Tiffany also felt a bit awkward. “I’m going to go greet my friends from overseas. I’ll be leaving first”
Having said that, she too picked up her skirt and left.
Soon, only the two of them and Lysanne, who had been left behind, remained there.
Lysanne had made quite fool of herself, so her face had turned pale with anger. She could no longer maintain her facade of gentleness, so she glared fiercely at Lysander, gritting her teeth as she spoke, “So you’ve shown up too? You aren’t invited to Tillany’s birthday party, are you? Are your regretting it now? It’s too late for regrets for Tiffany is about to secure her position as Mrs. Guerral”
Lysander remained impassive as she looked at the helpless and frustrated Lysanne. She did not even want to utter a single word.
Lysanne was deeply hurt and retorted resentfully, “Stop acting so high and mighty. You’re no saint either…”
“Shut up!” Daphne couldn’t take it anymore. She stomped forward in her high heels and said, “I’m so angry right now and I have nowhere to vent. If you dare to spout nonsense here again, just see if I won’t shove my size 40 shoe into your size 39 mouth!”
Lysanne was known for being passive–aggressive that she was especially fearful of bold individuals like Daphne. She didn’t dare to look at her. Instead, she continued to glare resentfully at Lysander who remained unresponsive.
Daphne stepped in front of her, blocking her view. “What are you staring at? Let me remind you that the one who embarrassed you was Josiah. If you want to blame someone, blame him. What’s the point of blaming Lysander?”
Lysanne found herself unable to outargue her that her face alternated between shades of pale and flushed. “I refuse to talk to a shrew!”
Then, she turned her head and walked away.
Daphne rolled her eyes really hard. “What on earth…”
At that moment, the lights above suddenly shifted, casting an ethereal glow that hinted the banquet was about to officially commence.
Lysander stepped forward and held Daphne’s hand gently. “It seems like the path with Ms. Spears has likely reached a dead end,” she said. “Perhaps you should consider other options? There’s no way this is the only investment bank in Harborbrook.”
Daphne’s expression visibly sank into despair, and her voice heavy with defeat. “I’ve tried everything I could. Ms. Spears is my last hope. If even she can’t help, then no one else would risk losing money to help Everhart Corporation. Did you see what happened earlier? What on earth was Josiah thinking? He walked across half the hall, ignoring so many guests, just to undermine me!”
It was clear that Josiah did it on purpose.
Daphne’s words grew more heated as she spoke, “He’s just holding a grudge because I advised you to get a divorce and accompanied you to get an abortion! What a petty man, everything seemed fine before, but it turns out he was just waiting for the right time to get back at me!”

For a moment. Lysander couldn’t come up with a good solution, so she could only advise, “First, you should calm down. Being upset won’t solve anything.”
“I knew I couldn’t resolve it, but she was my last straw. He dismissed it with just a few words, what else could I do?” Daphne spat out bitterly. “That Ms. Spears is nothing but a hypocrite. She was showing interest only when she saw some conflict between you and Josiah. That was why she was willing to listen to me. I’ve sought her out a few times before, but she’d walk away before I could finish a sentence.”
…After all, she was a professional investor, dealing with real money on a daily basis, which made her a bit more pragmatic”
“People are so pragmatic these days, so I can understand why she would act this way.” Daphne sighed, “Lysander, what am I to do? I’ve failed before the battle begins, my dreams of becoming a female tycoon are shattered…”
“I can tell you’re not in the mood for the party anymore. Why don’t we step outside and talk? That way, we can find a quiet place to think things through.”
They did not care much about the banquet. It had nothing to do with them no matter how lively it was. As far as they were concerned, it was just meaningless noise.
With that, the two quietly slipped out through the side door, and made their way to the backyard where they began to discuss their current predicament.
Daphne slipped off her high heels and set them aside, sinking into a bout of worry as she sat on the stone bench “Lysander, I’m sorry,” she began, “If there had been any better alternatives, I wouldn’t have thought of involving you in Tiffany’s birthday party, let alone subject you to ridicule alongside me.”
“I wouldn’t be bothered by such things.” Lysander simply felt pained seeing Daphne being wronged and consoled her, “Let’s think this through together. We’ll surely find a solution.”
Daphne was always full of energy, so it was rare to see her this exhausted. She looked up at the night sky. and began to speak from her heart, “Actually, I know that the troubles you’re dealing with are no less than mine. Sorting them out is like untangling a messy knot. We have both stepped on a hornet’s nest.”
Lysander knew she was truly at her wit’s end. After a moment of silence, she asked again, “How much. investment does Everhart Corporation need to pull through?
“Almost…” Daphne nearly let the exact number slip from her lips. She quickly covered her mouth with her hand, and her eyes went wide as she looked over.
With a hint of amusement, Lysander asked, “What are you doing?”
Daphne moved her hand away, and interrupted before she could say any more. She had already guessed her intentions and firmly rejected her, “No, I already owe you thirteen million. I can’t let you go ask your biological parents for money anymore!”
Lysander spoke in a soothing voice, “Do you think Thome Constructions and Energies is a bank, where you can get as much as you want? I was just asking, that’s all.”
“That’s not going to work. Don’t I know you well enough? You’re the type who will take care of everything silently. But no matter what, ‘can’t drag you down this time.” Daphne’s fighting spirit was instantly reignited. She stood up, slipped on her high heels and said, “I just thought of something… Perhaps there’s still one more trump card to play. Let’s give it a try.”

Lysander was skeptical that Daphne was just placating her. She got up as she questioned, “What trump card? Didn’t you just say that Ms. Spears was our last resort?”
While Daphne was calling for a cab, she said. “I’ll let you know once I’ve tried it. For now, let’s head back. Where are you planning to stay tonight?‘
“I’m thinking of going home for a visit,” Lysander said, realizing it had been quite some time since she last saw them.
The home that Lysander spoke of was the one belonging to Maverick and Laura.
Daphne had the driver drop Lysander off at the place before she left.
By the time Lysander arrived, it was already late. Despite the hour, the lights in the living room were still on. As soon as she opened the door and stepped inside, she came face to face with her parents. “Dad, Mom, I’m back,” she said.
At first, Laura was filled with joy, but it quickly turned into worry. She rushed to her bedroom and returned with one of her own coats. She approached Lysander, and wrapped the coat around her. “Why are you dressed so lightly? The temperature has dropped these past few days. What if you catch a cold?”
A sense of warmth filled Lysander’s heart as she explained, “I accompanied Daphne to a banquet earlier. You should know that I couldn’t exactly dress like a dumpling in such a setting.”
Laura felt sorry for her. “Why do they always choose to have parties at night? Don’t these wealthy people ever sleep?”
Maverick handed her a hot drink. “Have some of this, it’ll warm you up.”
Lysander didn’t find it cramped at all after returning to this familiar place. Instead, she felt the long–lost sense of warmth. After exchanging a few words, she thought of Michelle and asked, “Where’s Michelle?”
“She’s quite well. It is just that she always goes to bed early; otherwise, she could have seen you.” Laura was still unaware of the incident.
Lysander held the warm cup of water, lowering her gaze just in time to spot the calculator on the sofa and the hastily hidden paper filled with numbers,
One could vaguely see that t
