CHAPTER THIRTY EIGHT
“Yara?” I called her and came closer to her.
“Who are you?” she asked as she forced herself to recognize me. I stabilized myself as I walked toward her. Recalls what happened three months ago while she was in a coma. How I caught up with her and fought to survive.
“Where is she?”
“It’s still inside,” the attendant replied.
I go into the room where we moved her because that was where the hospital equipment we bought was. I bought the beside condo unit to be attached to us and the master bedroom became a mini-clinic for Yara.
When I entered the room. I heard a long sound of the device. At the same time a word I don’t want to hear.
“Flatline doc, the patient doesn’t want to respond.” I heard the nurse say.
“Time of death?” Keisha asked.
“4:14 PM, doc.”
“No,” I whispered as my knees softened. “She can’t die. She can’t leave me.” My tears flowed one after another as I looked at her lifeless body and bathed in her own blood.
“We’re sorry, Zeus, we did everything but she bled a lot. I tried my best.”
“Save her Keisha!” I came closer to her and held her arms. “Save her!” What’s the use of our equipment here if they can’t save her.
“Zeus, calm down, I already did my best. She doesn’t want to respond.”
“No!” Then I walked closer to Yara. “Baby.” I took her hand and sat down next to her. “Baby, please wake up!” I shook her. “Yara, wake up!”
“Zeus, stop —”
“Shut up!” I glared at them one by one. Who are they to tell me she’s gone? Who are they to decide she is dead? She cannot die. She can’t leave me. I held Yara in my arms. “Wake up!” I scream. “Our babies are waiting!” But I never heard anything from her. Or any sign that she is still alive.
“Yara, please don’t leave me, baby. I can’t do this alone,” I whispered. I wanted to shed tears but I just stopped. “I don’t know what to do with the twins. I would rather die with you if you weren’t the only one with me to take care of and raise them. Don’t do this to me. Don’t leave me like this. Please come back.” Later, I heard her gasp so I looked at Keisha. “She breathes,” I called.
“What?” she asked, quickly approaching me.
“I said she breathe. I heard her gasps.” When she got closer she immediately take Yara’s pulse. She even touched the back of the ear. She even put her ears into Yara’s chest and listen for a second.
“Open the oxygen, ventilator, and anesthesia machine,” she ordered and the two nurses acted quickly. “Put her down, Zeus.”
I put her back in the bed and Keisha checked her again. I just stood there looking at them. She also ordered the two nurses to clean Yara’s lower part. She injected something here to stop the bled. Since we also had blood ready because we expected that she might bleed.
She put dextrose and checked her again. Endless checkups they did. While I was just standing and watching them. When it was all over Keisha approached me.
“How is she?” I asked nervously as I looked at her.
“She’s out of danger as of now. But sadly, she’ll be in a coma because of heavy bleeding. We have to be thankful that she responded. At least we know she’s still alive.”
“Coma? You mean —”
“I am sorry, Zeus, I am a doctor, not a God.”
“Lame excuse, Keisha. So, when will she wake up?”
“I don’t know either. A week, a month, a year, a decade, or —- forever.”
“What?”
“Her brain is active but her body is affected. With the amount of blood lost, no one can produce oxygen in her body so her heart doesn’t pump properly which makes her organs affected. They gradually lost oxygen so they did -shut down which puts Yara into a coma. And because her organs shut, so does her body. I am sorry.”
“So there’s no certainty when he’ll wake up?”
“Well, the senses of comatose people are still active. Their brain is still ok. They can hear, they can feel. So talk to her like normal to exercise her heart and brain. When they hear something, they give a signal to their brain that they are still alive. But their body is paralyzed. They will be aware that something is wrong with their situation until they realize where they are and what happens to them.”
I looked at Yara who was now well because she was clean.
“We have to be thankful that she’s still with you. I have already arranged everything. Don’t worry I will stay here with you to monitor her every day.”
“Zeus.” Phoenix tapped my shoulder. Everyone is with me now and they look at Yara.
“She will survive. She will wake up too.” Blaze said while walking towards Yara.
“That’s it, that’s a fight. Look, even death she escaped.” Jace tried to pull a joke and also grabbed me by the shoulder.
“Where’s the baby by the way?” Phoenix asked.
“With the two nannies.” I heard nothing from them until Blaze spoke. All text © NôvelD(r)a'ma.Org.
“Excuse me!” he calls the two nurses. “Can we leave Zeus here first?”
“Sir, we’re just outside first. If you need anything, just call.” I nod at them who follow the three to the exit.
I work towards Yara. I sat beside her and held her hands. I kissed her and caressed her forehead and there the tears that I had been holding back gradually came out. She has gone through so much in life but she has not given up. I know she can survive.
“I know you’re strong and I know you can make it. I’ll let you rest in the meantime because I know you need it. But please, come back soon. I can’t handle the twins alone without you. I need you, baby, so please recover soon.”
I just only wanted her to be happy. But why does every time I want to make her happy she always gets hurt? Why does she always have something to go through. She suffers a lot back then, why, until now?
Am I a curse to her? Am I responsible for her suffering? She is always hurting because of me. I am always the cause of her pain. It wouldn’t have happened if I hadn’t gotten her pregnant.
Not that I regretted the twins. But if I only knew it would happen. Maybe we can find alternative ways to have babies. I have money and I can afford any options. She will not suffer and be hurt. Because every time she hurts I feel like I’ve hurt twice.
“I’ll be with you. I’ll take care of you and the twins but come back, ok? I need you to come back and I am waiting with you.”
I did everything for the twins. Good thing there are people willing to help me. While Yara is in a coma, Keisha her with the twins and gives them a check-up. My mom was here also to take care of them and so does Avel and Dane.
Margot, Maggie, and Hailey never failed to call me every day, not only me but also with the nannies and mom to check on the twins. Yara is still in a coma. Sometimes we brought the twins with her but only for a while because her room smelled of medicine. Once in my room, the twins slept next to mommy. But often in their own room.
When I was alone I secretly cried and hugged the pillow. Her smell is still in the pillow and I am so fucking miss her. Her sweet smile says ‘goodnights’, ‘good morning’, and ‘I love you.
I love you — three words that she often said but I always answer her with ‘please wait. I know that she’s waiting for me to say those words to her. Three words I couldn’t pronounce to her. I hope he wakes up so I can tell her everything I want to say. How important she is to me. For me to tell her that she is what I need more than anything.
“Yara? Don’t you remember me, baby?” I asked and came closer to her. When I got closer I sat down next to him. “Baby?” I called and my tears kept falling. “Please, remember me.”
“You cried in front of them?” she asked frowning at me. “You show them your weakness because of me?” She was crying too so I held her hand.
“You know me, you remember me?”
“Of course, I’m just groggy so I didn’t recognize you right away.”
“I love you, I love you damn much, baby.” I was already crying when I said that. I am no longer ashamed to show everyone my weakness here. To let everyone know how I really feel. I don’t care if they laugh at me. All I know is I want to tell her what I really feel.
That I love her.
“You what, Zeus?”
“I love you so much, Yara. I love you so much and I can’t afford to lose you.” And there I cried while saying those words that she’s been waiting to hear from me.
