SIKE
Brielle actually ratted me out to Mr. Steve. I never really conceived the idea that she’d snitch on me; I thought she only threatened to, to keep me wrapped around her fingers. Mr. Steve went silent for a while and during those moments of silence, I thought of possible punishments I could receive – a query, a suspension without pay, or worst case still, a sack! ‘I’m doomed!’ What reply was I to give him if he asked me why I chose to deceive everyone to get the work done. I felt a rush of the combination of the feelings of anxiety and dread in me, my heart raced a bit faster than usual. I was extremely nervous but somehow managed to maintain my composure. I waited patiently to get an earful from our boss.
“Miss Brielle?” he called out to my stun; I thought the next name he would utter was going to be ‘Mr. Cayden?’, probably to ask if what she said was true.
“Yes sir,” she answered with a sense of fulfilment. I was too angsty to even be mad at her.
“Throughout the entire period you spent with Mr. Cayden here, did he in any way derail from his duty?” he questioned. I didn’t really understand the point he was trying to make right now.
“No sir, he didn’t,” she said honestly. This is the property of Nô-velDrama.Org.
“Did he neglect his duties?” he asked again.
“No sir.”
“Did he grumble while working?” He interrogated.
“No sir.”
“Then what’s the problem?” he blurted.
“Sir?”
“What exactly is the problem you have with him hiring a girlfriend to get the investment project rolling again?” he asked, relieving me of all my anxiety – fear of what punishment he’d mete out on me.
Turned out that my boss didn’t actually find the fault with me, but with Brielle – the blabbermouth.
“Sir I…,” she tried to defend herself when Mr. Steve cut her off politely.
“Your plane tickets are ready. You’re leaving Nedford first thing tomorrow morning,” he ordered. “Your expertise is required somewhere else so we need you out of that city by latest, tomorrow morning,” he further stated.
“But sir, with all due respect, I only thought of performing my duties by telling you what Mr. Cayden had done. I sincerely meant no harm sir, I meant well,” she asserted.
“Miss Lily?” he called out again.
“Yes sir,” she replied dispiritedly.
“I don’t pay you to keep tabs on my loyal workers.” Hearing him refer to me as ‘loyal’ lifted up my spirit – I was overjoyed and felt fulfilled to actually be acknowledged in this manner.
“It’s not like that sir, I…,” Mr. Steve intercepted yet again.
“Save your strength and focus on your duties okay? That way, no one would feel wronged,” he reprimanded nicely without losing his cool.
“I really didn’t mean no harm, sir. I just thought you won’t be happy about it so I told you everything,” she defended.
“Personally, I don’t see anything wrong with that. Mr. Cayden here ascertained the urgency of the whole issue and sprung into action. He discerned he needed to have a partner to fix things up and instead of whining over the fact that the job tried to interfere with is personal life – which wouldn’t have been completely out of the ordinary if he did – he chose to act fast and hired someone to play the role of a partner. That’s peak professionalism right there, if you ask me,” he commended and had me all smiley. The anger and irritation I felt some moments ago were suppressed rapidly.
“Sir…,” It looked like Brielle had more to say.
“Miss Lily?” he called out firmly but calmly, cutting her off.
“Yes sir.”
“If you have enough time to butt in other people’s affairs, go get ready to leave,” he instructed firmly and entertained no rooms for further arguments. “Mr. Cayden?” he called me this time.
“Yes sir,” I answered excitedly.
“Thank you for a job well done. I really am very grateful,” he expressed his thanks warmly.
“I’m more than happy to render my services if that’s all needed to avert crises, at any time, sir,” I responded.
“Do have a great day ahead.”
“And you too, sir.”
He logged off and the meeting ended.
Looking at Brielle’s disappointed expression, I burst into a sarcastic laughter. “Sike!” I exclaimed, still laughing hard.
“So you really did snitch on me, huh?” I jeered. “What were you expecting? An applaud? A raise? Or better still, my downfall?” I asked almost at once, as I managed to control the laughter for the mean time.
She just stared at me silently, I could feel the fumes of anger emanating from her soul as she glared at me. The expression she displayed was to me, a rather funny scene to look at seeing how I couldn’t hold myself back from laughing. She angrily picked up her purse and stormed out without saying anything; I bet she was too embarrassed to say anything to me.
In the spirit of excitement, the anger I felt earlier, dissolved completely. I thought to call Lily but then again, my pride was hurt really badly. ‘I was wronged, I should be apologized to’ was one of the many notions I abode by. I then put my phone aside because I concluded that wasn’t the best time to call as my pride was still wounded deeply. I discerned it was best to wait for my pride to heal before I called her.
Thinking of Lily, I was actually very worried as to the kind of relationship she shared with the strange guy I saw earlier. The way she froze on seeing him felt too surreal; it was obvious that something was definitely up but Lily denied it. Her denying the obvious fact was in fact what annoyed me, coupled with the fact that she wasn’t really comfortable to share sensitive matters with me after all the time we spent and everything we did together. I felt really scarred by her actions but I still wasn’t going to give up on her.
