Chapter 18: Naughty Scarlett

“Here, Liam. Have some more of this beef stew. It‘s really good,” Scarlett encouraged while putting a bowl in front of Liam.

The boy smiled and while his father stepped out of the restaurant to take a phone call, he took the opportunity to ask Scarlett what has been going through his mind, “My Beauty, daddy said, I can’t marry you? Is that true?”

Scarlett blinked, slowly finding the right words to say. She sought, “Well, Liam, what do you think is the answer to that?”

Liam sighed and said with a serious expression, “Well, I know I‘m too young to get married.”

A giggle left Scarlett‘s lips. She caressed the boy’s head and said, “You know this already, right? I‘m sure you are a smart boy. Besides, why did you want to marry me in the first place? How did that come into your mind?”

“Because I really like you. You are so pretty and nice. I liked you from the day we met,” he answered.

Liam fell silent for a moment before suddenly adding, “Dad loves me but daddy is busy too. My friends talk about their mommies and I want that too. I – I really want someone to be there for me… To put me to sleep… to bring me to school, and someone to play with when daddy is away.”

“I love you like I love my dad,” he supplemented. He smiled genuinely at Scarlett before hugging her by the waist.

Liam’s mind wandered back to his chat with Kaleb. Thus, he added, “Also, I want someone to make me and my daddy smile every day. I want someone to love me and this somebody must love my daddy, too.”

Thinking about how his father wanted to make a family with Scarlett, Liam sighed and raised, “I want my daddy to be happy, too.” He gazed up at Scarlett and asked, “My Beauty, will you give me a brother and a sister too?”

Scarlett was earlier caressing his back, but when she heard him ask for a brother and sister, she froze, utterly bemused. She said, “Wait. Wait. Are we still talking about you wanting to marry me?”

She chuckled lightly and added, “Because it sounded more to me like... you want me to marry your daddy?”

“And that’s how I can have a brother and sister?” Liam clarified, pulling away, his green orbs looking at her with hope.

Unsure how to explain to the boy, she said, “Well, technically, yeah –”

“And I can call you my mommy?” He asked, his voice filled with enthusiasm.

The three resumed their meals, with Scarlett regularly turning red. It did not help that Kaleb kept staring at her like she was his prey, ready for the taking.

Through his eyes, she could feel his burning desire. His silence said it all. The way he gazed at her lips when he put food into her mouth and the way she licked her rims after finishing her dessert.

She could not shake off the feeling that something more than sleepwalking will happen tonight!

Heaving deeply, she wailed in her thoughts, ‘God, help me.‘

“Why can‘t June and Cece see the stars at the same time?” Scarlett read from the book about two friends who lived worlds apart.

“Because they live in different parts of the world. The earth is always rotating and one side faces the sun and the other faces the night,” Liam said, yawning.

“That‘s right. Which is why, tonight, we are saying goodnight, but across the globe, they are saying good morning.” Scarlett said, closing the book. “Goodnight, Liam.”

She leaned down and pecked on his cheek. She rested next to him and smiled adoringly, seeing how the young boy turned to his side, hugging the huge pillow tight. “Good night, Scarlett. I won‘t call you my Beauty anymore, because you are now... dad‘s beauty.”

Pulling the blanket over his frame, Scarlett was about ready to leave, but then Liam softly asked, “Scarlett, I hope you‘ll be my mommy soon.”

After another yawn, he dozed off helplessly.

Thinking about Liam‘s words, Scarlett bit her lips. She did not know how to feel about Liam‘s request. She earnestly cared about Liam, especially after the incident at school, but there was more to being just his mother. Scarlett also needed to figure out how to deal with Kaleb.
