White Coat seemed to be in pain, whimpering and seeking solace in Lysander’s embrace as it limped. Its hind legs seemed injured.
Adrian also noticed something off about the dog. “Its fur seemed to be torn off, and its leg seems a bit lame too.
Lysander held White Cost tightly to comfort it, her voice trembling with fear. “The police said that the thief from last night was a seasoned criminal with a past record. If it weren’t for Josiah…”
Her voice trailed off, for she dared not mention Josiah’s name in Adrian’s presence.
Adrian assumed she was just frightened and didn’t dwell on that. Instead, he comforted her in a soft voice, “Don’t be afraid. It’s over,
“Yeah, I know. Thank you for sending me home. Be careful on your way back.” Lysander changed the subject without skipping a beat.
Glancing at the draughty balcony and the warped floor–to–ceiling window frame, Adrian didn’t insist on helping her to repair them. Instead, he slowly stood up and said, “Then I’ll be on my way. I still need to report back to Ms. Everhart.”
Lysander, hugging White Coat, nodded. “I won’t be seeing you out.”
Adrian, still worried, kept pausing in his tracks and looking back as he made his way to the door. He couldn’t help but suggest, “I overheard the police say that single women can deter potential criminals by placing men’s old shoes at their doorstep. I think it makes sense. I’ll bring you some later,”
He surveyed the layout of Lysander’s home, his worry deepening. “You could also hang a few men’s clothes on the balcony,” he suggested.
“Don’t worry, I’ll just ask my dad for a few clothes and pairs of shoes later,” he said.
Adrian understood the underlying message and refrained from saying anything unnecessary. Instead, he asked as a friend, “Yeah, you can use your dad’s. Do you have any other plans after this?”
“I need to take White Coat to the veterinary clinic first to check on its injuries and leave it there to recuperate. There’s just too much on my plate after this, and I’m afraid I won’t be able to give it the attention it needs. Rather than keeping it with me and not being able to care for it properly, it would be better to let the professionals help.” Lysander stroked White Coat, carefully avoiding its injuries as she said worriedly. “Poor little pup, treated so brutally when it’s only a few months old. I’m worried it’ll be scarred for life.
Adrian thoughtfully suggested, “Maybe you should leave White Coat with me. There are many animals in the veterinary clinic, and the staff can’t possibly attend to each one thoroughly. I happen to have some free time lately, and it can keep me company. Don’t worry, I’ll take it to the veterinary clinic for a full check–up first. Once it’s treated, it can stay at my place to recover. You can pick it up once you’ve settled your
matters.”
White Coat seemed to share a close bond with him. Despite being traumatized, it still timidly leaned over for him to pet when he bent down.
Compared to Lysander, White Coat was clearly closer to Adrian, who had been looking after it.

Having no other choice, Lysander could only agree. “I’ll be counting on you then. I’ll make sure to buy White Coat some dog food and have it sent over to your place”.
Adrian left Lysander’s house with White Coat along with its snacks and toys. Instead of dilly–dallying, he left swiftly this time after advising her to get some rest.
Lysander was worn out and simply responded to him with a silent nod. As soon as he left, she changed into a clean nightgown and lay down right away, sleeping until the sky darkented completely.
If it weren’t for the unmistakable feeling of intense hunger, she might have slept straight till the following morning.
The floor–to–ceiling window did nothing to keep the wind out after its glass was shattered. After the thunderstorm, the temperature dropped significantly, making the living room feel as cold as an ice cellar.
Lysander hugged herself, drawing the curtains to block out the wind. Then, she made a beeline for the kitchen and opened the fridge to appease her grumbling stomach.
After Adrian returned, he would come over almost every day with bags of groceries, filling her refrigerator
to the brim.
Her gaze swept over the array of meats, eggs, and vegetables, but she went straight for an unopened bag of pasta. Turning around, she began to fill a pot with water.
The sound of heavy objects being dragged echoed from the corridor just beyond the wall.
Immediately followed was the sound of conversation. It seemed like there were quite a few people, at least four or five.
The next moment, there was a knock at the door.
Lysander was much more cautious this time, first peeping through the door’s peephole.
It’s Josiah and a few other unfamiliar men.
“Lysander, open the door,” he said.
Lysander hesitated for a moment, a bit frightful.
Are these the people Josiah brought to “deal with” the thief? But he knew I called the police and an ambulance. What
else is there to deal with?
“Lysander?” Josiah called out her name again.
That was when the door was pulled open from the inside.
Josiah’s hand, which was about to knock on the door, hung in mid–air. Four of five young men stood behind him, each carrying large packages. As their gazes met, they all froze on the spot.
Several large items were indeed placed in the corridor.
The next moment, Josiah stepped inside and slammed the door shut behind him, leaving the others outside. Frowning in displeasure, he said, “Go back inside and get dressed properly before coming out again.”

Lysander looked down at her turtleneck sweater, speechless. “What else am I supposed to wear? If I put on more clothes, I’ll die from a heat stroke.”
Josiah gave her a quick once–over before stroking his chin thoughtfully and asking, “Have you put on some weight recently?”
“How is that possible? I’ve been so busy. Why would I have time to gain weight?”
“Your figure has improved a lot.”
Lysander was confused. I’m wearing a turtleneck sweater. How can he even discern my figure?
Josiah gestured toward her chest. “This sweater was quite loose here when you wore it before this. It wasn’t this tight.”
Lowering her gaze, Lysander finally knew what he was talking about.
Although this sweater had long sleeves and a high neck, it was designed to be form–fitting.
In the past, she always wore it as an underlayer, paired with an outer coat on top, be it a trench coat or a tracksuit which concealed her figure.
Since she was at home today, she didn’t wear an outer coat, making the shape of her chest slightly more noticeable.
Lysander frowned. “What are those people outside here for? Did you bring them here to deal with the crime scene?”
Josiah clicked his tongue twice. “Yeah, kind of.”
“That guy’s at the hospital. The surgery’s probably over by now, so I won’t be needing them for the time being.”
“What did the police say?”
Lysander said, “I wanted to help you cover this up, but the police nowadays are extremely meticulous in their investigations. It’s impossible to deceive them.”
“I never intended to hide anything either. But I haven’t received a call from them yet.”
“You’ve got the whole process down pat, huh? Did you gain experience from taking the blame for Lysanne’s cousin?”
Josiah curled his lips into a smirk. “Let’s talk about this later. Hurry inside and put on a coat. We have important matters to attend to today.”
