POOR ZANE, POOR ME

Rita’s POV

I was restless throughout the rest of the day, I waited for closing hours impatiently, I just wanted to get home and have a heart to heart conversation with Zane.

We returned from the lunch break, attended to clients like everything was fine. I wish I could fast forward time but then, before I knew it, it was finally time to go home.

I didn’t exchange words with Evelyn and Adam, instead I quickly packed up my things into my bag and prepared to leave in a jiffy.

I didn’t want Finn to come stop me again or says he wanna drive me home and end up talking about his feelings again. I don’t wanna hear any of that, I just wanna talk to my Zane about us. Poor Zane, poor me; I screamed in my head.

“Uhm Rita, can we go home together like we used to?” Evelyn obstructed my way.

“Sorry, I wanna walk alone” I turned her down without thinking twice.

“Then can.. can I talk to you for a minute?” She asked.

“About what happened at lunch? If it is, forget it” I told her.

” I am very sorry Rita. I shouldn’t have said that. I was only blabbing …” She began to plead but I interrupted her.

“I need to go now” I said when I sighted Finn coming out of his office.

I walked faster, so he wouldn’t catch up with me.

“Evelyn, I see you and your friend just had a big fight; what is it?” Finn inquired.

“It’s not a big fight” She shrugged “And it’s private, it doesn’t have anything to do with you” Evelyn replied.

“I guess I will just go after her” He was about to go

“Finn. Just give up already because Rita will not date you” Evelyn told him.

“Oops! Rita already told you about us. I can’t help it, I’m in love with Rita”

“We are best friends so she tells me almost everything. Geez! I just need to fix things with her now”

“Err…so uhm, what makes you think Riita won’t date me? I am not her kind of guy?” Finn questioned further.

“She’s taken. She has a boyfriend whom she cherishes so dearly. I have never seen her so drunk in love like the way she loves her boyfriend. So Finn, just give up, Rita doesn’t like you; she can’t and won’t date you” Evelyn concluded.

“Ohh geez!” Evelyn knocked her head. ” I have been blabbing all day! What is wrong with me?” she murmured feeling remorseful all of a sudden.

“Please Mr Finn, do not hurt Rita when she eventually turns you down herself” Evelyn implored earnestly.

“Who’s the guy? Who is her boyfriend?” Finn inquired.

“Oh no! That’s enough information I can give to you. I am supposed to run after my best friend and apologize intensively till she forgives me but look at dumb me, here I am disclosing her private life to you” She said.

Adam approached them, so she had to bid Finn bye and walk home with her boyfriend; holding hands with him.

“So did you clean up your mess? Did you apologize to Rita?” Adam asked her.

“I tried but it proved abortive” Evelyn answered in low spirit.

“Of course, she’s so mad. You know Rita just never says she’s mad, she pretends she’s not” Her boyfriend told her.

“Oh no. Now, I feel really really bad” She whimpered.

“You deserve to feel bad. You fvcking mocked her!” He inculpated his girlfriend and she squinted her eyes, looking downcast and dejected.

“I was outta of my mind, I was only spewing nonsense. I didn’t notice she’ll get very upset”

“Oh really? but you said you prefer communicating with someone physically, so you could be mindful of their facial expressions yet you failed to notice that she was pissed off that you kept on insisting she should dish her boyfriend and date a billionaire” Adam continued.

“Oh that too. I swear, I didn’t mean any of that. I was only relating her situation to those billionaire CEO romance stories. Now she sees me as a bad friend right? Uugh! I have a lot of things to apologize for” She was sincerely sober.

“And I am sure that the main reason she was so mad at you is because you literally made her get into the relationship when she was not ready. You caused her match-makewith Zane” Adam continued to blame his girlfriend. She got provoked, she stop walking and shot him a long stare.

“Why are you blaming me?” She folded her arms.

“Should I be supporting what you have done wrong? You think you deserve an accolade?”

“No, I am not saying that. I admit, I was wrong and I am lamenting and regretting from the depth of my heart. But why are you suddenly talking about her and making me feel even more sad and despondent. Also, that reminds me, earlier at lunch; you supported her and snapped at me like she’s more important” She voiced out.

“Rita is my best friend!” Adam said.

“And I am your girlfriend!”

“We three were best of friends before you became my girlfriend ” He reminded her.

“That doesn’t justify your action neither does it answers my question. Do you like Rita?” Evelyn asked suspiciously.

“Ugh… what no? I love you so much Evelyn. I am only correcting you. I.. I.. want you to make up things with her as soon as possible; so we three can be cool again” He tried to defend himself but Evelyn rolled her eyes and stood at an akimbo angle indignantly.

“Okay, okay … I was overreacting” He surrendered almost trembling.

“Hmmmn” She gazed at him skeptically then walked ahead of him.
