that’s going to thoroughly humiliate you.”

After saying her piece, Madelyn hung up.

The room immediately fell silent, but inwardly, her world was in turmoil.

People always said that family would always be their safe harbor no matter what happened to them, but she had never had that. She had been abandoned by them from the moment she was born.

There was a dark cloud hanging over the Garcia residence.

Amelia had heard everything that Madelyn had said on the phone. She said angrily, She’s getting worse and worse.”

All the blood had rushed to Caleb’s head, and he could not speak at all.

Both he and Amelia felt that Andrew was targeting the Garcias because Madelyn had betrayed him and seduced Easton. They felt that Andrew was venting all his anger on them.

Elena came back in and saw Caleb pacing back and forth in the living room, looking very grim. Amelia was sitting on the couch with a dark expression on her face. “Mom, Dad? Has something happened?”

When Amelia and Caleb heard Elena’s voice, their expressions softened considerably.

Elena went over to Amelia, and Amelia pulled her down to sit. Sighing, she said, “If only she was half as considerate as you are, wouldn’t have to worry so much.”

Just thinking about Madelyn irritated Amelia.

Madelyn had been restless even in the womb, and now, she was bringing such a disaster onto the Garcia family!

When Elena heard that it was about Madelyn again, there was a triumphant flash in her eyes. However, she maintained a gentle demeanor. “It’s alright, Mom. You know that Maddie likes Easton. Don’t worry, she knows what she’s doing.”

“If she did, then she wouldn’t have gotten our family into so much trouble.”

It would have been better if Elena had not tried to speak up for Madelyn.

At the mention of that, Caleb thought about how every bank he had approached in the past two days had refused to lend them any money. They were clearly trying to push the Garcias to the edge.

It was all because of Madelyn.

“Dad, Maddie likes Easton. You know very well how she got married to Andrew. This isn’t her fault.” Elena pretended to speak up for Madelyn.

Caleb was still angry. “No matter how she married into the Miller family, she’s Mr. Andrew’s wife now. How could she get involved with his nephew?”

The more he talked about it, the angrier Caleb got.

What did Andrew see in Madelyn? If he had been attracted to Elena instead, Caleb wouldn’t have been in such a difficult position.

Elena hesitated, looking like she really wanted to speak up for Madelyn.
