Don’t Mess With the Rock Chicks

Chapter 10

Chapter 10

“Nothing much. My mom just called.” Jolene Marsh smiled calmly, “It’s a family matter, so it’s nothing to bother you about.”

Bowen had a good idea of what was going on at Jolene’s home. However, every time he tried to ask her for more details, she would beat around the bush and give vague responses.

Her problems were hers to deal with. She refused to ask him for assistance with something that she could handle on her

own.

It was this trait that told Bowen early on that he’d found a good companion.

She was probably the only one in the world.

Even pushing her away was easier than expected.

After all, she was more than willing to get out of the way on her own.

She was the only lover who knew her place and the

boundaries she shouldn’t cross. She would never go beyond.

That was why Bowen simply gave her the contract and left. “Bring it to me by the end of the day.”

“Of course.” She smiled, “I’ll get it done right away.”

As soon as the door closed, her face fell, shedding the false smile that she donned so easily.

Letting out a long sigh, she yanked open the curtains before settling back into her seat. She had work to do.

Earth Group’s work day concluded at 5:30 PM, but she never left on time.

The contract that Bowen had given her was more

complicated than she thought. She spent the rest of the day reorganizing it, just barely managing to finish around half past six. Her smile disappears immediately as the door closes.

Since Lofan Company was located on the west side of the city, it would take her at least thirty to forty minutes to drive there. This would also be during rush hour.

She hurriedly gathered everything up and headed toward Bowen’s office.

She hadn’t been the only victim of a long workday. Bowen hadn’t left either. The only source of light in his office was his desk lamp.

As she strode inside, she flicked on the overhead lights, cheerfully saying, “It can hurt your eyes if you’re on your computer in the dark.”

Bowen glanced up at her only to do a double take at her stunning makeup.

“It looks like I didn’t give you enough work if you had time to do your makeup.”

“I just did it with one hand while I was in the bathroom. I thought I’d go for something that’s nice and sexy. It wasn’t too hard.” She was rarely this lively and was clearly in a good mood.

“If it’s okay, Mr. Evert, I’ll be heading out now.”

“I haven’t finished reading the contract yet.” He opened up the sleek file in his hands.

All she could do was stand beside his desk as she waited for him to make his decision.

The minutes ticked by, one by one. Jolene quietly stole glances at her phone’s clock.

It was now 6:35 PM.

Even flying wouldn’t get her there in time.

As she continued to check the time, Bowen finally caught her looking one too many times.

Without lifting his head, he asked flatly, “Am I keeping you?”

“No,” she laughed brightly. “My time is all yours, Mr. Evert.”

He continued to scrutinize the documents for another ten minutes, wanting to find something, anything, to nitpick.

However, Jolene Marsh was someone who prided herself in her seamless work. It wasn’t easy to find something done incorrectly by her.

When he finished his reading, he finally set down the contract.

Jolene quietly released a sigh of relief. Just as she was about to declare herself done with work for the day, Bowen stood up.

“Go check on the project site at the South Bridge. While you‘ re there, there’s a nice Italian place you should stop by. Try a plate of their spaghetti.”

Jolene struggled to maintain her smile. “I already went there yesterday. The engineering team had already cleared out a large hole. I almost fell in. The construction site advised us to avoid visiting for the next few days, so there’s nothing to

see.”

Bowen raised an eyebrow at her words. He shot her a glance out of the corner of his eyes as he slipped on his coat.

“Do you want to go on the blind date that badly?”

Without being asked, she approached him and fixed his tie. Her eyes seemed to smile up at him. “Well, Mrs. Evert introduced me, so I have high hopes. My mom would always nag me about how I’m getting too old and how I needed to find someone to rely on.”

She mimicked his raised brows and added, “Also, Mr. Evert, didn’t you promise to take Miss Gellar to Kea Mountain in the evening to watch the moon? Or did you forget?”

The two of them were extremely close to each other.

They could almost feel each other’s heartbeats thumping together in harmony.

Neither one of them could figure out what the other was thinking, though.

Behind their backs, Joyce and everyone else in the office said that their minds and hearts were connected.

It was almost exhausting to see them get along so well while unable to be together.

Bowen studied her bare ears and neck and smiled without thinking.

“Don’t wear a single piece of jewelry. Then everyone who sees you will think I’m a strict boss.”
