Chapter 24
Chapter 24
Hearing the sound of a door opening, Angeline turned her head and saw a group of people gazing at her. She was also stunned.
When Evander saw Angeline, rage almost instantly showed on his face. How dare this woman come here instead of leaving!
As the group of people at the door discussed amongst each other, someone recognized Angeline.
“Isn’t that Angeline?”
“When did Angeline become Floretta’s mother? Does this mean Mr. Golding and Angeline…”
“Mr. Goodman.” When Sylas saw Evander’s expression, he quickly chased everyone unrelated to the situation away. “Mr. Golding has matters to tend to, so all of you, please return to your posts first. I’ll inform you all when to submit reports about your work later on.”
Swiftly, he sent the department heads out of the room.
When he turned back, he saw Angeline already letting Floretta go and standing up from the couch. Angeline explained, “Please don’t misunderstand, Mr. Golding. I’m only here because I came across Floretta.” Nôvel/Dr(a)ma.Org - Content owner.
Evander had no interest in listening to her explanation. Staring coldly at her, he cut her off, “I’ve underestimated you. You certainly have a lot of tricks up your sleeve.”
Her expression changed. “You still think I’m…”
Seeing that she still refused to leave, Evander ordered, “Sylas, call the security guards.” The look in his eyes grew colder.
“Daddy!” Floretta panicked. “Why are you calling the security guards? I invited Angel to celebrate my birthday with me! She even made my cake!”
When Evander heard the word “birthday,” his eyebrows imperceptibly furrowed as though he had just recalled something.
Then he noticed a strawberry cake that had already been cut open on the coffee table. There were also a couple of candles that were already lit and extinguished by the cake.
“Daddy, you said you were going to celebrate my birthday with me, but you didn’t show up the whole day! That’s why I came to find you, but the cake was ruined. Angel was kind enough to bake me a new cake and celebrate my birthday with me. How can you chase her away? You’re too mean, Daddy. I don’t want to see you anymore.” The girl started crying again.
Usually, that tactic wouldn’t have worked because he knew what kind of personality her daughter had. Inside her head were a million ways to avoid getting faulted. Crying was a common tactic for the shrewd little girl to get out of trouble.
However, that day was her birthday, and he did promise to stay with her for the whole day.
Soon, Evander noticed Floretta’s red, swelling knee. A look of heartache flashed past his eyes. “It’s my fault, Floretta. I should’ve celebrated your birthday with you. How did your knee get hurt?”
As he approached his daughter to comfort her, he noticed her eyes were swollen, meaning she wasn’t faking it. That made him feel even more guilty and sorry.
“Don’t cry, Floretta.” Crouching down, he pulled out a tissue paper and wiped her face. “Didn’t you want to go to the amusement park? I’ll take you there next week.”
“Liar! You always lie to me.”
“I’m not lying this time. I promise I’ll take you there.”
“Promise.” Floretta raised her little finger.
Evander raised his hand out of habit before realizing there was still someone next to him. The look in his eyes darkened as he uttered in a cold tone, “Thank you for celebrating Floretta’s birthday with her. You can leave now, Ms. Sorelle.”
It wasn’t the first or second time Angeline was asked to leave. She had planned to depart after celebrating Floretta’s birthday. After that, she would devise another way to deal with the spokesperson issue. However, seeing how defensive he was, she changed her mind on the spot. “Since you seem to believe I have an ulterior motive, then let me ask you this. Why did you terminate my contract with Starlight Jewelry? If you can give me a convincing reason, I’ll leave right away.”
Evander’s focus was wholly focused on examining Floretta’s wound as he carried her. He didn’t even look at Angeline.
Sylas, who had been standing at the entrance, understood what he needed to do and informed, “Ms. Angeline, we’ve chosen Denise, an actress in the same company as you, to take the role of Starlight Jewelry’s spokesperson.”
“What? You’ve chosen Denise?” Upon hearing that name, the edge of Angeline’s eyes twitched.
