Chapter 78
Chapter 78
She saw someone she didn’t want to—Emma. Emma was approaching her. After what happened last time, the falling out between them became obvious enough. She didn’t want to talk to Emma.
However, Emma was very interested in talking to Alice. “You’re here, Alice.” There was a smile on Emma’s face and she sounded surprised, like she was actually waiting for Alice.
Alice didn’t even look at her. She didn’t bother putting up an act, even.
“When are you coming back? Grandma misses you.” Emma was smiling, but there was venom behind that smile. The case of Alice hitting Sophia had been made known to everyone. Emma thought Alice was a fool, so Emma wanted to drag her name through the mud using the same incident.
“Didn’t Uncle Elijah tell you? I texted him everything he should know.” Alice finally looked at Emma, but her gaze was calm. However, there was also something terrifying under those still waters.
Emma’s face fell, venom creeping into her gaze. She wanted to tear Alice apart, but for some reason, she was scared. The fact that she lost to Alice twice scared her. But I’m not in a hurry. As long as she stays here, I can take her down.
Alice had dirt on Emma. If Emma wanted to gain back some power in the dynamic, she must gain some dirt on Alice as well. It’s best if I can destroy her reputation. She had been thinking of ways to do that, but she had no chance to take action previously. Alice wouldn’t take her calls, and she didn’t respond to the texts asking her out.
Ever since the wedding, Emma knew something was off about Alice. She thought Alice might have found out something. The fool’s finally got herself some brains. Fine, then. She stopped pretending and left.
A moment later, a waiter went by Alice and tripped a little. One of the glasses fell toward Alice, but the waiter caught the glass. Still, some of the wine spilled on Alice. “I’m very sorry,” he kept apologizing, and he crouched down to wipe the patch of wine off Alice.
A woman beside Alice quickly opened Alice’s bag and slid something in.
The waiter kept wiping Alice’s dress and apologizing, but aside from that, he said nothing.
Alice looked at him and her face fell. “It’s alright. You can leave now.” This content provided by N(o)velDrama].[Org.
“Thank you, thank you.” The waiter got up and left.
Once he was gone, Alice looked at her bag, and a smile curled her lips. Not bad, but this isn’t enough to escape me. What a fool. Let’s see what you’re up to then, Emma. Alice remained seated, awaiting the show to unfurl.
A few minutes later, two women and a few bodyguards charged toward Alice. “That’s her! She’s the thief who stole my necklace! Seize her!”
Alice was in a quiet corner and the room was dimly lit so no one noticed her at first, but now everyone turned their attention to her. Someone turned on the lights above her as well, illuminating her face.
Alice smiled. Someone’s taking my kindness as a weakness. She was already miffed about not finding Jonathan, and she wanted to vent to someone. Good. The prey fell into the trap. Unbeknownst to her, Ethan was in the room as well, and he came with a motive in mind.
Alice didn’t move or speak, but she slowly looked at the women and the bodyguards. Her gaze was deathly calm, but the bodyguards froze. They felt a chill run down their spines just from being looked at. All of them stopped and dared not to take one step further.
Everyone in the room froze. No one could believe that a woman’s gaze was enough to shut everyone up. A man in the corner was sitting languidly on the couch and holding his glass of wine while staring at Alice, but the next second, his eyes shone and he sat up. It’s her!
“We need you to work with us, Miss,” one of the guards said, sounding a lot more polite.
Alice looked down, and to everyone’s surprise, she picked up a cup of tea and fiddled with it. It was like the tension in the air didn’t affect her—as if she was the only one in the room and she wasn’t the target of everyone’s suspicion.
The guards waited and so did the guests, but no one spoke.
A moment later, she said, “Reason?” It was a simple answer, but none could resist submitting to it. It felt like drawing breath alone was dangerous in her presence.
The guard was tongue-tied. They knew they had good reason to ask for her cooperation, but he couldn’t say a word. There were people in the world who could make someone else submit only through their aura, and he thought this woman was one of those people. I don’t really think someone like her would steal.
A deafening silence fell upon the room. Alice had put on some makeup in her car and covered her scar. Her scar had been her signature for years. Some people recognized the scar better than they could recognize her.
She didn’t want to cause trouble at first, but that plan was dashed the moment Emma came in. Emma would try to sabotage her, and then she would be at the center of everyone’s attention. She would be exposed, and if she looked different from her usual self, it would raise suspicion. Ethan even tried to wipe her scar off the night before, so she changed back to her usual self. The makeup only covered her scar, not removed it. Changing back was no hassle.
